Part 9

Departing from the Faith, a Seared Conscience, and Abstaining from Sanctified Meats

1 Timothy 4:1-5

A Creed
of
1 Timothy 1:15-17

This is a faithful saying,
and worthy of all acceptation, that:
Christ Jesus – came into the world
to save sinners;
Of whom – I am chief.

Howbeit
For this cause – I obtained mercy,

That- In me first
Jesus Christ
Might shew forth – all longsuffering,
For a pattern – to them
Which should hereafter – believe on him
To life everlasting.

As He is: King:
Eternal,
Immortal,
Invisible,
The only wise God,
Honored and glorified
forever and ever
Amen

A Creed of 1Timothy 3:16
Without Controversy:

Great- is the mystery of godliness:
(That) God was:
Manifest-
In the flesh –

Justified:

In the Spirit-
seen of angels:

preached

In the Nations –
believed on:

In the world –
received:
In glory!

1Ti_4:1
I. Now the Spirit speaketh expressly, that in the latter times
A. some shall depart from the faith,
1. giving heed to
a. seducing spirits,
b. and doctrines of devils;
1Ti 4:2
2. Speaking lies in hypocrisy; having their conscience seared with a hot iron;
1Ti 4:3
a. Forbidding to marry,
b. to abstain from meats, which God hath created to be received with thanksgiving of them which believe and know the truth.
1Ti 4:4  For every creature of God is good, and nothing to be refused, if it be received with thanksgiving:
1Ti 4:5  For it is sanctified by the word of God and prayer.

In this first verse of ch 4 we have to recognize that it is a statement in continuation of the confession we had made and the last verse of the 3rd chapter. So often we let these chapter breaks also break our thoughts.

This is important because we can here see that “The Spirit speaketh expressly, that in the latter times some shall depart from the faith,” that is the πιστ-εως G4102 and just 18 words ago in the writing of this epistle we have the word επιστ-ευθη G4100 this in the word believed, as in “believed on in the world”.
Of course in general this πιστ / belief or faith is directly linked to the Gentiles or the Nation’s faith in the preaching of Jesus who was manifest justified in the flesh, In the Spirit seen of Angels and preached and IN THE Nations Believed on In the World ” meaning by faith it was received and In the Nations it was believed”.
So Paul tells us “The Spirit speaketh expressly, that in the latter times some shall depart from the faith”, and the most relevant Faith in focus to this immediate context is this Spiritual preaching of Jesus that is even seen of the angels, the heavenly messengers, when faith is implanted into the heart of God’s Covenant people, and faith is actuated in the world in the receiving of this heavenly message of God (the Gospel/ Good Message) that God was manifest in the flesh Justified, the point being made is that the this was God made flesh, and therefore a Just man, the Just one, the righteous branch of the prophets, this is the what was seen by Angels in the Spirit…

This is the Heb 1:4  Being made so much better than the angels, inheritance obtained by Christ in the flesh in a more excellent name than the angels could have.
And so what says the scripture:
Heb 1:5  For unto which of the angels said he at any time, Thou art my Son, this day have I begotten thee? And again, I will be to him a Father, and he shall be to me a Son?
Heb 1:6  And again, when he bringeth in the firstbegotten into the world, he saith, And let all the angels of God worship him.
Heb 1:7  And of the angels he saith, Who maketh his angels spirits, and his ministers a flame of fire.
Heb 1:8  But unto the Son he saith, Thy throne, O God, is for ever and ever: a sceptre of righteousness is the scepter of thy kingdom. And in Psa_45:6-7,

See the interpretation provided for of what the Psalmist is speaking of :

“But unto the Son he saith, Thy throne, O God”,

a similarly confirming the statement that the Son, spoken of manifest was God manifest in the flesh Justified, or The Son sitting at the right hand of the Father yet siting in the throne of God possesses a scepter of righteousness.
and in ending this point let me add:

Heb 1:13  But to which of the angels said he at any time, Sit on my right hand, until I make thine enemies thy footstool?
Heb 1:14  Are they not all ministering spirits, sent forth to minister for them who shall be heirs of salvation?
Now see this message, relayed again that God manifest In the flesh Justified is In the Spirit preached of the ministering angels, and they preach the Glorification of God manifest.

