More than a Giant Problem (Gen 5-6:3)
1Pe_3:15-16 where we are told But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts: and be ready always to give an answer to every man that asketh you a reason of the hope that is in you with meekness and fear: 16 Having a good conscience; that, whereas they speak evil of you, as of evildoers, they may be ashamed that falsely accuse your good conversation in Christ.
In last week’s review and over view it was discussed what the normative meaning of a ‘Son of God’, as used in Genesis Chapter 6:2 by first reviewing what the text we have read has told us prior and that with the aid of the apostles and disciples who used this same term descriptively only in reference to those who have received the Word of God as the seed which comes by the spirit of God and is thus the will of God, not of the will of the flesh, not of the will of blood or of the will of any man but of God’s will entirely, and this will which comes by the indwelling spirit and Word renews or quickens, makes alive the man who lives not after the fallen flesh of his Adamic fathers which is generated unto death and is willed die entirely, rather a son of God is one which remains so, he is born of God not committing sin; for God’s seed remaineth in him: and he cannot sin, because he is born of God. In this the children of God are manifest, and the children of the devil: whosoever doeth not righteousness is not of God, neither he that loveth not his brother. For this is the message that ye heard from the beginning, that we should love one another. (1Jn_3:1-24)
The Apostle Paul says, A Son of God who has the seed remain in him strengthened by the spirit of God mortifies the deeds of the body unto life. For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God. For ye have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear; but ye have received the Spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba, Father. The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God:(Rom 8:14-16)
You can build off this theme with the entirety of scripture and this is how you know when you have true glimpse of the narrative of scripture, when it is answered time and again and applicable in a way which builds off of scripture prior and works in the system yet to come in a well fitting fashion. This is what you find when you allow this section of the holy writ to be defined by Scripture rather than making assumptions from outside narratives of in ways which ignore the other portions of scripture written by inspired writers filled with the same spirit that accurately preserved these words we now read.
These sons of God or Sons of the God as the Hebrew directly references are at the time this is spoken of them those who like Enoch walked with God which was his witness that he pleased God by Faith in coming to God the rewarder of his diligent seeking, a man who walks with YHWH walks on His Path looking to find him so that that he can get closer, and the path or road of YHWH is to walk in his ways, in his words, it is only there can fallen Adam retrace his steps to before that sad cool of the day, where rather than walking with YHWH Adam hid.
This is necessary to know because it applies to us in our day too, this is why we too walk in the only way, Enter ye in at the strait gate: for wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that leadeth to destruction, and many there be which go in there at: Because strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it.
(Mat 7:13-14) This is the walk leading to that gate, this is that walk that to find it, and this walk is the testimony that is witnessed in Faith proving how diligent we seek after walking with The God, YHWH GOD and to be his child.
Gen_6:1 And it came to pass, when men began to multiply on the face of the earth, and daughters were born unto them,
Gen 6:2 That the sons of God saw the daughters of men that they were fair; and they took them wives of all which they chose.
Gen 6:3 And the LORD said, My spirit shall not always strive with man, for that he also is flesh: yet his days shall be an hundred and twenty years.
So as we had left off YHWH had determined 120 years from this time to destroy the land of Adam, the earth in which this has happened. When these men who where the dominion holders of the earth and especially of the land of their residence near Eden who were call upon the name of YHWH, they were walking with The only God, but this break down of this quickening happened yet again in the likeness it had happened before to Adam man, in the fault of the family structure between husband and wife, the same fault Paul calls being unequally yoked together with unbelievers: for what fellowship hath righteousness with unrighteousness? in 2Co_6:14, and as he even holistically makes the point in the end of this chapter by quoting the law and prophets, saying, be ye separate, saith the Lord …I will receive you, And will be a Father unto you, and ye shall be my sons and daughters… 2Co_6:17-18
But these sons of God did not separate from the un-faithful, rather they made children with them, and we are told that:
Gen_6:4 There were giants (‘the fallen ones ‘ הנפלים/ ‘Eh-NeFLIM’ ) in the earth in those days; and also after that, when the sons of God came in unto the daughters of men, and they bare children to them, the same became mighty men which were of old, men of renown.
And so we have different was to understand ‘Giants’, which in Hebrew refers to ‘ הנפלים/ Eh-NeFLIM’ which literally means ‘the fallen ones’, and so in direct connection with the fall, however there is no consistent language that I know of that connects the words NeFLIM to the aspect of falling of ADaM directly as we speak of it commonly. However there is an important connection to Qain and the fall in this language, that is when we read in Gen_4:6 “And the LORD said unto Cain, Why art thou wroth? and why is thy countenance fallen?..”, the fallen countenance in the word NeFiL and if this offers us any connection to the ‘fall’ as we speak of it I do not know for sure, however it is obvious that these fallen one born are similar to Cain in the next verses, I do not think they are in fact Cain’s literal children or do they have to be to have this disposition, but what is evident is that like Cain they are fallen in a violent way, like Lemech was violent. It is noticeable that of Lemech of Cain he took two wives and is the first mentioned to do so, and as well at the time before the fallen ones ‘sons of God took them wives of all which they chose on account of their fairness. Yet it cannot be confused that Lamech son of Cain has no attribute where he could be recognized as a son of God and his wives a daughter of Adam (no confusion), I am simply making the point that this violent disposition is manifest in a son of Can the man of the fallen countenance to set the stage.
