Section II of 1 Timothy

Part 14

(Mother, Sister, Widow, Family, Nation)

1 Timothy

Chapter 5:2-16

A Creed

of

1Timothy 4:9-10

This is a faithful saying and worthy of all acceptation:

For this cause:

We both labour
and
Suffer reproach,

Because we trust in the living God,

Who is the Saviour of all men,
Specially of those that believe.

1Ti 5:2 The elder women as mothers; the younger as sisters, with all purity.
1Ti 5:3 Honour widows that are widows indeed.
1Ti 5:4 But if any widow have children or nephews, let them learn first to shew piety at home, and to requite their parents: for that is good and acceptable before God.
1Ti 5:5 Now she that is a widow indeed, and desolate, trusteth in God, and continueth in supplications and prayers night and day.
1Ti 5:6 But she that liveth in pleasure is dead while she liveth.
1Ti 5:7 And these things give in charge, that they may be blameless.
1Ti 5:8 But if any provide not for his own, and specially for those of his own house, he hath denied the faith, and is worse than an infidel.
1Ti 5:9 Let not a widow be taken into the number under threescore years old, having been the wife of one man,
1Ti 5:10 Well reported of for good works; if she have brought up children, if she have lodged strangers, if she have washed the saints’ feet, if she have relieved the afflicted, if she have diligently followed every good work.
1Ti 5:11 But the younger widows refuse: for when they have begun to wax wanton against Christ, they will marry;
1Ti 5:12 Having damnation, because they have cast off their first faith.
1Ti 5:13 And withal they learn to be idle, wandering about from house to house; and not only idle, but tattlers also and busybodies, speaking things which they ought not.
1Ti 5:14 I will therefore that the younger women marry, bear children, guide the house, give none occasion to the adversary to speak reproachfully.
1Ti 5:15 For some are already turned aside after Satan.
1Ti 5:16 If any man or woman that believeth have widows, let them relieve them, and let not the church be charged; that it may relieve them that are widows indeed.

1Ti_5:16
5. If any man or woman that believeth have widows,
a. let them relieve them,
b. and let not the church be charged;
c. that it may relieve them that are widows indeed (v.2) .

As it is this day among the people of God, and as it was in the days of the giving of the Law of Moses with in this family church of flesh and bone there are Widows.
Women who have lost their husbands as mentioned in 1Ti 5:2

On our new outline we have I.F.1.b.iii elder women and iv. younger women of which can both be v. widows to be honored.

1Ti 5:2
iii. elder women
1. as mothers

iv. the younger women
1. as sisters,
2. with all purity.

1Ti_5:3
v. Honour widows that are widows indeed.(elder or younger)
So here our focus turns to looking at another member of the neighborhood, the brotherhood, our sisters who are widows.

Exo_22:22 Ye shall not afflict any widow, or fatherless child.

Widow:
Deu 10:18 He doth execute the judgment of the fatherless and widow, and loveth the stranger, in giving him food and raiment.

Part of the tithe is distributed to the group the widow is part of according to:
Deu 14:29 And the Levite, (because he hath no part nor inheritance with thee,) and the stranger, and the fatherless, and the widow, which are within thy gates, shall come, and shall eat and be satisfied; that the LORD thy God may bless thee in all the work of thine hand which thou doest.

All of these persons are those that have “no inheritance” as we see the Levite included here on the 3rd year tithe.

Deu_16:11 & Deu_16:14
Also we have festal laws that say “thou shalt rejoice before the LORD thy God, thou, and thy son, and thy daughter, and thy manservant, and thy maidservant, and the Levite that is within thy gates, and the stranger, and the fatherless, and the widow”

This is part of this Judgment YHWH has proclaimed that:

Deu_24:17 Thou shalt not pervert the judgment of the stranger, nor of the fatherless; nor take a widow’s raiment to pledge:

and part of what we pledged our selves to this last reading of the Law at the feast of tabernacles just a few weeks ago:
Deu_27:19 Cursed be he that perverteth the judgment of the stranger, fatherless, and widow. And all the people shall say, Amen.