And I encourage you to continue to read the 2nd chapter of Hebrews also in this Conjunction, make in the our Confession from 1 Tim 3:16.

So here is the point, “the Spirit speaks expressedly, that in the latter times some shall depart from the faith” and that faith in the Spirit seen of angels and preached to be believed on in the world and received is the core of ‘The Faith’.
That is a Christocentric Faith In the Nations believed on, and In the world received.
In your mind make this distinction, (maybe capitalize) ‘The Faith’ (τηςG3588 T-GSF πιστεωςG4102 N-GSF ) in 1Tim_4:1, and Do not be confused!

When we speak of ‘Departing from The Faith we are not speaking of departing from Believing or having Faith as a verb, which is an action word.
Believing or having Faith is an active part of the will!
It is: Not ‘The Faith’ as an idea you have come to, Not The Faith as a doctrine you are considering, Not The Faith as a representative community you are part of or want to be part of, or think you are part of.
And so while the Faith should be full of those with active faith, that is with believers- those Paul is addressing have Departed from this body, very much so the same aas what John say, “they went out from us because they were not of us.
they went out from The Idea of The Faith ( the noun), US, because they were not of the active faith of the common belief of God manifest in the flesh- justified- In the spirit seen of angels and preached thereby believed on in the world- Received In Glory with Christ in spiritual places, as the right hand of the father on the throne of God!
These have departed from this Idea, which is true to the believer, believed on by the believer, but those who have walked away or departed didn’t believe actively, having not received it unto glory with Christ…
And so they departed from it as a thing as a noun, as a person, place or thing.
Here is the lesson I want every one today to walk away with and keep with them, If Faith is a person, place or thing (a Noun) and you have not been moved by it, an are not active by it, having received it thus In glory, you need to fall on your face before God and repent to get The Faith that comes by Faith that In the Spirit- Faith – seen by angels -Faith- Preached -Faith -Received – Faith that IS the Glory of God Manifest in the Flesh for you.

So, “…in the latter times some shall depart from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits, and doctrines of devils; ”
These who have walked away from the thing of Faith they once stood before in consideration of its doctrine, and have come near to a spirit of delusion, a spirit that seduces its hearer and with is brings a doctrine not sound a doctrine not healthy or hygienic as it sound doctrine indicates, but rather a doctrine of devils or more properly the instruction of demons.
Now in this statement, the apostle and the holy Spirit are expressing a phrase and idea that brings with it scriptural relevance, that is the statement in the “seducing spirits and doctrine of devils” has prior meaning and context we should tie to what was said prior in the epistle in chapter 1, that is of those who have turned to other doctrine, now desire to be teachers of the law but know not what they say or affirm, and those who teach the fables or mythos the shut matters unto the gendering of questions and the endless genealogies of them, those things which oppose the possessors of unfeigned faith with pure heart and good conscience. and also remember it was the bishops and deacons job aid these faithful in opposing those teaching other doctrine, and also of this last recognition of what summary of The Faith which all hold as faith believed concerning God manifest in the flesh Justified, and In the Spirit seen of angels preached, which we understand in the words of our confession.
So this warning is added to in this warning that this is a time when people have departed to seducing spirits and with it a doctrine of devils (which ultimately is a doctrine of lies), but in a biblical context this first phrase “seducing spirits” is found used of a similar meaning, and specificly a meaning of mixing: Isa_19:14 The LORD hath mingled a perverse spirit in the midst thereof: and they have caused Egypt to err in every work thereof, as a drunken man staggereth in his vomit.
Our KJV says “perverse spirit” here, the Brenton LXX says “a spirit of error”, “a spirit addicted to a delusion”, a variation of the same Greek phrase is ‘πνευμασινG4151 N-DPN πλανοιςG4108 A-DPN ‘/ pneumasin planois ‘”seducing spirits” in 1 Tim 4:1 KJV. And so what is able to be seen from this idea that this carries with it, is not a total rejection of the manifestation of Christ, but a seductive or delusional spirit mixed with it a doctrine that is not sound or healthy, that is hygienic for those being instructed or teaching it, but a doctrine that is of lies, but is of the spirit realm and about the spirit realm.
The matter is pressing to understand the language of the

