True Reformation:
The Reforming of the Church according to Scripture
Part 4
Sanctified Through the Truth
In the prior message it was discussed how YHWH’s curse was the opposition of his Blessing, which was prior described, a way of walking with YHWH GOD with it’s zenith thus:
Lev_26:11 And I will set my tabernacle among you: and my soul shall not abhor you.
Lev 26:12 And I will walk among you, and will be your God, and ye shall be my people.
Lev 26:13 I am YHWH your God, which brought you forth out of the land of Egypt, that ye should not be their bondmen; and I have broken the bands of your yoke, and made you go upright.
From literal Egyptian bondage which no doubt had a spiritual impact on the morality of the Israelite people YHWH delivers or Saves them to cause them ‘to go UPRIGHT’, (קוממיות / QUM MYUTh that is to ‘come up’, the purpose of the salvation from bondage was so that Israel could have the liberty to walk with their God according to his ways, his Laws of Holiness, that is His Holy Law, this could as well be said his Sanctified Law. YHWH God’s Gift or Grace of freedom was to alow for His son to go, “that he may serve me”.
KJV
Lev 20:7 Sanctify yourselves therefore, and be ye holy: for I am the LORD your God.
The Brenton LXX says:
Lev_20:7 And ye shall be holy, for I the Lord your God am holy. (Lev_11:44, Lev_19:2)
Thus, Sanctification or Holiness is an element of True Reformation.
As we focus upon the aspect and affect of Sanctification in a Christian life, we move within the bonds of Grace and Faith unto the out reaching of Spirit to flesh. In the predominant lesson taught in the simplicity of the meaning, Sanctification is the Exhibition of holiness in the life of the one offered the Forgiveness of Sin according to the riches of YHWH’s Grace through Faith in the Son of God and in his blood atoning sacrifice, sanctification is the holiness of God exhibited in ones life, which are proofs of Grace received and Faith in action.
Simply the word Sanctification is akin the Holy, holiness, clean, cleanness or purity and purification.
hAg ἅγ or ἅγος / hAgos is the root of both and all related words
Sanctification, Sanctify is commonly translated from
ἁγιάζω / hagi-azo
(G37) – From G40; to make holy, that is, (ceremonially) purify or consecrate; (mentally) to venerate: – hallow, be holy, sanctify.
Holy, holiness is commonly translated from
(G39)- ἅγιον / hagi-on
Neuter of G40; a sacred thing (that is, spot): – holiest (of all), holy place, sanctuary.
Hagos caries with it the idea of cleanness or cleansing as well as hallowed nature when it is applied to a day such as the sabbath in Gen_2:3, a feastival, priestly items, and God’s people’s actions of life.
When speaking of Holiness we are speaking of Sanctification.
Being the people of YHWH GOD is wrapped up in His Holiness or sanctification and it’s identification or unity, it’s ‘oneness’ you might say between God and His people, a people who walk in God’s Holy Ways.
When our Lord Jesus Christ was sent to save His people from their sin he came to redeem those who were under the law, and bound to the curse of the Law which came by a lack of Holiness or Sanctification, not Just in actions and customs of life but in Faith from the heart and mind.
For the Christian, that is the follower of Christ otherwise could be said a walker with Christ, the words of Christ’s great prayer to His Father reviels the Sanctification or holiness of Christ and the Sanctification He offers his followers, as well as the origin of his Sanctification and it’s kinship to Faith and Eternal life:
Joh_17:1 These words spake Jesus, and lifted up his eyes to heaven, and said, Father, the hour is come; glorify thy Son, that thy Son also may glorify thee:
Joh 17:2 As thou hast given him power over all flesh, that he should give eternal life to as many as thou hast given him.
Joh 17:3 And this is life eternal, that they might know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent.
Joh 17:4 I have glorified thee on the earth: I have finished the work which thou gavest me to do.
Joh 17:5 And now, O Father, glorify thou me with thine own self with the glory which I had with thee before the world was.
Joh 17:6 I have manifested thy name unto the men which thou gavest me out of the world: thine they were, and thou gavest them me; and they have kept thy word.
Joh 17:7 Now they have known that all things whatsoever thou hast given me are of thee.
Joh 17:8 For I have given unto them the words which thou gavest me; and they have received them, and have known surely that I came out from thee, and they have believed that thou didst send me.
