THE LORD’S SUPPER

Christian Pascha

Sacrament of the Faith of Jesus Christ

Part 2

Types & anti-Types

I wish to start off with an arrangements of verses that demonstrates typology relevant to this subject of the Passover :

Gen_14:18 And Melchizedek king of Salem brought forth bread and wine: and he was the priest of the most high God.

Gen 14:19 And he blessed him, and said, Blessed be Abram of the most high God, possessor of heaven and earth:..

Gen_15:1 After these things the word of the LORD came unto Abram in a vision, saying, Fear not, Abram: I am thy shield, and thy exceeding great reward.

Gen 15:2 And Abram said, Lord GOD, what wilt thou give me, seeing I go childless, and the steward of my house is this Eliezer of Damascus?

Gen 15:3 And Abram said, Behold, to me thou hast given no seed: and, lo, one born in my house is mine heir.

Gen 15:4 And, behold, the word of the LORD came unto him, saying, This shall not be thine heir; but he that shall come forth out of thine own bowels shall be thine heir.

Gen 15:5 And he brought him forth abroad, and said, Look now toward heaven, and tell the stars, if thou be able to number them: and he said unto him, So shall thy seed be.

Gen 15:6 And he believed in the LORD; and he counted it to him for righteousness.

Gen 15:7 And he said unto him, I am the LORD that brought thee out of Ur of the Chaldees, to give thee this land to inherit it.

Gen 15:8 And he said, Lord GOD, whereby shall I know that I shall inherit it?

Gen 15:9 And he said unto him, Take me an heifer of three years old, and a she goat of three years old, and a ram of three years old, and a turtledove, and a young pigeon.

Gen 15:10 And he took unto him all these, and divided them in the midst, and laid each piece one against another: but the birds divided he not.

Gen 15:11 And when the fowls came down upon the carcases, Abram drove them away.

Gen 15:12 And when the sun was going down, a deep sleep fell upon Abram; and, lo, an horror of great darkness fell upon him.

Gen 15:13 And he said unto Abram, Know of a surety that thy seed shall be a stranger in a land that is not theirs, and shall serve them; and they shall afflict them four hundred years;

Gen 15:14 And also that nation, whom they shall serve, will I judge: and afterward shall they come out with great substance.

Gen 15:15 And thou shalt go to thy fathers in peace; thou shalt be buried in a good old age.

Gen 15:16 But in the fourth generation they shall come hither again: for the iniquity of the Amorites is not yet full.

Gen 15:17 And it came to pass, that, when the sun went down, and it was dark, behold a smoking furnace, and a burning lamp that passed between those pieces.

Gen_15:18 In the same day the LORD made a covenant with Abram, saying, Unto thy seed have I given this land

Exo_12:39 And they baked unleavened cakes of the dough which they brought forth out of Egypt, for it was not leavened; because they were thrust out of Egypt, and could not tarry, neither had they prepared for themselves any victual.

Exo 12:40 Now the sojourning of the children of Israel, who dwelt in Egypt, was four hundred and thirty years.

Exo 12:41 And it came to pass at the end of the four hundred and thirty years, even the selfsame day it came to pass, that all the hosts of the LORD went out from the land of Egypt.

Exo 12:42 It is a night to be much observed unto the LORD for bringing them out from the land of Egypt: this is that night of the LORD to be observed of all the children of Israel in their generations.

Jos_5:10 And the children of Israel encamped in Gilgal, and kept the passover on the fourteenth day of the month at even in the plains of Jericho.

Jos 5:11 And they did eat of the old corn of the land on the morrow after the passover, unleavened cakes, and parched corn in the selfsame day.

It is often that we hear the word antitype in the description of Christian representations, the above verses of Scripture are proof of such. The Passover lamb or of the Sacraments them selves as in reference to the Bread and Wine of the Communion meal or the Baptism of the remission of Sin), the important to keep the impressionary nature of this language clear. The actual word transliterated anti-type is anti-tup(o)n)s) as a compound only appears in the Canon of Scripture from Genesis to Revelation 2 times, in 1Pe_3:21 where Baptism is called an ‘anti-type’ of the flood of Noah’s day, and in Heb_9:24 where the hand made holy places of the temple and tabernacle are called ‘anti-types’ of the Heavenly Temple of God.

Literally, the Greek word for type more corresponds in it’s meaning with what we as English thinkers conceptualize in a ‘type writer’, remember those old gadgets that you literally struck a key and it sent a metal letter impressing it self onto a piece of paper with ink to leave ‘type’ of the propelled ‘anti-type’ upon the page? Why was the metal letter an antitype rather than a type? Because it was not the very image, but a negative or reverse of it. As I typed this message here a matched type of the letter on the key is appearing on the screen, no anti-type needed.

