Pt.5 At the Name of Jesu(s)

“Philippians- An Exposition

This message is the fifth part after the introduction of an expository study of the Epistle of Philippians written by the apostle Paul under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit.

In this study message we will be looking a Philippians 2:5-16 with specific emphasis on verses 7-8, with all of the context we can use to expose the text for what it said prophetically and historically and says to us doctrinally.

We will be seeing a conclusive case from these words Hebrews, Psalms and Isaiah as we consider the dual nature of Christ, His claim of self-creation and His claim of being created by another, wrapping all this us into the Command that will cause all to swear, and every knee to bend at the Name of Jesus Christ.

Philippians

An Exposition

Pt.5 At the Name of Jesu(s)

Hear the word of the LORD written under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit by Paul and Timotheus, the servants of Jesus Christ, to all the saints in Christ Jesus which are at Philippi, with the bishops and deacons:

Php_2:5  Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus:
Php 2:6  Who, being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God:
Php 2:7  But made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men:
Php 2:8  And being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross.
Php 2:9  Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above every name:
Php 2:10  That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth;
Php 2:11  And that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
Php 2:12  Wherefore, my beloved, as ye have always obeyed, not as in my presence only, but now much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling.
Php 2:13  For it is God which worketh in you both to will and to do of his good pleasure.
Php 2:14  Do all things without murmurings and disputings:
Php 2:15  That ye may be blameless and harmless, the sons of God, without rebuke, in the midst of a crooked and perverse nation, among whom ye shine as lights in the world;
Php 2:16  Holding forth the word of life; that I may rejoice in the day of Christ, that I have not run in vain, neither laboured in vain.

We are today going to reconsider last weeks exposition on these verses undoubted and emphatic proclamation of the Equality of Christ Jesus as God, and emphasis some other aspects of this and then move into how this work establishes Christ’s victory in heaven and earth and beyond.

Now it was important for me to draw attention to the “If” statements of the apostle as He said:
If there be any para-klesis / near calling or Comfort IN CHRIST, If thereby any para-muthion / nearness to the mystery / Consolation  of Love, any fellowship of the Spirit, if any bowels / feelings of consolation and mercies / or pity,

and so the fulfilled joy of the apostle is

Php 2:2  …. that ye be likeminded, having the same love, being of one accord, of one mind.

and that resident mind with all of this desires the elimination of strife and vain glory, this calling, mystery

and fellowship of the Spirit with its delivered bowles of consolation merciful pity lowers the high mind,

and esteems the brethren who share in this Comfort in Christ , this Consolation of Love and Fellowship of the Spirit.

And this one mind and lowered mind is the mind we are to have in order to “Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus:”

And so the statements next made concerning the essence and person of Christ Jesus is the mind of Christ.

In other words this is how Jesus thought of himself and this is how we are to think of him and if we do so together we will be of one mind on a very important subject which will produce a mind in us that is similar to that mind which was in Him.

As I stated last week, this is not a gnostic call to deify yourself as a christ , nor to say I will believe of my self as Christ believed of him self, “I also will say “I am equal with God, and yet this is not robbery to God”, and the reason for that is because you as a creature and a man can not claim what Christ Jesus claimed about his will, his nature and therefore his  Godhead, therefore if you were to do so you’d be a blasphemer, a liar and worthy of death. Better to be rid you from society, and  from existence. and yet while it is common sense and common experience to know we are not God many do this advertently and inadvertently.

Paul is not saying, think about yourself as Jesus thought of himself, he is saying, ‘think about Christ Jesus as Jesus thought about himself!’
That is this
‘Christ Jesus knew He was in the form of God, yet, thought it not robbery to be equal with God.’
and here is why:

Php 2:7  He… made himself of no reputation,
He… took upon him the form of a servant,
He… was made in the likeness of men:

Php 2:8  And we find his being… fashioned as a man,
knowing that he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross.

We can not claim the former (that we think of our self as a christs) because of the later (we can’t do what Jesus said here he could do),
we can say ‘we have the mind of Christ‘ but we can never think of ourself as Christ, and until we can provable choose all these things Christ chose for himself, which we will never do, we bow at the thrown of God, at the feet of the LORD Jesus Christ and we bow to God, because He alone has done these things and yet was found in the fashion as a man, He chose to serve us in this way, He chose to take upon Him the not the nature of angels but the seed of Abraham.