In language the Greek Giganites implies giants, literally tall! and figuratively in regards to a warrior, and I am sure the two usages are shared in concept, Gigenites and NeFLIM are tall in scripture, this interpretation checks out in context entirely, and this similar word is used to reference the bed stand of a giant king of Due_3:11 Og king of Bashan which was nearly 16 feet long (more or less), and there are many such things similar said of ‘NeFLIM’ to correctly identify them as giants, yet the language is also possibly symbolic, in that also the phrase is used to indicate a giant figure, like the use of the word ‘monster’, as in ‘you don’t want to fight him, he’s a monster!’ To this day we still use the term gigantism to refer to giant syndrome, a true condition caused from an over active pituitary gland, yet producing huge persons who die young such as the famous ‘Andre the giant’.
Why were or were giants born of this union of the Sons of God and Daughters of Adam is both were of the same homogeneous union racially? Some say this is hybrid vigor which happened after marriage had corrupted to a point where miscegenation was rampant, or even bestiality of some such as the Ellen G White pondered on, or that it was some form of ancient hybridity through genetic modification, thus corrupting the way of all flesh, threatening the way of propagation? or was it poor marriages of incest where gigantism resulted in Adam from that form of genetic defect or corruption, many suspect and have different theories, I don’t think the text tells us directly what caused giant’s to be born at this time to be men of renown, scripture only mentions that this happened ‘when’ Gen_6:4 There were giants in the earth in those days; and also after that, when the sons of God came in unto the daughters of men, and they bare to them, the same mighty men which were of old, men of renown.
It seem to me that the language of scripture is concrete as to the giants as offspring of the son’s of God and the Daughters of Men and at this point not another kind but a spiritual degradation, nevertheless after that who or what the children of that union procreated with to create this state of wickedness upon the earth, we only know that what we are told, and that is the ‘kinds’ of all flesh needed saved from it. (It is my obvious opinion that after this first generation of degradation had set in, the sexual proclivities of Adam got worse and worse, just consider what has happened in European lands in 100 years for instance, one the hippie movement wrecked it’s havoc and the hybrid element of society was liberated to do as they wished the remnant of Adam started to forget the law of their ancestors, and they quickly were thrust out of the way till we have what we have now, where ways that can’t ever produce offspring ‘thank God’ are practiced and protected by the giants of the earth, and it is all recognized as part and parcel to the same proclivity Adam has toward ‘liberty’.
So let’s continue into the text and see what this break down of the moral fiber of marriage has caused and has lead up to after this initial violation of ‘taking wives of all which they chose’, by the sons of the GOD.
Gen 6:5 And GOD saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every imagination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually.
This confirms a continuation of Adam’s wickedness on to worse things.
Gen 6:6 And it repented the LORD that he had made man on the earth, and it grieved (NecHeM/נחם ) him at his heart.
LXX. Gen 6:6 and God pondered that he made the man upon the earth, and he considered.
If you want a deep passage of Scripture that causes folks to pull their hair out, this is one of them, especially when the languages are not consulted. As the English reader, especially the reader that has been taught to isolate verses of scripture from context, this one seems to indicate in the KJV that YHWH GOD ‘repented’, and that is often equated to human remorse or repentance, as a failed man would do to himself after he had sinned or wished he could have done better. But what is said in this passage in its context, and in its language is telling us of this pondering or grieving, that foremost both languages is of the ‘ενεθυμηθη / speaking of the root ‘thumo or thuo’ referencing the idea of tiresome breathing, and the Hebrew speaks of the ‘ נחם / NecHaM’, which interestingly is the plural of Noah’s name H5146 / נֹחַ both the Greek and Hebrew lead us to the idea of being tiered, and the Son’s of God who had not fallen from calling of YHWH’s name and Walking with him or at least desiring to walk with are found feeling as YHWH does. We saw in the naming of Noah in Gen_5:28-29: And Lamech… called his name Noah, saying, This same shall comfort (נחמנו/NecHaMaNU) us concerning our work and toil of our hands, because of the ground which the LORD hath cursed. Here the English translation, rendered ‘comfort’, the word in Hebrew is rooted in that which causes both ‘repenting’ and ‘comfort’ and that is the ‘rest’ found in Grace amidst destruction, this comes from the breath of YHWH’s mouth, in his authority, in working all things according to the counsel of his own will; YHWH’s people take comfort in that, NoacH, our sin grieves YHWH, our corruption of His breath which spoke out all things by His Word is seen in an illustration as an ‘inhale’, that is the retracting of His breath at this time and leaving behind all that he will have grace on only, His compassion. And, so all the more we are setting the stage for the lesson of Grace.