In this way also, making an impression of ones hand into clay is an antitype made. In the Idea of an ‘Anti-type’ this is what is being described, just as a negative image in photography is not ‘negative’ morally, but rather is just simply the opposite in correspondence of image, yet in sight it is very much the same. So an anti-type speaks to this wise, it is a word used often interchangeably with a ‘type’ but it is to be conceptualized very differently. For instance when we are told in:

Heb_9:24 For Christ is not entered into the holy places made with hands, which are the figures (anti-tupa) of the true; but into heaven itself, now to appear in the presence of God for us.

Just the Chapter prior in Hebrews 8:5 we are lead to understand that which the Law in Exo_25:40 says plainly: …make all things according to the pattern (tupon/ Type) shewed to thee in the mount. By this the correspondent verses in regards to the Pascha we often weigh it as it pertains to this glorious New Covenant, and in such it must be judged justly.

G499- ἀντίτυπονantitupon

an-teet’-oo-pon

Neuter of a compound of G473 and G5179; corresponding (“antitype”), that is, a representative, counterpart: – (like) figure (whereunto).

Most learned men of Scripture and language, including Noah Webster who I recommend one to consult on the word of ant-type, consider Christ’s death on Pascha Day as an Anti-Type of Passover, while most Christians today believe that it is the reverse, that is a type, and this is due to a higher believed status of the fictionalized Spiritual (that which is not revealed in scripture) regarding the Passover lamb and then that over spiritualized view being applied to Hebrews 8 and 9. Yet it should be understood that even when the temple was built in Jerusalem and the Pascha lambs that were killed in Jerusalem had a portion of there blood brought to the altar, this was an anti-type of the Exodus 12 type which was the original, and first Passover celebrated in this way by a Lamb Roast. In other word’s the Type or pattern of the temple in the Heaven’s provided for the altar, and the court, and all that pertains to the house it self, yet the offerings were declared to provide a shadow. And to this point we as well have the Idea of type and anti-type, yet much less defined. For if the sacrifices and offerings are the shadow and the Word is the Light then the body is of Christ, What is casting the shadow? the body of the man Jesus Christ with his pre-existant Light behind him from whence he came, and with out those two no shadow is made, and the law having a shadow of good things to come, is not the very image of the things, can never with those sacrifices which they offered year by year continually make the comers thereunto perfect.

Thus the point is this, as we consider all of these things: Not in the past, nor in the future nor presently can a sacrifice offered even upon the altar in Jerusalem make the comer perfect, yet rather as in all acts of obedience to God it by Grace through Faith ye are Saved, and if one would both consider every thing Said in the Law of God, such as in Leviticus, believing that it is as true and as perfect and as important of a word of God as the manifestation of Christ Jesus his self, it would be realized what Hebrews is saying in it’s holistic statement… those Sacrifices were, and will be only a shadow cast by the Body of the man Jesus Christ with his Word which makes Light by it’s utterance shining behind it. And while the Pascha Lamb was not for sin in Egypt, nor in Israel, nor has it ever been so declared, nor shall it ever be a Sacrifice for Sin, the remainder of the feast which we keep as Christians who see the resurrected Body of Christ, the shadow is not cast on the Side before his resurrection which cast’s the shadow towards the morning, but as those who see it after mid day with Light casting it’s dial towards the evening, we nonetheless have our shadows even now in lawful order and the LORD’S Supper is that shadow and is that Anti-type.

And it is to this wise the proceeding messages now come, with a full thought of types and Anti-types, which are to be acknowledged as we proceed through the most earth shaking Day of the world’s history, the day which on it’s very occurrence darkness filled the earth on account of the crucifixion of the Light of the World.

Remembering the citing in the Gospels of the coming of unleavened bread and of the Pascha / Passover told us in:

Mar_14:12; Luk_22:7 and Mat_26:17 Now before the feast of unleavened bread…

Which literally reads ‘τη δε πρωτη / the de prote ‘, where we see the word Prote as in ‘Proto’ as we use it in the English.

In further proof of this we as well have the book of John making this all the more clear:

Joh_13:1 Now before the feast of the passover (προ δε της εορτης του πασχα/ Pro de tes eortes tou Pasxa), when Jesus knew that his hour was come that he should depart out of this world unto the Father, having loved his own which were in the world, he loved them unto the end.

And this is important to keep the story line in place.

Luk_22:15 And he said unto them, With desire I have desired to eat this passover with you before I suffer:

Luk 22:16 For I say unto you, I will not any more eat thereof, until it be fulfilled in the kingdom of God.

