Pt. 2
Sanctified by the Spirit
Reading some from ESV on account of the desire to make this subject as simple as possible, today our introductory text to direct our mind for study of the simplicity of the Gospel as it concerns “sanctification by the Spirit” is:
Rom_5:1 Therefore, since we have been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ.
Rom 5:2 Through him we have also obtained access by faith into this grace in which we stand, and we rejoice in hope of the glory of God.
Rom 5:3 Not only that, but we rejoice in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces endurance,
Rom 5:4 and endurance produces character, and character produces hope,
Rom 5:5 and hope does not put us to shame, because God’s love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit who has been given to us.
Notice it is that in this truly faithful and justified person Paul is speaking to “God’s love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit who has been given to us, in all that we have been given as faithful and justified by Faith alone there is a sufficiency or all that we need rejoice in suffering and realize in the Christian life this will produce endurance and endurance (like running) will build your Christian character and that will manufacture or build up your hope. A truly called Christian who is Justified by Faith and knows it irresistibly in his heart will not fall and wallow in sin, but rather will as Pro_24:16 says to him as a Justified man, For seven times the just shall fall and rise up; but the impious or irreverent will weaken in evils: this is the form of endurance the Christian turns into his character in himself and it starts at the defining moment of True saving Faith, we call this definitive Sanctification, that is the instance the LORD makes known to you your need to acknowledge and glorify him and be thankful to him in rejection of the nature you formerly had regardless of how good or bad you think you’ve been.
On the continuance of this suffering and endurance of character unto furthered hope we have what is a progression of Sanctification, and simply in theological terms men have called this progressive Sanctification, this is that continuance of your Faith in the blood of Christ which presses a person to subject his flesh with all of his love poured into his heart by the Holy or Sanctifying Spirit given to him by Grace, a gift of God and this leads the faithful to furthered hope and not shame of his falling and rising up and not shame of resembling his Lord gave himself for him.
Sanctification is a synonym of holiness and holiness is a synonym of purification and purification of cleanness. The origin of sanctification is far reaching into the very nature of YHWH the God of the Bible in that plainly time and again YHWH GOD commands his people to be Holy to be sanctified.
In relationship to the conclusion that man is sinful and un holy and impure before God and that Justification must be enacted by God giving his free gifts to men and not by man’s proud desire of it or pleading or begging for it, or his sinner’s prayer to have it bestowed on him or even his biblical actions and religious conviction such as Baptism but rather all the sufficiency of the ability to be Justified and Glorified is found in God’s election and call to whom he will, a great example of this fact is in the wording concerning Esau who did not truly have the peace and sanctification which saving faith imparts as part of repentance:
Heb_12:11-17 Now no discipline seems joyful but painful rather, but later it yields the peaceful fruit of righteousness to those who have been trained by it.
Heb 12:12 Therefore lift your drooping hands and strengthen your weak knees, And make straight paths for your feet, lest that which is lame be turned out of the way; but let it rather be healed. (14) Follow peace with all men, and holiness (Sanctification), without which no man shall see the Lord: (15) Looking diligently lest any man fail of the grace of God; lest any root of bitterness springing up trouble you, and thereby many be defiled; (16) Lest there be any fornicator, or profane person, as Esau, who for one morsel of meat sold his birthright. (17) For ye know how that afterward, when he would have inherited the blessing, he was rejected: for he found no place of repentance, though he sought it carefully with tears.
Notice concerning the one being strengthened by discipline they pick themselves up and make the path straight, they enjoy the peaceful fruit of righteousness having been trained or exercised that is having endured the sufferings. And the fornicating Esau whose fornication was the marriage of wives of another people whom God had cursed from marriage from his Elect; Esau’s profanity only sought the title and praise of the birthright which he could inherit not able to repent by faith and love of God, this is a Sanctification which first is by truth, of both the call in the life and the call by the Word of God, that is to both be sanctified or made holy by faith before the thrown of God, before anything is done in your body for God.
Our Lord says concerning this Sanctification, holiness and cleansing which the Holy Spirit imparts being of love poured in and upon the heart to those who are Elected to be His that
Joh_17:17 Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth.
Joh 17:18 As thou hast sent me into the world, even so have I also sent them into the world.
This tells us of a simplicity of Sanctification, in the context we would see the Glory of God as a focal point of the Father and of Christ’s work in this sanctification that it is 2 fold
1. by the Truth and
2. by the Word which is truth,
a further speaking of this says
Joh 17:19 And for their sakes I sanctify myself, that they also might be sanctified through the truth.