This is not just a recital, but a personal and public affirmation or Amen, a testimony of your faith in this Law of God.
To pervert the judgment of the widow is simply to slight them in equity o any matter that the Law demands or to turn aside the civil judgment that would be in favor of the widow, featherless or stangers case at law.
These are serious offences before God, and as we study out these laws that show the right of the widow we will understand these matters all the more.

1Ti_5:3
v. Honor Widows (elder or younger)
1. Any widow having children or nephews (family)
a. children (G5043 τεκνα is noun neuter: son or daughter= child)
b. nephews / progeny (G1549 εκγονα is adjective of children (G5043 τεκνα) also neuter: any descendant)
a.let them learn first to shew piety at home,
b. and to requite their parents: for that is good and acceptable before God.

b. nephewsG1549 ἔκγονον/ekgonon: out of genes
Brenton: offspring
ABP: progeny
Our KJV fruit of thy body in Deu_28:11 & Deu_28:18 for instance, showing the literal nature.
(G1549 εκγονα is adjective of children (G5043 τεκνα) also neuter: any descendant)

1Ti 5:5
2. She that is a widow indeed (truly the definition of a widow: Chera lit. Greek : G5503 χήρα means “void” or ‘in Chaos’, lit. Hebrew: H490 almanah which means ‘forsaken’ in the sense of having been made ‘silent’ or alam)
a. and desolate (monos lit. ‘mono’ or alone, single)
b. and trusteth in God,
c. and continueth in supplications
d. and prayers night and day.

1Ti_5:6
3. But the Widow that liveth in pleasure (that is a widow indeed and is not solely – monos and dependant on God)
a. is dead while she liveth.

(3. a Widow that liveth in pleasure : pleasure is spatalosa / σπαταλωσαG4684 σπαταλάω / spatalaō

ABP:
Eze 16:49 Besides this, the violation of Sodom your sister — pride; in fullnessG4140 of bread and in prosperity they lived extravagantly(G4684), she and her daughters; this existed in her and her daughters, and [3 the hand 4of the poor 5and 6needy 1they did not 2assist].

KJV

Eze_16:49 Behold, this was the iniquity of thy sister Sodom, pride, fulness of bread, and abundance of idleness was in her and in her daughters, neither did she strengthen the hand of the poor and needy.

Jas_ 5:5 Ye have lived in pleasure on the earth, and been wanton (G4684 ABP: lived in luxury)
; ye have nourished your hearts, as in a day of slaughter.

1Ti 5:7 – 1Ti_5:8
vi. And these things give in charge (to all), that they may be blameless (unassailable or not over taken: anepileptos).
1. But if any provide not
a. for his own, and specially for those of his own house,
• he hath denied the faith,
• and (he) is worse than an infidel.

The point here being made is that of what we covered in the Law regarding widows, namely that they are to be cared for.

How?

Lets turn to one of the best case examples in scripture on this subject, that is the story of the widows Ruth and Naomi.

Note the high points of the second chapter for this discussion:
Rth 2:1 And Naomi had a kinsman of her husband’s, a mighty man of wealth, of the family of Elimelech; and his name was Boaz.
Rth 2:2 And Ruth the Moabitess said unto Naomi, Let me now go to the field, and glean ears of corn after him in whose sight I shall find grace. And she said unto her, Go, my daughter.
Rth 2:3 And she went, and came, and gleaned in the field after the reapers: and her hap was to light on a part of the field belonging unto Boaz, who was of the kindred of Elimelech.

Here is a picture of YHWH God’s ideal provision for the widow, a family taking care of each others needs. A healthy and able young widow that will go to the family of her dead husband and wait for the blessing of the Lord according to the rights of the Law.

Deu_24:19 When thou cuttest down thine harvest in thy field, and hast forgot a sheaf in the field, thou shalt not go again to fetch it: it shall be for the stranger, for the fatherless, and for the widow: that the LORD thy God may bless thee in all the work of thine hands.
Deu 24:20 When thou beatest thine olive tree, thou shalt not go over the boughs again: it shall be for the stranger, for the fatherless, and for the widow.
Deu 24:21 When thou gatherest the grapes of thy vineyard, thou shalt not glean it afterward: it shall be for the stranger, for the fatherless, and for the widow.
Deu 24:22 And thou shalt remember that thou wast a bondman in the land of Egypt: therefore I command thee to do this thing.