1Ti 4:2  Speaking lies in hypocrisy; having their conscience seared with a hot iron;

first, this is that these men are being seduced and following doctrines of devils, yet speaking lies in hypocrisy, and that because their conscience was wounded in some way and in order to quickly get it to stop bleeding, rather than taking time for it to heal naturally you need to cauterize  a wound or sear a wound to cause the bleeding to stop in the body; in these days it was common on the battle field for instance to take a red hot iron and force it into or on to the wounded part of the body, thereby burn the infection out, hopefully, and other times sear the flesh to make a burn that doesn’t bleed but is still not ‘healed’. So this is the quick way to get back on your feet, especially in battle.
Well in the case of one who is speaking lies and hypocrisy or doing so like an actor , in other words they no not what they say or what they affirm, when these have a wound administer to their conscience a pricing of the heart, with the intent to show truth and correct the seduction thy have turned to, rather than giving that us and turning to the Faith, these rather prefer to act lie they know what they are saying and what they are affirming, and with this doctrine of devils, this doctrine  mixed with what knowledge of the Faith they have to patch up their conscience as to continue teaching and speaking about:

Ti 4:3
a. Forbidding to marry,
b. to abstain from meats

Now Paul already dealt with forbidding to Mary when he taught Christian women to be wives and mothers (in ch 2 and 3), and men who desired the offices of church Oversight and Servitude to be married men with families, that ruled their families well. So Paul doesn’t even hit that subject, immediately, rather he totally turns his attention to the 2nd point to abstain from meats.

Now Contextually, in the whole New Testament the Church had questions about what foods were fit for the Christian mouth, and this subject never once entertains the context of clean or unclean food as was taught by YHWH via the directives of Moses…

Not once did Jesus contextually deal with it in (Mat_15:2, Mat_23:25-26; Mar_7:3-4; Luk_11:38-40 ), but rather spoke of a tradition of the elders concerning foods eaten with unwashed hands- plain and simple, just let the text speak for it self.

Not in Peters vision of the sheet come down from heaven in Act_10:14-28 ; Act_11:8.
that was expressly interpreted to mean the un-circumcised Gentiles to have been Justified and sanctified by the word of God preached to them by (angel).

And for this Cause Peter clearly didn’t get the vision, as his answer to the Lord was clearly according to scripture, in testing the spirits, ” Not so, Lord; for I have never eaten any thing that is common or unclean. and again he “doubted in himself what this vision which he had seen should mean?” meaning he knew the interpretation wasn’t what we read he saw.

But you know it has always been interesting to me that the most studied exegete, never read these verse in context like they do the ones concerning other matters of Christian conduct.

And so While this is not the context here either, but rather a context spoken of else where in very similar language and ties to the context of the lie in hypocrisy the doctrine of devils and holistic biblical context also of the way this subject is spoke of.

Pollution of devils

Act_15:20 But that we write unto them, that they abstain from pollutions of idols…

and

Act_15:29  That ye abstain from meats offered to idols, and from blood, and from things strangled, and from fornication: from which if ye keep yourselves, ye shall do well…

So very clearly, the council of Apostles them selves determined this set of food prohibitions which was known to Paul. So notice Paul’s expression of “abstain from meats offered to idols” in the context of “abstain from pollutions of idols”.

