In connection to the series that I had offered “why do we keep the feasts?”, this next series is offered, to help further support and encourage the Israel of God in her return to YHWH’s ordained worship according to the Scriptures.
I’d like to add that last year around this time I had offered as series on

THE LORD’S SUPPER
Christian Pascha
Sacrament of the Faith of Jesus Christ

As well as, just a few months back, I had more so established a systematic reason for keeping the feast as Christians under the New Covenant in the series:

“Why Do we Keep the Feasts?”.

How Do We Keep the Feasts?
Part. 14

By Understanding The Day of The Atonements

(By Christ’s Priesthood)

2Pe_1:2-8 Grace and peace be multiplied unto you through the knowledge of God, and of Jesu(s) our Lord, According as his divine power hath given unto us all things that pertain unto life and godliness, through the knowledge of him that hath called us to glory and virtue: Whereby are given unto us exceeding great and precious promises: that by these ye might be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust.

And beside this, giving all diligence, add to your faith virtue; and to virtue knowledge; And to knowledge temperance; and to temperance patience; and to patience godliness; And to godliness brotherly kindness; and to brotherly kindness charity. For if these things be in you, and abound, for they make neither barren nor unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesu(s) Christ.

From our template for this series:

Lev_23:26 And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying,
Lev 23:27 Also on the tenth day of this seventh month there shall be a day of atonement: it shall be an holy convocation unto you; and ye shall afflict your souls, and offer an offering made by fire unto the LORD.
Lev 23:28 And ye shall do no work in that same day: for it is a day of atonement, to make an atonement for you before the LORD your God.
Lev 23:29 For whatsoever soul it be that shall not be afflicted in that same day, he shall be cut off from among his people.
Lev 23:30 And whatsoever soul it be that doeth any work in that same day, the same soul will I destroy from among his people.
Lev 23:31 Ye shall do no manner of work: it shall be a statute for ever throughout your generations in all your dwellings.
Lev 23:32 It shall be unto you a Sabbath of rest, and ye shall afflict your souls: in the ninth day of the month at even, from even unto even, shall ye celebrate your Sabbath.

Timing

First let’s notice the timing of this day. Again like other holidays of the calendar of God this Day of Atonement (as it is called) is not called by the name of a ‘feast’ or cHaG in Hebrew, it is rather a day of atonement. Like the weekly Sabbath this day is a holy convocation according to verse 27, but it is a day to afflict the soul and notice in verses 28-30 that there is a special notation made to fortify this day as a Sabbath beyond what we find in other festival law, only in this holiday do we find the phrase “And ye shall do no work in that same day…” in verses 28 and 30, one time connected to the Sabbath of no work and the second time in verse 29 connected to the affliction of the soul on this day and then the no work aspect mentioned again in verse 30.

This is important to notice, because it is a distinction between this day and all the rest in the scripture. And this is for the emphasis of fortifying this 10th day which is outside of the lunar Sabbath cycle as a Sabbath of Sabbaths regardless of it not happening on the week-end timing.
This 10th day of the 7th month is a matter of fact the 7th 10th day that has passed beginning with the 10th day of the 1st month the very day the Passover lamb is told to be selected by the congregation. (So this day is the Sabbath of 10th day that has passed in the year since this time. He timing is absolute in verse 32 “in the ninth day of the month at even, from even unto even, shall ye celebrate your Sabbath. “, the Heb. Lit says “Sabbath your Sabbath” rather than celebrate.
So, if we need a why is this a Sabbath answer, the best one I can give is that
1. YHWH said so
and
2. Because it is the 7th 10th day of the year.

