(1Tim ch.1-3 Recap)
A Creed
of
1 Timothy 1:15-17This is a faithful saying,
and worthy of all acceptation, that:
Christ Jesus – came into the world
to save sinners;
Of whom – I am chief.Howbeit
For this cause – I obtained mercy,That- In me first
Jesus Christ
Might shew forth – all longsuffering,
For a pattern – to them
Which should hereafter – believe on him
To life everlasting.As He is: King:
Eternal,
Immortal,
Invisible,
The only wise God,
Honored and glorified
forever and ever
Amen

b. Grave
c. not slanderers,

e. faithful in all things.1Ti 3:12
9. Let the deacons be the husbands of one wife, ruling:

b. and great boldness in the faith which is in Christ Jesus.
1Ti 3:14 These things write I unto thee, hoping to come unto thee shortly:
1Ti 3:15 But if I tarry long, that thou mayest know how thou oughtest to behave thyself in the house of God, which is the church of the living God, the pillar and ground of the truth.
1Ti 3:16 And without controversy great is the mystery of godliness: God was manifest in the flesh, justified in the Spirit, seen of angels, preached unto the Gentiles, believed on in the world, received up into glory.
So today we are going to focus on the 10th point of our outline :
1Ti_3:13
10. For they that have used the office of a deacon well purchase/procure,G4046 to themselves:
a. a good degree / stepG898 well G2570
b. and great boldness in the faith which is in Christ Jesus.
A Literal translation could say:
1Ti 3:13 For the ones well serving G1247 (deacon-ing), stepG898 themselves well G2570 to procure,G4046 and much confidenceG3954 in faith,G4102 that is in Christ Jesus.
We see here that the office of a Deacon is his service, his serving is his deaconship. I think the sense expressed in these terms was what we also read prior from the words of our Lord concerning the leadership or chief position among the apostles, namely that:
Mat_20:25 …the Heads of the Nations exercise dominion over them, and they that are great exercise authority upon them.
Mat 20:26 But it shall not be so among you: but whosoever will be great among you, let him be your Servant G1249 ;
Mat 20:27 And whosoever will be chief among you, let him be your servant slave G1401 :
Mat 20:28 Even as the Son of man came not to be ServedG1249, but to serveG1249, and to give his life a ransom for many.
Here we see the same concept of the One Serving well, that in his service he finds his degree as chief, we see that to fulfill the office of a deacon purchases to itself its own step in procurement or purchase that which it’s service is.
That is that this degree or step forward or upward, as it were, in service is a step to serve. This man’s nature pays for itself so to speak, he is well rewarded by his service, and he serves to procure service.
In short we often say of men or women with this disposition, “They gets paid doing what they love to do”.
And so here is the point, a Deacon is a Servant , and serving is his job, and by Serving the Church well, he steps into a standing that procures or purchases a good standing simply and naturally because of who he is in all of the requirements men have deemed him fit for, but also in his present service he is see to be a man in good standing in his place of service and this is its own reward which he has purchased.
1Pe_4:10-11, says it like this,
“ As every man hath received the gift, even so minister / serve / deacon the same one to another, as good stewards (Oiko-nomoiG3623 / house lawyer) of the manifold grace of God.
1Pe 4:11 If any man speak, let him speak as the oracles of God; if any man minister (Deacon / Serve) , let him do it as of the ability which God giveth: that God in all things may be glorified through Jesus Christ, to whom be praise and dominion for ever and ever. Amen. “
So here is the point, while the context here is in dealing with all men being the steward or lawyer, a steward administering the rules of God’s house hold in their own respective position, whatever that may be, the house of God’s Grace they have been placed into their they shall serve each other well, if they are a speaker of the glorious Gospel of King Jesus or if they are a simple table waiter a servant “let him do it as of the ability which God gives to you: that God in all things may be glorified through Jesus Christ… How much more shall a man who bears the title of Servant?
How much more shall a man called a Minister, Minister to others of the ability which God has given him and called him a Minister by. Yea, this man and his wife, and his family should be the pinnacles of Servant people in teaching the Stewardship of the Grace and Faith of God, that is being the Economists of God In faith, Being the servants of the House hold of God they have been placed in by God’s hand.
Every faithful person has a place in the house hold of Faith, and every person has received a gift from the Grace of God to serve the others in this house, and the example of that service in the Church for Fathers is going to be admonished by watching the Deacon serve the church as a whole, for young people and Novices in the Church family to see this Servant serve people who often do not appreciate his Servant qualities, namely his being like the Overseer is to be, that is replicating the attributes of a Head Judge.
So let us remember these attributes as we close up chapter 3:
The attributes of a Judge or Episcope of the unite, that the Deacon is ‘Likewise’ ultimately appeals to, being :
An able man, such as fear God, a man of truth, a man who hates covetousness; a man placed as rulers of thousands, and rulers of hundreds, rulers of fifties, and rulers of tens:
a man willing to judge the people at all seasons, of your tribe.. Exo_18:21-22A wise man, a understanding man, and a man known among his family and community his tribe to be so… an appointed head of the Church.’ Not partial in judgment. One who hears the small and the great alike. A man not intimidated or afraid by anyone, for the Law of judgment he speaks from is God’s Law to govern his house hold. And ultimately a man who has gravity enough to know when a case is too hard for him, and is willing to bring such to higher judgment.’ Deu_1:14-17
And beyond that, in the Deacons own person his service is strikingly, a man of:
2. gravity
3. of singular reasonable words
4. of a non-drunken person
5. and in dealing lawfully and honestly in his gain by buisness
6. And as we spoke of last week at leangth, in his personal Holding of the mystery of the faith in a pure conscience.
This is the
a. good degree / the stepG898 well G2570 taken of the Minister in his Ministering by which he procures his office to himeslef :
And this Service as Deacon, the ministry that ministers and shows
b. great boldness in the faith which is in Christ Jesus.
And this is the nature of the service which procures its own reward.