Act_15:20  … that they abstain from pollutions of idols…
All agreed, as Paul taught, that if one is actually polluted in his conscience by eating meat offered to an idol this is where the trouble lies, and one should abstain- not that the idol is a god in the heavens or upon earth, as the scripture plainly tell us multiple place that idols are not spiritual realities, they are no god or beings at all:
While we do see language concerning devils ( LXX. δαιμονιοις G1140 ) through out the Law and the Prophets:

The song of Moses, Deu_32:17 Israel sacrificed unto devils, not to God;

In Lev_17:7 says: …they shall no more offer their sacrifices unto devils, after whom they have gone a whoring.

David in Psa_106:37-38 says, …they sacrificed their sons and their daughters unto devils…

And so is a doctrine of devils in relationship to this lie in hypocrisy of point b. “to abstain from meats” ?
Or is it of the entirely a newly imported idea, as some say teaching the Laws of God, particularly found in Lev_11:1-47 and Deu_14:1-29 is a doctrine of devils though it is part of YHWH God’s Word?

Well, seemingly the doctrine of Devils indicates a scriptural consistency with the the apostles and Paul Acts 15 and

1Co_10:20 But I say, that the things which the Gentiles sacrifice, they sacrifice to devils, and not to God: and I would not that ye should have fellowship with devils.
Why?
1Co 10:21  Ye cannot drink the cup of the Lord, and the cup of devils: ye cannot be partakers of the Lord’s table, and of the table of devils.
1Co 10:22  Do we provoke the Lord to jealousy? are we stronger than he?

1Co 10:23  All things are lawful for me, but all things are not expedient: all things are lawful for me, but all things edify not.
1Co 10:24  Let no man seek his own, but every man another’s wealth.
1Co 10:25  Whatsoever is sold in the shambles, that eat, asking no question for conscience sake:
1Co 10:26  For the earth is the Lord’s, and the fulness thereof.
1Co 10:27  If any of them that believe not bid you to a feast, and ye be disposed to go; whatsoever is set before you, eat, asking no question for conscience sake.

1Co 10:28  But if any man say unto you, This is offered in sacrifice unto idols, eat not for his sake that shewed it, and for conscience sake: for the earth is the Lord’s, and the fulness thereof: Psa 24:1
1Co 10:29  Conscience, I say, not thine own, but of the other:
for why is my liberty judged of another man’s conscience?
1Co 10:30  For if I by grace be a partaker, why am I evil spoken of for that for which I give thanks?

Now notice the similarity of contextual speech:

1Ti_4:3 … Speaking lies in hypocrisy; … to abstain from meats, which God hath created to be received with thanksgiving of them which believe and know the truth.
1Ti 4:4  For every creature of God is good, and nothing to be refused, if it be received with thanksgiving:
1Ti 4:5  For it is sanctified by the word of God and prayer.

And so, ultimately what is this ending part of Paul’s admonition concerning this doctrine of devils?
That as is also, expressed by the same apostle and the counsel of Acts 15, this abstinence from meats (or lit. foods).

This command is directly towards :

1. meats,
a. which God hath created to be received with thanksgiving
b. of them which believe
c. and know the truth.

This statement is not concerning those out side of this scope of speech.

It is only concerning foods God created to be received, and that with thanks giving, therefore by strong prescription and proscription / law for what to eat as well as law saying what not to eat / what is abominable and what is holy or set aside / what is clean or unclean, we can consistently know Paul’s exegetical mean would follow the same understanding as Noah, Moses, the prophets, Jesus and the other apostles.

Concerning the Sanctification of foods and the Sanctified people:

Lev_11:44  For I am the LORD your God: ye shall therefore sanctify yourselves, and ye shall be holy; for I am holy: neither shall ye defile yourselves with any manner of creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth. Lev_20:7, also cited in 1Pe_1:15-16 .

And so this is what would be understood of those foods made by God to be received, they are the
1Ti 4:4  ‘every creature of God’ that is good, and nothing to be refused, if it be received with thanksgiving:
1Ti 4:5  For it is sanctified by the word of God and prayer.