Joh 17:9 I pray for them: I pray not for the world, but for them which thou hast given me; for they are thine.
Joh 17:10 And all mine are thine, and thine are mine; and I am glorified in them.
Joh 17:11 And now I am no more in the world, but these are in the world, and I come to thee. Holy Father, keep through thine own name those whom thou hast given me, that they may be one, as we are.
Joh 17:12 While I was with them in the world, I kept them in thy name: those that thou gavest me I have kept, and none of them is lost, but the son of perdition; that the scripture might be fulfilled.
Joh 17:13 And now come I to thee; and these things I speak in the world, that they might have my joy fulfilled in themselves.
Joh 17:14 I have given them thy word; and the world hath hated them, because they are not of the world, even as I am not of the world.
Joh 17:15 I pray not that thou shouldest take them out of the world, but that thou shouldest keep them from the evil.
Joh 17:16 They are not of the world, even as I am not of the world.
Joh 17:17 Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth.
Joh 17:18 As thou hast sent me into the world, even so have I also sent them into the world.
Joh 17:19 And for their sakes I sanctify myself, that they also might be sanctified through the truth.
Joh 17:20 Neither pray I for these alone, but for them also which shall believe on me through their word;
Joh 17:21 That they all may be one; as thou, Father, art in me, and I in thee, that they also may be one in us: that the world may believe that thou hast sent me.
This oneness or unity is fully interwoven in the Word, the Word of God which is the truth that sanctifies, Christ proclaims the reason for his Holiness to be for our sake that we might sanctify our selves in like manner.
This sanctification is bound up in the Truth of God’s Word, the person of Jesu the Christ the Son of God in his proclamation in His Law
“…be holy, for I the Lord your God am holy…”.
It is in this forward of sanctification which comes by the Word of God, Peter applies this very Law of Christ to the recipients of the revelation of the Gift through Belief (Grace through Faith) in Christ when he taught thus:
1Pe_1:13 Wherefore gird up the loins of your mind, be sober, and hope to the end for the grace that is to be brought unto you at the revelation of Jesus Christ;
1Pe 1:14 As obedient children, not fashioning yourselves according to the former lusts in your ignorance:
1Pe 1:15 But as he which hath called you is holy, so be ye holy in all manner of conversation;
1Pe 1:16 Because it is written, Be ye holy; for I am holy.
1Pe 1:17 And if ye call on the Father, who without respect of persons judgeth according to every man’s work, pass the time of your sojourning here in fear:
1Pe 1:18 Forasmuch as ye know that ye were not redeemed with corruptible things, as silver and gold, from your vain conversation received by tradition from your fathers;
1Pe 1:19 But with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot:
1Pe 1:20 Who verily was foreordained before the foundation of the world, but was manifest in these last times for you,
1Pe 1:21 Who by him do believe in God, that raised him up from the dead, and gave him glory; that your faith and hope might be in God.
1Pe_1:22 Seeing ye have purified (Hag-nikotes /ηγ-νικο-τες G48 , Holy purification) your souls in obeying the truth through the Spirit unto unfeigned love of the brethren, see that ye love one another with a pure heart fervently:
1Pe 1:23 Being born again, not of corruptible seed, but of incorruptible, by the word of God, which liveth and abideth for ever.
It should be easily seen how this Sanctification, which is the holiness of the walk in God’s Law, the obedience to His will, is both the Truth of the Word which is Christ’s person, as well as the Holiness of YHWH God’s Law in it’s effect on the life of his people.
In a sense, ever aspect of the Salvation or help of YHWH GOD is intertwined so tightly it is hard to distinguish, yet by cord, as it were, we may behold as the light of the scripture reveals the inter workings of this union. When thus far we have spoke of Faith and Grace and now how Sanctification is one of those treads, the most important aspect of this benevolent process is how all of it supports Salvation as it’s end purpose is Everlasting life, yet along the way these threads are able to be seen in the weave of a mighty saving cord used to Sanctify flesh and spirit, body and soul, by a Word of the same dual construct.
Faith is the Truth and trust, the Belief, that is the very Substance of our Hope to have Salvation and help which comes from God, and very pressingly, it has been affirmed that the Word of God is the only object from which Faith may be built up Rom_10:17 So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.