Luk 22:17 And he took the cup, and gave thanks, and said, Take this, and divide it among yourselves:

Luk 22:18 For I say unto you, I will not drink of the fruit of the vine, until the kingdom of God shall come.

Luk 22:19 And he took bread, and gave thanks, and brake it, and gave unto them, saying, This is my body which is given for you: this do in remembrance of me.

Luk 22:20 Likewise also the cup after supper, saying, This cup is the new testament in my blood, which is shed for you.

Remember, Christ our Lord was not at this time eating the very Passover meal, but rather, he was eating a meal on the 14th day on account of it being after evening of the 13th day of the Month of Abib. It is how ever very important to remember the words which Christ spoke at this meal, and it is as well important to remember that Christ did not command any new commandment nor ceremony at this meal which was being had exactly 1 day / 24 hours before our Lord’s dead body would be in the garden tomb, rather the very purpose the commission “do this in remembrance of me.” is on account of the happening of that Day, Christ would have no ability to say this at the actual Paschal Meal.

Consider:

With exception to Christ himself and Judas, this Day was in everyone’s mind, including the disciples, as well as every faithful inhabitant of Judah, would have been in anticipation of the the Paschal meal, as described in Exodus 12 and 13 according to the Laws regulating the observance of it’s anti-type at this time:

Exo 12:5 Your lamb shall be without blemish, a male of the first year: ye shall take it out from the sheep, or from the goats:

Exo 12:6 And ye shall keep it up until the fourteenth day of the same month: and the whole assembly of the congregation of Israel shall kill it in the evening.

Exo 12:7 And they shall take of the blood, and strike it on the two side posts and on the upper door post of the houses, wherein they shall eat it.

Exo 12:8 And they shall eat the flesh in that night, roast with fire, and unleavened bread; and with bitter herbs they shall eat it.

Exo 12:9 Eat not of it raw, nor sodden at all with water, but roast with fire; his head with his legs, and with the purtenance thereof.

Exo 12:10 And ye shall let nothing of it remain until the morning; and that which remaineth of it until the morning ye shall burn with fire.

Exo 12:11 And thus shall ye eat it; with your loins girded, your shoes on your feet, and your staff in your hand; and ye shall eat it in haste: it is the LORD’S passover.

All that was just said was in the minds of the people of Israel living and celebrating in Judah, the Idea of celebration, of deliverance, of release from bondage. Yet it seems that only John the beloved even had an inclination of that which was happening, and even that inclination may have been added when John wrote his Testimony i hind sight, that which we read in John, yet the land and the people all celebrated while the disciples mourned. Fact that are to the shame of most professing Christians who don’t even know the nature of the day of our Lord’s Death.

Consider as well:

Seemingly, every one involved with this matter was planing on attending the Passover as a neighbor of Jesu according to Exo_12:4 And if the household be too little for the lamb, let him and his neighbor next unto his house take it according to the number of the souls; every man according to his eating shall make your count for the lamb.

It is perhaps word got around quickly when the friends and family of our Messiah came to the upper room to kill the lamb and prepare for the dinner, to sit around the fire pit as they roasted the Paschal Lamb to be consumed with unleavened bread and bitter herbs that night to come in the solemn yet celebratory communion meal of deliverance from bondage; it is very likely that beyond the 12 Disciples with Christ in Jerusalem was also his mother, his brother’s the women friends which are all mentioned, Lazarus perhaps and some of those who were cast out of the synagogue for their Faith in the Son of God; many of these did not live in Jerusalem, they had traveled, and with so much celebration in the air of Jerusalem if they were not planing to be together all would be in different rental rooms to lodge.

The Fact is There was no plan to skip this years Passover on account of the crucifixion of Christ as is often held in the minds of ignorant Christians, yet this thought was never conveyed, nor is it evident that this Passover would not happen the next evening and night to come on account of the level of admission the disciple says to this wise:

Joh_13:28 Now no man at the table knew for what intent he spake this unto him.

Joh 13:29 For some of them thought, because Judas had the bag, that Jesus had said unto him, Buy those things that we have need of against the feast; or, that he should give something to the poor.

What is the point I am wishing to convey?

It is the very plain and direct language of the text, one which disastrously is part of the conceptual Christianity which has shut the doors of the scripture, which has read over this part of the Disciple of Christ’s life. These men and those they taught did not neglect, ignore or rationalize away the Pascha as having been done 24 hours prior by the eating of bread and the drinking of wine with the Lord Jesus, nor did they believe that the death of Christ was the Passover that year , nor arguably in the years to come, nor did even those who knew the very apostles of Christ’s Kingdom them selves do so in the first century (which I shall show as this message proceeds).