And thus we read:
Gen 6:7 And the LORD said, I will destroy man whom I have created from the face of the earth; both man, and beast, and the creeping thing, and the fowls of the air; for it repenteth me that I have made them.
Now notice that YHWH has determined death for all flesh, not just Adam man, but beasts, creeping things and birds, all flesh.
I’d like to tie this statement with what YHWH tells Noah before I start speaking at length concerning Noah himself and this situation described next. That is, in adding to Adams wickedness and imaginations of evil for the earth:
Gen 6:11-13, says: The earth also was corrupt before God, and the earth was filled with violence.
Gen_6:12 And God looked upon the earth, and, behold, it was corrupt; for all flesh had corrupted his way upon the earth.
Gen 6:13 And God said unto Noah, The end of all flesh is come before me; for the earth is filled with violence through them; and, behold, I will destroy them with the earth.
This is the description of what the first unequal yoking lead to of the sons of God with that of the daughters of Adam, it lead to the imaginations of Adam proceeding to more and more violence and corruption ( G5351 ), another word to consider the English translation here is the word translated corrupt and destroy ( שׁחית ). Yet it is interesting to notice how Adam is corrupting of destroying the earth and all flesh and this caused YHWH in verses 13 and 17 to declare He will corrupt or destroy / SecHITh(iM) them his way. So what is the difference? Why didn’t YHWH allow Adam and all flesh with them, the earth with them corrupt or become destroyed by their own doings?
It seems as if the answer lies in the corruption which happens to the Just who are looking to find grace, grace and truth which comes to those who received the word and it remains in them, they are the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name: these men were such as were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God, and as those whom the Word of God has always come (Act_7:38; Rom_3:2) and in the days of Noah, it was the son’s of Adam to whom this record of the oracles of God was given. and those son’s of Adam who were given the power to become sons of God after the fall are bound to life in God’s ways including and chiefly concerning marriage. I’ve heard men preaching, and they generally say in a sanctimonious preachers voice “you can’t choose who your parents are”, and that is 100% true, and that is what shows that God has chosen who Noah was, it was not of the will of the flesh or blood, what happens to Noah’s brothers? they die, because they were not son’s of God, it was not of the will of man because Noah’s father could not will to have a just son he could only hope, father Lemech or Adam could not give Noah his Faith, it was not of the will of any other than the will of GOD.
And this grace is in preservation of all flesh and all the earth, but it is on account of Adam’s dominion mandate being preserved according to the Will of God, that is according to God’s perfect way. YHWH’s people walk YaH’s Way, and call of YAH’s name, that is upon the name of the LORD, the rule maker, that is Law giver, the instructor of the way.
And for Adam this was expressly spoken of concerning Adam’s marriages, that first they were to take helpmates according to Gen_2:23-25 bone of my bones, and flesh of my flesh…and Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh; naked and not ashamed.
This is the will of God primarily concerning Adam’s Marriage, bone of my bones, and flesh of my flesh (this is an ethnic genealogical term used throughout the bible), that they first marry one of their own people in this way, and not a stranger, nor of any other living soul, and then they cleave to one to another in a Godly unity, creating in their likeness and image as God made them, naked in all of this and not ashamed of their genitive role as the head and the body, the helped and the helper.
What seemingly was being corrupted by the time of the days of Noah, is that after poor marriages were made between the Son’s of God and the Daughters of Adam according to the flesh, was that marriages or unions were more debased to a point where there was a corruption of not just Adam’s Kind but of all flesh and of the earth.
The corruption or destruction we are still speaking of is in the dominion of men is corruption that still lives, yet in the hand of the LORD GOD it is swift destruction. In Gen_6:12 we see that it is not the flesh itself that is corrupt but the way of all flesh, what is that way? to know this we must ask what YHWH desired to be saved of his creation as shown in:
Gen_6:19 And of every living thing of all flesh, two of every sort shalt thou bring into the ark, to keep them alive with thee; they shall be male and female. (see also Gen_7:15-16)
It is the preservation of YHWH’s creation, beside the seed which remained in Noah by Faith which linked him and his wife and his son’s to Father Adam, it is a preservation of not only the blood, the bone, the flesh of Adam man, but of the Faith he carried in him, the way which together was ending in the corruption and destruction coming from poor marriages the declined into literal way, the door way by which flesh enters the earth, and we see the opposition in Noah’s saving of 2 of all kinds to keep alive, a male and a female, the helped and the helper.
Tob 4:12 Beware of all whoredom, my son, and chiefly take a wife of the seed of thy fathers, and take not a strange woman to wife, which is not of thy father’s tribe: for we are the children of the prophets, Noe, Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob: remember, my son, that our fathers from the beginning, even that they all married wives of their own kindred, and were blessed in their children, and their seed shall inherit the land.