Beyond the Timing

In every way it should be clear at the onset, that Christ Jesus is the great High priest yesterday in the time we will be reading of, Today- from the time the Apostle of Hebrews wrote these words to today, and forever, lasting as long as eternity stands.
An so while we focus upon this aspect of the holidays of YHWH which his Word spoke to be kept, let it be known that the Eternally begotten Son is that High priest making intersession for his people of election. While I do not have the time in this message and because this series is supposed to be focusing upon the “How” aspect of keeping the feasts to look at the Christology of Jesus Priesthood.
In this message, it must be recognized as an evident reality that that mediation and intersession is made by Christ alone for us to the Father by the Eternal Spirit, and that this day of Atonements for the Christian is a memorial to this evident reality as it is described in the book of Hebrews. Feasts or Holidays are used as the perfection of God’s Law is always used, to take time to walk our selves over to the mirror and examine our self to see how much of the image of Christ we are conformed to verses how much of the image of this world we are conformed to, As well as a time to understand why these patterns found in the feasts mirror are placed here for us to see. And in this holiday particularly, we are brought back to the nature of Atonement, and for the Christian this is an acceptance of the atonement and propitious gift of Grace offered on our behalf if we are his people elected to receive it.
There are no man made or church ordained holidays which will bring this to mind more, rather this specific and God ordained Holiday is designed and written about in a way to express Christ’s priesthood, His ability to atone, and what atonement he suffered upon the cross by subjecting himself to that death as a man. The priesthood of Christ is the focus of This Day of The Atonements, a reality we recognize as happening in the Heavenly Tabernacle in an Eternal setting, the Idea of a once and for all sacrifice which can reach backwards in to time an forward into the eons from a point of time which is in comprehensible to the human mind.
When we deal with the subject of, what is commonly called “the day of atonement or YuM KiPUR” on a modern Jewish calendar, which is more or less a form of short hand for the technical name of the day itself as it is spoken of in Scripture. In the before read part of Lev_23, the day is called eHZaH YUM eH-KiPoRIM literally translating out ‘A day for Atonements’, in Hebrew this word is plural where as the common shot hand in English or Hebrew often focus on a singular act of atonement KiPUR rather than KiPURIM.
This is because in the Jewish Talmudic view the focus is placed upon what is said in verses 29-30 concerning the affliction of the soul, understood as fasting, as well as the Sabbath of rest which are done by the people, the congregation. This same focus is generally the focus of the Christian who does not study YHWH God’s Law or have and understanding of the Law / the Torah in a systematic way. The focus is quickly shifted on the fact that God has commanded under penalty upon the soul , the soul being cut off from the people, and that is often translated into damnation or curse, so it seems to our fleshly mind upon first reading, without observation and consideration, that is trying to understand the words God has put here, that ‘this Day of Atonements’ is about a person afflicting themselves in fasting beside not working in Sabbath.

Rather however the plurality of the Atonement that is truly in focus by God speaks to the office which the high priest of the sons of Aaron performs on that day for the people, and this performance is plural for the priest to make intercession, the commandments upon the people have no certain connection to the enactment or quality of the Atonement at all, rather it is the work God has given the soul who is joined unto him to perform as a sign or witness to his faithfulness to YHWH which has given Israel as an elected body his Word.
Considering Leviticus 23 in its chronology in writing brings with it the knowledge of Lev_16:1-34.
In this Chapter we are informed that after Aaron’s sons Nadab and Abihu offered a strange incents or fire to YHWH, an incense which never was commanded to come before Him in worship, this was as good of intentioned as it may have been a willful act against God, and the leadership vested into the priesthood was thereby teaching the people to worship as they saw fit rather than by the Word of God and an understanding of it.
YHWH shows that in his mercy he will not allow the priests to come before him regularly, but only one time in a year, that is on this day we are discussing, on the 10th day of the 7th moon.
This aspect of atonement is often missed in simple reading as well, that this is a salvific mercy being offered to the priesthood, that rather than many atonements on many days through the year, YHWH shows a more perfect way to enter into the holy place only once in a year, where many atonements are made by the priest who is clean and holy and sanctified only one time in a year all these atonements are made, so that in a sense 1 Atonement KiPUR is not made on different days, but rather many Atonements are made KiPURIM on 1 day..the 10th day of the 7th Month.
Here is a summary of these atonements made on this 1 day, the word Atonement or KiPuR is named 15 times, there a 6 parts of this atonement which all fall into 3 categories of Atonements made on this day by the 1 High Priest for the people, and never is the fasting of the people or the keeping of this day as a Sabbath mentioned as to help atone in any way, rather the High Priest working according to the WORD of God and that 1 priests obedience is his part in this synergistic system.