As glorious as this sacrificial death of the only begotten son of Father God was, and as powerful as it is, and as absolute as the Scriptures proclaim it shall be; Christ’s blood is in our age THE propitiation for sin, The blood shed which has in it’s flow the very content remission for those who are his, it is important to remember that this sacrifice was not intended to replace Passover every year, but it was meant to envelope Passover every year.

A Type, and then a collective imagery of anti-types to be celebrated: of the time when Abram fought for his brother Lot and delivered him from bondage, when Abram communed with Melchizedek with bread and wine, the very Day YHWH God Justified Abram by Faith and it was counted as Righteousness, and gave him an exceedingly great reward in the promised land and seed in Christ; the exact execution to the day of the deliverance from Egyptian bondage in fulfillment to Abraham, and to the Day of Canaan’s conquest by Joshua; and now in the exceedingly great reward which was carried on by all those before it is consecration of the New Covenant by the Blood of Christ, the remembrance of his body broken for you, and the celebration of remission of sin and release from sin’s bondage!

There is no Greater Day to Celebrate the omnipotence of YHWH God than on the Passover day and in the feast of unleavened bread, and so according to the Law of God by Sacrament.

When Christ spoke: This is my body which is given for you: this do in remembrance of me.

Here is not a commandment to hold a different day beside passover day, nor is it in any way the command which affirms a new practice of an unlimited and undefined time to celebrate the Sacrament of Communion of bread and wine, but rather it was at the time Sanctified by YHWH God, that is the very time of Passover, the eating of the Paschal Meal.

And yet if any thing at all could be called an addition to the Paschal meal, though in the Communion of Melchizedek this is conveyed indeed, it is the wine, which in the law of Exodus has no requirement mentioned for wine to be drunk, yet it is hear that those who take the LORD’S Supper, that is the Passover, the Paschal meal, to the next level understand it’s place as found in Psa_116:13 as the cup of salvation.

A Psalm which flows out into the Day of Christ’s death, and while no proof is offered as to what Psalm was sung at that last supper this one is suiting:

I will take the cup of salvation, and call upon the name of the LORD.

Psa 116:14 I will pay my vows unto the LORD now in the presence of all his people.

Psa 116:15 Precious in the sight of the LORD is the death of his saints.

Psa 116:16 O LORD, truly I am thy servant; I am thy servant, and the son of thine handmaid: thou hast loosed my bonds.

Psa 116:17 I will offer to thee the sacrifice of thanksgiving, and will call upon the name of the LORD.

Psa 116:18 I will pay my vows unto the LORD now in the presence of all his people,

Psa 116:19 In the courts of the LORD’S house, in the midst of thee, O Jerusalem. Praise ye the LORD.

And is this not a proper and exact description of all that Christ did on that glorious 14th Day of the month of Abib? On the day we call Passover on the day of the Paschal meal?

Truly, AMEN

About JS Lowther

Foremost I know that I am a chief sinner saved by Grace. I am a servant of YHWH Almighty the one true God Who is Father, Son and Spirit. I believe in God's only begotten and perfect Son Jesu(s) Christ whose redemption power of my soul I have Faith in and testify of. Having been redeemed by the blood of Christ, I wish to no longer spend my time in the lusts of the flesh and of this world, but to promote the Gospel of the Kingdom by means of the knowledge of the New Covenant, a reNewal of the Covenant God made with his people Israel in the blood of Christ (Jer 31:31 and Heb 8:8) whereby He writes His Law upon the Heart and Mind beside the forgiveness of sin and transgressions. I believe Christ Jesus is the incarnate Son of God as the WORD made flesh, and the son of man born of the virgin Mary conceived of the Holy Spirit: I believe Christ Jesus Lived a perfect life for us as a living sacrifice as well as a pattern of the Sanctified newness of life a believer has in Him, I believe Christ Jesus died a cursed death on the Cross for His people of Covenant who are sinners, and I believe in Christ Jesus who Resurrected with power from Death from the grave to Justify the offenders. This is the same Jesus who is indeed the Son of David and king of Israel, who is both LORD and Christ over all the kings and dominions of the earth! In the fullness of time YHWH will regather his people under the Head of the Church, Jesu(s) Christ to affect his will according to the Lord's prayer, Psalm 2, 8 and 110 as well as Genesis 1:26. The focus of my administration of the Gospel is like unto my Lord's who said "I have come not but for the lost sheep of the house of Israel.."(Mathew 15:24), and so I have come to my European kinsman according to the flesh. It is my mission to show the Israel of God the Salvation which is taught by Scripture Alone and offered in all ages by Grace Alone through Faith Alone in the work of Christ Alone to the Glory of GOD Alone. As a modern day Puritan separatist it is my goal to purify the church of Christ with Faith heretofore stated. I am studying to show my self approved, if you have any questions just ask!