Other Scripture which dwells upon this statement

Php_2:7-8 and was made in the likeness of men: And being found in fashion as a man

As these are the parts of the sentence in this statement that are assigned to another, to God, making Christ in this joint work of the Father and the Son (these together show Christ Jesus as having a pre-existence, fortifying this mind of equality with God, these verses show how the God head in Father, Son and Spirit functionally worked together in the ‘making’ of the humanity or Body of Jesus Christ:

Turn with me to:

Heb_2:1  Therefore we ought to give the more earnest heed to the things which we have heard, lest at any time we should let them slip.

Heb 2:6  But one in a certain place testified, saying, What is man, that thou art mindful of him? or the son of man, that thou visitest him?
Heb 2:7  Thou madest him a little lower than the angels; thou crownedst him with glory and honour, and didst set him over the works of thy hands:
Heb 2:8  Thou hast put all things in subjection under his feet. For in that he put all in subjection under him, he left nothing that is not put under him. But now we see not yet all things put under him.
Heb 2:9  But we see Jesus, who was made a little lower than the angels for the suffering of death, crowned with glory and honour; that he by the grace of God should taste death for every man.
Heb 2:10  For it became him, for whom are all things, and by whom are all things, in bringing many sons unto glory, to make the captain of their salvation perfect through sufferings.
Heb 2:11  For both he that sanctifieth and they who are sanctified are all of one: for which cause he is not ashamed to call them brethren,
Heb 2:12  Saying, I will declare thy name unto my brethren, in the midst of the church will I sing praise unto thee.
Heb 2:13  And again, I will put my trust in him. And again, Behold I and the children which God hath given me.
Heb 2:14  Forasmuch then as the children are partakers of flesh and blood, he also himself likewise took part of the same; that through death he might destroy him that had the power of death, that is, the devil;
Heb 2:15  And deliver them who through fear of death were all their lifetime subject to bondage.
Heb 2:16  For verily he took not on him the nature of angels; but he took on him the seed of Abraham.
Heb 2:17  Wherefore in all things it behoved him to be made like unto his brethren, that he might be a merciful and faithful high priest in things pertaining to God, to make reconciliation for the sins of the people.
Heb 2:18  For in that he himself hath suffered being tempted, he is able to succour them that are tempted.

If you do not care about language and sentence structure and the accusative and indicative parts of these statements you will not get it. Your fleshly mind will redefine the deity of Christ and His self creation and his Father’s self glorification thereby as confusing at best and false at worst.

Yet what is foud:
“Wherefore in all things it behoved him to be made like unto his brethren”
The text tells us the best and foremost meaning of Psalm 8 and here in Hebrews, YaH our Lord made Him alittle lower than angels and crowned him with Glory and honor as the son of man / the son of adam.
This is why the text reads in

Psa_8:4  What is man, that thou art mindful of him? and the son of man, that thou visitest him?

( מהH4100 What אנושׁH582 is man, כיH3588 that תזכרנוH2142 thou art mindful ובןH1121 of him? and the son אדםH120 of man, כיH3588 that תפקדנו׃H6485 thou visitest

This is in the Hebrew, what is enos… do you remember the meaning of this name of man who lead that first church after Cain’s murder of Abel? Enos. Do you remember what his name meant while meaning ‘man’, that this form implies Sickness, mortality and frailty, eminent death? This is the state of fallen Adam and his children and brethren.

And yet Christ was made THE son of Adam /man, and took it upon himself in a condescension and creation of the only begotten of the Father- having the form of God and yet he became the form of this servant ‘The” singular “Son of Man”.
This quoted Psalm where our KJV says “visitest” that this is the Hebrew word for numbering and the Greek word bishop or an overseeing by counting.
In other words, THE singular “son of man” has been ‘visitorial numbered by the oversight’ of God of His Father in being made these things.

(Heb_10:7-9 )
Psa_40:6  Sacrifice and offering thou wouldest not; but a body hast thou prepared me: whole-burnt-offering and sacrifice for sin thou didst not require.
Psa 40:7  Then I said, Behold, I come: in the volume of the book it is written concerning me,

And yet as we accept this of Hebrews 2, and we accept the interpretation given by Hebrews revelation to Psalm 8, we just as willingly and acceptingly rejoice in:

Php 2:5-6 Christ Jesus:  Who, being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God:

Php_2:7  Knowing that
He… made himself of no reputation,
He… took upon him the form of a servant,
He… was made in the likeness of men:

Php 2:8  And we find his being fashioned as a man,
knowing that he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross.