The atonements on the day of atonements
Lev_16:6 .. for himself, and for his house.
Lev_16:10 the scapegoat, shall be presented alive before the LORD, to make an atonement with him..
Lev_16:11 …for himself, and shall make an atonement for himself, and for his house…
Lev_16:16 making…an atonement for the holy place, because of the uncleanness of the children of Israel, and because of their transgressions in all their sins: and so shall he do for the tabernacle of the congregation, that remaineth among them in the midst of their uncleanness.
Lev_16:18 …the altar that is before the LORD, and make an atonement for it…
Lev_16:24 another to …make an atonement for himself, and for the people.

And here is the summary:
Lev_16:29 And this shall be a statute for ever unto you: that in the seventh month, on the tenth day of the month, ye shall afflict your souls, and do no work at all, whether it be one of your own country, or a stranger that sojourneth among you:
Lev_16:30 For on that day shall the priest make an atonement for you, to cleanse you, that ye may be clean from all your sins before the LORD.
Lev_16:33 And he shall make an atonement for the holy sanctuary,
and he shall make an atonement for the tabernacle of the congregation,
and for the altar, and he shall make an atonement for the priests,
and for all the people of the congregation.
Lev_16:34 And this shall be an everlasting statute unto you, to make an atonement for the children of Israel for all their sins once a year. And he did as the LORD commanded Moses.
Notice that the stature imposed upon the people of Soul affliction and in the commanded Sabbath our side of the regular weekly cycle is not part of the Atonement at all, rather it is a thing to be done ‘Because’ on that day an atonement shall be made for you, to cleanse you, that ye may be clean from all your sins before YHWH.
The Fasting and Sabbath are done because on that day this was done and is being done and shall be done for you.
This is the Atonement God imposes because of the work of the priest according to His word.
And this is what we remember on this day of the Atonements, this is why we Fast to afflict our soul, there is no other biblical definition of soul affliction but to fast from food and drink and pleasurable things, the Scripture includes sackcloth and ashes in the affliction of one’s soul in several other places (To Fast or Not to Fast? That is the question on the day of Atonement). And so it is calling to the people to worship in this afflicted way on the Day of the Atonement, but fasting and personal soul affliction is not an atonement at all, nor has it ever been equated with the atonement upon this day, Rather the obedience of the Priest christened or anointed by YHWH above his fellows is the only man of focus in respect to the atonement.
And so we remember this 10th day of the 7th month in this way, not believing that we are atoning for anything with our hunger for but a day, or for our Sabbath rest on a day outside of the normal weekly Sabbath as many so often confuse concerning our practice, and this sadly is even the failure of some who keep the day as a Christian or messianic , that they impose into this worship the foolish jewish concept of self atonement seemingly indulged in by the Talmudists. And history shows us that this mentality and belief is not limited to jews but that Christians as well kept non-biblical missals and holidays and other practices as to achieve a form of justification before God, no different than the jew who fasts for his justification in whatever way he understands it to be effected.
This is a trap of the flesh and a pit fall all must be aware of, that our flesh desires a work or many works to atone for its own soul, if it be asking Jesus into ones heart, and thinking that action is a work enough to save, if it is the sinners prayer, and thinking that that prayer is enough to save, if it is baptism in the name of Jesus himself, and thinking that work in enough or part of enough to save, or if it is the taking of the communion elements of bread and wine every week or month or year is enough, or Circumcision, giving to the poor, or any work we do outside of true saving Grace, that is Grace moving through Faith it is a pitfall of the flesh and an attempt to pay for a gift of salvation.
Christ has no need for you help in his priesthood, in his entrance into the holy place, we do not help ourselves or Jesus Save us, He helps us entirely and we obey the Word of God because “By Grace ye are saved”.
Eph_2:8-10 For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast.
For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them.
We fast and Sabbath in worship because of Grace through Faith, because we are His workmanship to do what God said as his good works not because we think we can save ourselves.
And according to Scripture this is how it has always been since Moses spoke these words before ordained for us to walk in Christ.