Yet before this revelation is present in our heart and mind by application of the Blood of the New Covenant, the braid is bound between Faith and Grace in the man Jesus Christ and his Faith, thus faithfulness, which He being in his person the Word of God has his Faith to be Grace to us who are under him:
Rom_5:1 Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ:
Rom 5:2 By whom also we have access by faith into this grace wherein we stand, and rejoice in hope of the glory of God.
Justification or Righteousness , Are synonyms, being derived from the Greek word di-kē / δίκη
(G1349: Probably from G1166; right (as self evident), that is, justice (the principle, a decision, or its execution): – judgment, punish, vengeance.)
The prime root indicates the Idea of ‘evident equity’, what is seen to be right or see to be just. And it is only by Faith Alone we have peace with God in this equity and it is through Jesus Christ by whom we access Grace, Again the Faithfulness of YHWH is called Grace towards us, Christ’s Faithfulness is our Grace by which we stand.
In the Hebrew Scriptures the name ‘Jeshurun’ is an epitaph of Israel in an upright standing with God, the Idea of Right standing is distinct in it’s wording but akin in it’s Idea, as discussed concerning the QUM MYUTh in Lev_26:13 I am YHWH your God, … I have broken the bands of your yoke, and made you go upright.
Thus, to get the children of the promise, the children of the Covenant to stand up requires feet of Grace, because we have no ability to stand with out the support of the Gospel found in Jesus Christ, Word made Flesh and His Righteousness.
Once this Grace has caused us to stand Up-Right we are called to Walk in his ways, as His workmanship created unto good works; this reformed child we are called to be differs none from a servant though we through Christ be heirs of all, and as heirs we have hope of glory, this glory is forced to glory in tribulation, the strife of our state as children corrected and reformed turned back to the Word of God and the Righteousness seen in His Law for our life, the application thereof will not always be easy:
Rom_5:3 … but we glory in tribulations also: knowing that tribulation worketh patience;
Rom 5:4 And patience, experience; and experience, hope:
Rom 5:5 And hope maketh not ashamed; because the love of God is shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Ghost / Holy Spirit which is given unto us.
And it is at this point we enter into the subject of the Holy Spirit: That at a point as it is necessary by the Lord, as it calls us to Faith, where we see Grace due to the reality of the horror of our Curse now acknowledged, seeing we are Children of Wrath and captive to Sin’s dominion we are first brought by the Spirit to the Truth of our State, yet it is this Tribulation we rejoice in that causes the cycle of acknowledging the necessity of Grace…the love of God shed abroad into our hearts by the Holy Spirit, the Sanctifying Spirit, the Spirit of Cleanness and Clearing that is Biblical Holiness, that is True Sanctification that allows the reform to continue in our heart to bring about the New Covenant heart full of the love of God’s perfect Law, the full function of the Holy Spirit and His Sanctification is to allow His Children to walk in Love, arisen from the Dead to newness of life in Christ by Grace:
In the lesson of the Grace of YHWH GOD towards His people, the love of GOD is expressed in
Rom_5:6 :
For when we were yet without strength, in due time Christ died for the ungodly.
Rom 5:7 For scarcely for a righteous man will one die: yet peradventure for a good man some would even dare to die.
Rom_5:8 But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.
Rom 5:9 Much more then, being now justified by his blood, we shall be saved from wrath through him.
Rom 5:10 For if, when we were enemies, we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much more, being reconciled, we shall be saved by his life.
In it’s continuation Rom_5:17 For if by one man’s offence death reigned by one; much more they which receive abundance of grace and of the gift of righteousness shall reign in life by one, Jesus Christ.)
This gift called grace, which is the faithfulness of God to keep his promises, it is dispensed while we are yet sinners, for in such a way the offer of redemption is ever prescient or else there exists no hope to turn from our wicked way. So in it’s totality and union we may understand the workings of the Spirit in our life in the three fold aspects of Sanctification as it works towards Holiness:
-
Grace which is nothing we have done but is the faithfulness of YHWH to forgive
-
Faith which is Trust in YHWH’s Salvation heard by the Word of God
-
Sanctification which is a life , spirit and flesh, subservient to God’s Righteousness
ABP trans. Rom_6:19 Humanly I speak, on account of the weakness of your flesh; for as you rendered your members subservient to uncleanness and to lawlessness unto lawlessness; so now render your members subservient to the righteousness unto sanctification!