If Boaz did not relieve Ruth and Naomi Boaz would be “worse than an infidel’, worse than the faithless heathen, but rather we find Boaz commanding his reapers to provide more than the Law required in ‘letting hand full’s of grain fall for Ruth to find’ in Rth_2:16 and we see even more of the kindness to Naomi from Boaz in Rth_3:15-18 when he gives her freely, the six measures of barley, he laid on her: and she went back her mother in law, Naomi and says, he said ” Go not empty unto thy mother in law.”

This Consistent morality of the Eternal God  is the original intention of this statement of Paul, as before all else, and every meaning you can imply into Paul’s words concerning the care of widows that are widows indeed, that is with no progeny, we should understand 1 Timothy 5 concerning widows as we see the called out elect and faithful Boaz taking care of his own as the church man of his kindred.

The Record of Scriptural genealogy shows that:
1Ch_2:11 Nahshon begat Salma, and Salma begat Boaz,
1Ch_2:51 and Salma was the father of Bethlehem the city of David.

Thus is according to biblical law that Nahshon  was the common ancestral father of all those who inherited Bethlehem and its suburbs, thus Boaz and Elimelech were descendants of a common father most likely Nahshon the Head of the princes, the bishop, overseer or Episcope of the whole of Judah’s tribe as recorded in Num_1:7 and elsewhere.
Thus, what we see in Ruth and Naomi are widows that is a widows indeed, having no progeny, no children or grandchild; but the church of Judah has a kinsman, a true brother in faith and genetics Boaz that steps up to the task of caring for “his widows” according to, and beyond the Law of God’s commands.

And so Boaz is not Naomi’s child, thus he is not being admonished by he same spirit as we find in:

1Ti 5:4 But if any widow have children or nephews, let them learn first to shew piety at home, and to requite their parents: for that is good and acceptable before God.

Because he is not a Child or a Nephew (meaning: grandchild) of Naomi,
But the because Naomi and Ruth are is a 1Ti 5:3 Honorable widow that are widows indeed 1Ti 5:5 widow indeed that are desolate, trusting in God, and continuing in supplications and prayers night and day. And Boaz obviously knows his duty as a man of Israel he works according to 1Ti 5:16 as a man that hath believing widows, and so he relieves them, and lest not the more general church beyond him be charged; that it may relieve them who are more so removed from his bounds of brotherhood that are widows indeed.

And so here is the point: Paul is teaching the” truth and the verity” of the Law of God regarding widows no differently than the Law of Moses taught Boaz, and now is that which the Gentile people of Ephesus did not know, being aliens from Israel’s common wealth (as per Eph_2:12-19).

The law is so perfectly being encourages by Paul to Timothy that we see:

( v. Honor Widows
#4. 1Ti 5:14
I will therefore that the younger women
a. marry, )

…exactly play out in the life of Ruth and Boaz, as Boaz sees his right to marriage this young woman whom he protect, as she indeed is desiring marriage, and blessedly desiring marriage to the man the Lord with his Law wills her to marry.

And so in Ruth we see her as a younger woman after marring to the God ordained man:
b. bear children,
c. guide the house,
d. give none occasion to the adversary to speak reproachfully.

And she does this so well she is the great grandmother of King David .

Here is the case of the Law which applies to this family law we are studying, and yes this may be a shock, but as our ancient forefathers obeyed the voice of the Law of God I also encourage, support and confirm the Law Ruth exercises as the proper and Good culture for the people of God, the Law of the levirate:

Deu_25:5 If brethren dwell together, and one of them die, and have no child, the wife of the dead shall not marry without unto a stranger: her husband’s brother shall go in unto her, and take her to him to wife, and perform the duty of an husband’s brother unto her.
Deu 25:6 And it shall be, that the firstborn which she beareth shall succeed in the name of his brother which is dead, that his name be not put out of Israel.