And so how Does Paul end these statements:
1Ti_3:14 These things write I unto thee, hoping to come unto thee shortly:
1Ti 3:15 But if I tarry long, that thou mayest know how thou oughtest to behave thyself in the house-hold of God, which is the church of the living God, the pillar and ground of the truth.
Notice this, Paul’s intention was to elaborate upon these point more shortly, But Paul says, “if I tarry long, that thou mayest know how thou oughtest to behave thyself in the house of God”
Therefore Paul Gave Timothy Enough information in these first 3 chapters of this Epistle to not only show what the Proper Doctrine was that other teacher of the Law unlawfully taught “not knowing what they say, nor whereof they affirm”, where in they have swerved off the road sound doctrine by vain words, not focused on a doctrine of non-faked faith that commands ,Love from a pure heart, and a good conscience, but Paul thus far gave enough information to correct this doctrine of fables and endless generations of questioning, by teaching a Stewardship in the house-hold of God, which is the Called-out of the living God, by the Law of God used Lawfully.
Teaching the proper use of the Law as being not made for a righteous man, but for the lawless man and the disobedient man, for the ungodly and for sinners, for unholy and profane, for parent haters, for manslayers, whoremongers, homosexuals, for men stealers, liars, perjurers, and for any other lawless and disobedient sinners opposed to healthy teaching from the Law, also called “sound Doctrine”.
It was by swerving from the lawful use of the Law, and that use not being ministered to the people by qualified minister or servants in life and in teaching that Paul turned his attention to the this subject, in reminding the church whose job it is to teach the Nations among whom they live Faith and verity /truth, it was for this cause Paul told Timothy to teach Lawful, sound doctrine by teaching repentance from sin right beside the constant reminder, nay, the faithful saying worthy of all and every ones accepting of it, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners; of whom I am chief! as the breath of ever word of teaching, knowing that we obtained mercy in our selves first, knowing Jesus Christ might show forth all longsuffering, for a pattern to them which should hereafter believe on him to life everlasting.
It was by this profession and reassertion of the simplicity of the Gospel unto the King eternal, immortal, invisible, yes the only wise God honored and glorified forever, that the Christian soldier and steward, the warrior servant of the King find his firm hold upon the faith, by a grip never to be let go of unlike those who blaspheme and are delivered to Satan by shipwreck of feigned faith, that is not truly believing in this faithful saying and the charge of warfare that comes with it to fight and not let go of the rutter of the battle ship but to charge your vessel straight ahead.
By this directive of good warfare, and with sound doctrine of the use and application of Law of God used lawfully, of faith not feigned, ultimately of a healthy knowledge of one’s service to the king:
Paul taught us the reality of our exhortation as this soldier of faith, to petition for all men, pray for all men get involved for all men, and also giving of thanks for all men, specifically for kings and authorities that we men of Christian warfare might lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and honesty.
This is what we desire, to see kings and authority beside all the rest of the Nation see our godliness and honesty and repent by the knowledge of the truth with it holds. Namely this, that …there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus; 1Ti 2:6 Who gave himself a ransom for all, to be testified in due time.
Paul said enough to Timothy to roll this whole sentiment of dismissing the unlawful use of the law into the teaching of Law by the churches Faith and verity, that in every part of life men and women would show for this godliness and honesty together.
By Men who lift up holy hands without the authorities wrath and doubting. And those Christian women could show the affects of the faith unfeigned which they posses also by their adornment with good works more than vain beauty and precious things.
Our prayers four our women use the law lawfully and live by the good works Christ’s Law commands to be lived out by a pure heart and good conscience and a faith not fake, insomuch that a woman professing godliness can bot learn and teach salvation by the mere womanhood she possesses if she continue in faith holiness and a sober mind.
Paul has thus far rolled up this mission of Timothy to teach the house hold Law of Faith, the Economy of God in Faith also by the establishment Lawful leaders of the Church, that is head Judges of unites of the church comprised of families of tribes to Oversee the affairs and to judge the Christian matters of the church and its covenant families, a man who was
blameless or unassailable / “not over taken”.
2. the husband of one wife
3. vigilant,
4. sober,
5. of good behaviour,
6. given to hospitality,
7. apt to teach;
8. Not given to wine,
9. no striker,
10. not greedy of filthy lucre;
11. but patient,
12. not a brawler,
13. not covetous;
14. One that ruleth well his own house,
a. having his children in subjection with all gravity;
That is knowing how to rule his own house, to take care of the church of God.
b. Not a novice, and have a good report of them which are without;
and also by all of this likewise are these Servants to be like.
And not only them but also these Over seers of the Church and their Servants under their oversight with their wives are to show for this same godliness, honesty in faith and verity to the Community they are among.
That Jesus Christ might display his perfect patience as an example to those who were to believe in him for eternal life. In us, his Called-out representatives.
There for we end with this chapters final statement concerning the church before the Confessional statement concerning the mystery of godliness to wit we are greatly involved in, and that final statement is Summarized in this statement that if you are a faithful person to
“know how one ought to behave in the household of God, which is the church of the living God, a pillar and ground of the truth. ”
Do you realize the meaning of this statement of all this behavior we have summarized and covered is the behaviors of the house hold of God, a household with a house hold law, and stewards of that economy? This representation in the communities we live among as the people of God are the pillar and ground of the truth!
Not the support of the Gospel alone, but in fact that the whole idea of truth rests upon the household of God.