So on this day, How do we keep the feasts?

By remembering Christ’s high priesthood seen in these very Laws and the emphasis YHWH would have us have at this time from the categories listed in Leviticus 16.
We continue to fast and keep this 10th day of the 7th month as a special Sabbath.
Since Christ our high priest is in a place far above all impurity his Atonement is secures and he is clean, and the heavenly tabernacle is clean, undefiled by sinners.
But still pray for our infirmities, for our selves, and for our families and for our congregations and for our nation as whole.
In our prayer and fasting to make intercession by prayers for those whose souls are cut off so that if it is possible they may be saved and find there source of atonement made for them in Christ.

Jesus made a surety of a better Covenant.
Heb_7:23 And they truly were many priests, because they were not suffered to continue by reason of death:
Heb 7:24 But this man, because he continueth ever, hath an unchangeable priesthood.
Heb 7:25 Wherefore he is able also to save them to the uttermost that come unto God by him, seeing he ever liveth to make intercession for them.
Heb 7:26 For such an high priest became us, who is holy, harmless, undefiled, separate from sinners, and made higher than the heavens;
Heb 7:27 Who needeth not daily, as those high priests, to offer up sacrifice, first for his own sins, and then for the people’s: for this he did once, when he offered up himself.
Heb 7:28 For the law maketh men high priests which have infirmity; but the word of the oath, which was since the law, maketh the Son, who is consecrated for evermore.

About JS Lowther

Foremost I know that I am a chief sinner saved by Grace. I am a servant of YHWH Almighty the one true God Who is Father, Son and Spirit. I believe in God's only begotten and perfect Son Jesu(s) Christ whose redemption power of my soul I have Faith in and testify of. Having been redeemed by the blood of Christ, I wish to no longer spend my time in the lusts of the flesh and of this world, but to promote the Gospel of the Kingdom by means of the knowledge of the New Covenant, a reNewal of the Covenant God made with his people Israel in the blood of Christ (Jer 31:31 and Heb 8:8) whereby He writes His Law upon the Heart and Mind beside the forgiveness of sin and transgressions. I believe Christ Jesus is the incarnate Son of God as the WORD made flesh, and the son of man born of the virgin Mary conceived of the Holy Spirit: I believe Christ Jesus Lived a perfect life for us as a living sacrifice as well as a pattern of the Sanctified newness of life a believer has in Him, I believe Christ Jesus died a cursed death on the Cross for His people of Covenant who are sinners, and I believe in Christ Jesus who Resurrected with power from Death from the grave to Justify the offenders. This is the same Jesus who is indeed the Son of David and king of Israel, who is both LORD and Christ over all the kings and dominions of the earth! In the fullness of time YHWH will regather his people under the Head of the Church, Jesu(s) Christ to affect his will according to the Lord's prayer, Psalm 2, 8 and 110 as well as Genesis 1:26. The focus of my administration of the Gospel is like unto my Lord's who said "I have come not but for the lost sheep of the house of Israel.."(Mathew 15:24), and so I have come to my European kinsman according to the flesh. It is my mission to show the Israel of God the Salvation which is taught by Scripture Alone and offered in all ages by Grace Alone through Faith Alone in the work of Christ Alone to the Glory of GOD Alone. As a modern day Puritan separatist it is my goal to purify the church of Christ with Faith heretofore stated. I am studying to show my self approved, if you have any questions just ask!