“the wife of the dead shall not marry without unto a stranger: her husband’s brother shall go in unto her, and take her to him to wife, and perform the duty of an husband’s brother unto her. ”
This is a commandment, and to the surprise of many, this was a cultural commandment many of our father and mothers observed freely in early America and more so in Europe, especial and more recently among the Presbyterians of Scotland and Ireland.

The Law does not suggest this as a good Idea, it speaks from the standpoint that this is the way is should be, for to marry another before the kinsman is given the right and privilege to redeem his brother’s name and relieve his widow is a marriage to a stranger.

and so we see Naomi being provided for by the general church of Bethlehem in Ruth’s gleanings before she is accepted in to the house of Boaz, but after she is an inheritance to be cares for in the home under the provisions Boaz headship.

Thus we find:
1Ti 5:9
2. Let not a widow be taken into the number / ESV : Let a widow be enrolled if she is not
a. under threescore years old,
b. having been the wife of one man,
1Ti 5:10
c. Well reported of for good works;
d. if she have brought up children,
e. if she have lodged strangers,
f. if she have washed the saints’ feet,
g. if she have relieved the afflicted,
h. if she have diligently followed every good work.

1Ti_5:11
3. But the younger widows refuse:
a. for when they have begun to wax wanton against Christ, they will marry; / for when their passions draw them away from Christ, they desire to marry
1Ti 5:12
b. Having damnation, because they have cast off their first faith.
1Ti 5:13
c. And withal they learn to be idle,
d. wandering about from house to house;
e. and not only idle, but tattlers also and busybodies, speaking things which they ought not.

4. 1Ti 5:14
I will therefore that the younger women
a. marry,
b. bear children,
c. guide the house,
d. give none occasion to the adversary to speak reproachfully.

• 1Ti 5:15 For some are already turned aside after Satan.

1Ti 5:16
5. If any man or woman that believeth have widows,
a. let them relieve them,
b. and let not the church be charged;
c. that it may relieve them that are widows indeed (v.2) .

About JS Lowther

Foremost I know that I am a chief sinner saved by Grace. I am a servant of YHWH Almighty the one true God Who is Father, Son and Spirit. I believe in God's only begotten and perfect Son Jesu(s) Christ whose redemption power of my soul I have Faith in and testify of. Having been redeemed by the blood of Christ, I wish to no longer spend my time in the lusts of the flesh and of this world, but to promote the Gospel of the Kingdom by means of the knowledge of the New Covenant, a reNewal of the Covenant God made with his people Israel in the blood of Christ (Jer 31:31 and Heb 8:8) whereby He writes His Law upon the Heart and Mind beside the forgiveness of sin and transgressions. I believe Christ Jesus is the incarnate Son of God as the WORD made flesh, and the son of man born of the virgin Mary conceived of the Holy Spirit: I believe Christ Jesus Lived a perfect life for us as a living sacrifice as well as a pattern of the Sanctified newness of life a believer has in Him, I believe Christ Jesus died a cursed death on the Cross for His people of Covenant who are sinners, and I believe in Christ Jesus who Resurrected with power from Death from the grave to Justify the offenders. This is the same Jesus who is indeed the Son of David and king of Israel, who is both LORD and Christ over all the kings and dominions of the earth! In the fullness of time YHWH will regather his people under the Head of the Church, Jesu(s) Christ to affect his will according to the Lord's prayer, Psalm 2, 8 and 110 as well as Genesis 1:26. The focus of my administration of the Gospel is like unto my Lord's who said "I have come not but for the lost sheep of the house of Israel.."(Mathew 15:24), and so I have come to my European kinsman according to the flesh. It is my mission to show the Israel of God the Salvation which is taught by Scripture Alone and offered in all ages by Grace Alone through Faith Alone in the work of Christ Alone to the Glory of GOD Alone. As a modern day Puritan separatist it is my goal to purify the church of Christ with Faith heretofore stated. I am studying to show my self approved, if you have any questions just ask!