Therefore, the maintained and present understanding of these words are entirely speaking of a doctrine of Devils, which Paul describes in 1 Corinthians and elsewhere , which these teachers and speakers in scope are teaching by not teaching ps_24:1 the earth is the world and the fullness thereof, these are not speaking of idols being devils and directly following it with sound doctrine that lawful teaches that these be no gods, but are dumb, mute idols. And so this changes sound doctrine and mixes it or mingles it with the seductive delusion that eating meat that was offered or slaughtered in the name and religious observance of an idol (as was common in this day) was not to be eaten at all because it is observance to that devils worship.

And so on one hand Paul and the Jerusalem council agrees, that if your conscience is polluted by eating such meat you should not eat, but if you are faithful to YHWH, if you are grounded in the Gospel, you know that the earth is the LORD’s and everything in it, and that meat offered to idols was offered to nothing, to vanity. But a doctrine of devils that teaches Not to eat meats that are clean according to the word of God, the law of God, is a doctrine that implants in the mind of its adherents that idols are real, that there are other gods beside YHWH, and ultimately it proves the faithlessness of the teacher of such vanity, and matters God has shut by the proclamation of his Word, and this doctrine that names YHWH and his Christ is in fact not only part of that which those desiring to be teachers of the law know not what they affirm or what they say, but they are lies hypocritically told to the hearers.
Seducing doctrine mingled with the faith of Jesus Christ, is the doctrine that teaches that the earth is not YHWH the LORD’s and the fullness there of (all of it), because we have to watch out for those devils this meat belongs to,This is a doctrine of devils, lies spoken in hypocrisy, but the sound doctrine, the healthy instructions, the hygienic prescription is that of

1Ti 4:4  ‘every creature of God’ that is good, and not one to be refused(for these reasons), if it be received with thanksgiving (to YHWH God an Him alone):

1Ti 4:5  For every one of His good creatures are sanctified by the word of God and prayer.

Making it expressly plain that Paul is specifically speaking of those the word of God sanctifies by that admonition of the LORD your God:

…ye shall therefore sanctify yourselves, and ye shall be holy (sanctified); for I am holy (sanctified): neither shall ye defile yourselves…

About JS Lowther

Foremost I know that I am a chief sinner saved by Grace. I am a servant of YHWH Almighty the one true God Who is Father, Son and Spirit. I believe in God's only begotten and perfect Son Jesu(s) Christ whose redemption power of my soul I have Faith in and testify of. Having been redeemed by the blood of Christ, I wish to no longer spend my time in the lusts of the flesh and of this world, but to promote the Gospel of the Kingdom by means of the knowledge of the New Covenant, a reNewal of the Covenant God made with his people Israel in the blood of Christ (Jer 31:31 and Heb 8:8) whereby He writes His Law upon the Heart and Mind beside the forgiveness of sin and transgressions. I believe Christ Jesus is the incarnate Son of God as the WORD made flesh, and the son of man born of the virgin Mary conceived of the Holy Spirit: I believe Christ Jesus Lived a perfect life for us as a living sacrifice as well as a pattern of the Sanctified newness of life a believer has in Him, I believe Christ Jesus died a cursed death on the Cross for His people of Covenant who are sinners, and I believe in Christ Jesus who Resurrected with power from Death from the grave to Justify the offenders. This is the same Jesus who is indeed the Son of David and king of Israel, who is both LORD and Christ over all the kings and dominions of the earth! In the fullness of time YHWH will regather his people under the Head of the Church, Jesu(s) Christ to affect his will according to the Lord's prayer, Psalm 2, 8 and 110 as well as Genesis 1:26. The focus of my administration of the Gospel is like unto my Lord's who said "I have come not but for the lost sheep of the house of Israel.."(Mathew 15:24), and so I have come to my European kinsman according to the flesh. It is my mission to show the Israel of God the Salvation which is taught by Scripture Alone and offered in all ages by Grace Alone through Faith Alone in the work of Christ Alone to the Glory of GOD Alone. As a modern day Puritan separatist it is my goal to purify the church of Christ with Faith heretofore stated. I am studying to show my self approved, if you have any questions just ask!