So lets continue:

Php_2:9  Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above every name:
Php 2:10  That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth;
Php 2:11  And that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

Turn with me to, and I am going to intentionally emphasize the Hebrew word for LORD or GOD, the Name YHWH, which literally means ‘He Which Is” it expresses omnipresence and eternality and the being of Almightiness.
Now listen, because here is the context and the language Paul is focusing upon when he says “every knee shall bow, every tongue shall confess or swear” :

Isa_45:18  For thus saith YHWH that created the heavens; God himself that formed the earth and made it; he hath established it, he created it not in vain, he formed it to be inhabited: I am YHWH; and there is none else.
Isa 45:19  I have not spoken in secret, in a dark place of the earth: I said not unto the seed of Jacob, Seek ye me in vain: I YHWH speak righteousness, I declare things that are right.
Isa 45:20  Assemble yourselves and come; draw near together, ye that are escaped of the nations: they have no knowledge that set up the wood of their graven image, and pray unto a god that cannot save.
Isa 45:21  Tell ye, and bring them near; yea, let them take counsel together: who hath declared this from ancient time? who hath told it from that time? have not I the LORD? and there is no God else beside me; a just God and a Saviour; there is none beside me.
Isa 45:22  Look unto me, and be ye saved, all the ends of the earth: for I am God, and there is none else.
Isa 45:23  I have sworn by myself, the word is gone out of my mouth in righteousness, and shall not return, That unto me every knee shall bow, every tongue shall swear.
Isa 45:24  Surely, shall one say, in YHWH have I righteousness and strength: even to him shall men come; and all that are incensed against him shall be ashamed.
Isa 45:25  In YHWH shall all the seed of Israel be justified, and shall glory.

In Php_2:10-11 Paul is directly quoting which originally is a first person statement of YHWH

Isa 45:23  I have sworn by myself… That unto me every knee shall bow, every tongue shall swear.
and Paul says
Php 2:10  That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth;
Php 2:11  And that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

and as Paul ends in saying “…Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.”

Isiah records YHWH as saying this:

Isa 45:24  Surely, shall one say, in the LORD / In YHWH have I righteousness and strength: even to him shall men come; and all that are incensed against him shall be ashamed.
Isa 45:25  In the LORD / In YHWH shall all the seed of Israel be justified, and shall glory.

notice:
“every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. “

Php 2:15  That ye may be blameless and harmless, the sons of God, without rebuke, in the midst of a crooked and perverse nation, among whom ye shine as lights in the world;

Rom 14:11  For it is written, As I live, saith the Lord, every knee shall bow to me, and every tongue shall confess to God.
Rom 14:12  So then every one of us shall give account of himself to God.

About JS Lowther

Foremost I know that I am a chief sinner saved by Grace. I am a servant of YHWH Almighty the one true God Who is Father, Son and Spirit. I believe in God's only begotten and perfect Son Jesu(s) Christ whose redemption power of my soul I have Faith in and testify of. Having been redeemed by the blood of Christ, I wish to no longer spend my time in the lusts of the flesh and of this world, but to promote the Gospel of the Kingdom by means of the knowledge of the New Covenant, a reNewal of the Covenant God made with his people Israel in the blood of Christ (Jer 31:31 and Heb 8:8) whereby He writes His Law upon the Heart and Mind beside the forgiveness of sin and transgressions. I believe Christ Jesus is the incarnate Son of God as the WORD made flesh, and the son of man born of the virgin Mary conceived of the Holy Spirit: I believe Christ Jesus Lived a perfect life for us as a living sacrifice as well as a pattern of the Sanctified newness of life a believer has in Him, I believe Christ Jesus died a cursed death on the Cross for His people of Covenant who are sinners, and I believe in Christ Jesus who Resurrected with power from Death from the grave to Justify the offenders. This is the same Jesus who is indeed the Son of David and king of Israel, who is both LORD and Christ over all the kings and dominions of the earth! In the fullness of time YHWH will regather his people under the Head of the Church, Jesu(s) Christ to affect his will according to the Lord's prayer, Psalm 2, 8 and 110 as well as Genesis 1:26. The focus of my administration of the Gospel is like unto my Lord's who said "I have come not but for the lost sheep of the house of Israel.."(Mathew 15:24), and so I have come to my European kinsman according to the flesh. It is my mission to show the Israel of God the Salvation which is taught by Scripture Alone and offered in all ages by Grace Alone through Faith Alone in the work of Christ Alone to the Glory of GOD Alone. As a modern day Puritan separatist it is my goal to purify the church of Christ with Faith heretofore stated. I am studying to show my self approved, if you have any questions just ask!