Joh 17:20 Neither pray I for these alone, but for them also which shall believe on me through their word…
Christ’s Sanctification which was by his and the father’s very own word was Truth and that truth is so pure aand powerful that when others after the apostles believed these words it is able by Faith to Sanctify by Christ’s Sanctification the believer in His Word which is truth, Word which contains Christ’s holy/sanctified life, his death for our offences and his resurrection for our justification immediately when the virtue of that Faith is released by the Power of God. Nothing else is needed for the Elect and Called who are His and not of the World to be immediately Justified by faith in Jesus Righteousness and immediately Sanctified by Jesus Sanctification, rather any other Gospel which tries to subvert this only mechanism of sanctification and righteousness is deficient, that is it is lacking key elements to assure God has bypassed the sins of your flesh past to purify your heart by faith.
To show that this is the defining moment of Sanctification to begin Paul tells us that his ministry and purpose was to
Act_26:18
To open eyes, and to turn from darkness to light, and the power of Satan unto God, that they may receive forgiveness of sins, and inheritance among them which are sanctified by faith that is in me.
And in so doing Paul speaks on the same wise to those he ministers to when he says:
Act_20:32 brethren, I commend you to God, and to the word of his grace, which is able to build you up, and to give you an inheritance among all them which are sanctified.
The power of the truth of the Word of God in the work of rendering one justified and Sanctified is a package deal which begins in Faith of the total work of Jesus.
And so after this defining moment of true sanctification takes place in the justified heart the suffering and exercise begins to train our character to hope and not unto shame in the life we are called to.
But there is no moment or instance one may put his faith in, rather his faith is on the continuance of the spirit sanctifying his life as proof and witness of this reality.
We have been assured that the righteousness of God which is by faith of Jesus Christ unto all and upon all them that believe: for there is no difference: For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God; (Romans 3:22-23)
And we have also been assured of our need to sanctify further by the Word given to us, the word of truth, and Word of Grace all of which comes by the law of God.
We are as well convinced by the love poured into our heart that:
2Ti_3:16-17 All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, (17) that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work.
And this sets us at opposition to the world if we are His elect who are called to glory in him.
This reference to glory of “all…come short of the glory of God” in Romans 3:23)
is referring to the same Glory lost in Rom_1:21 because you, when you knew God, you glorified him not as God, neither were you thankful; but you became vain in your imaginations, and your foolish heart was darkened.
Giving thanks to YHWH for being God in its most basic form as described in Rom 1:21 is the offence which leads to all sin being sin in and of itself, one thereby becomes vain or empty, futile in thinking, and foolish in the heart which will darken. This lead to all manner of sin which one yields their bodies to do, either in the emotions, or thoughts or actions (Heart, mind and strength are committed to one thing or the other, either God or self, righteousness or unrighteousness.
In the Heathen who have abandoned the knowledge of God they posses by creation, the down ward spiral exchanges the glory of God for a lie…the immortal God becomes an image to us resembling mortal man (our selves idol or not) and animals (which is the way man starts to act when immortality is abandoned in thought)….man thinks he is an intelligent animal.
Rom_1:24 -27 So God gave them up to the lusts of their hearts impurity, to the dishonoring of their bodies among themselves, in all sexual debauchery, homosex, and all manner of adultery and fornication…
men, leaving the natural use of the woman, lust toward one another; men with men working out shamefulness, and receiving in themselves a payment which is fitting for this error.
and all of this is for one reason:
Rom_1:28 And since they did not see fit to acknowledge God, God gave them up to a debased mind to do what ought not to be done.
Yielding one’s body as a servant to these animal passions is the bottom of the sin barrel
More work of Not acknowledging God further
Rom_1:29-31 … filled them with all manner of unrighteousness, evil, covetousness, malice.
They are full of envy, murder, strife, deceit, maliciousness. They are gossiping slanderers or whispering backbiters, and now haters of God, insolent, haughty, boastful, inventors of evil, disobedient to parents, foolish, faithless, heartless, ruthless.
Rom 1:32 says, Though they know God’s righteous decree that those who practice such things deserve to die, (and worse beyond all these ) not only do them but give approval to those who practice them.
This of what we read is the absolute opposer of Sanctification, and for this reason it is not only fitting that we start with what the downward spiral of depravity looks like when men yield themselves or give themselves up to acknowledging, glorify and thanking God for being God, but it also shows us plainly what …”those whom he predestined and called, and those whom he called and also justified, and those whom he justified and also glorified.”, should not be in a state of acknowledging the extent of this calling unto final glorification at the end of one’s life where he is found innocent.
Yet Paul does not leave his admonition with those of us who do not practice these unrighteous things which we’ve just read about, but rather Paul condemns the next group who know God’s Law but our proud in their own conceits and blind because of it, this is the trap of the Religious who are Religious or outwardly pious but within and secretly their glory is still no different than the shameful heathen of Romans 1, this is our trap Christians and how wide is the mouth of this pit ready to swallow us up, it is our own mouth which is an open grave, it is our readiness to shed blood of those worse than our selves while we lift not one lip let alone a figure to help the sinner turn from his wickedness, we know the judgment of God upon those who are lawbreakers or sinners, that they will stand before that awesome thrown and be sentenced to eternal death, and yet we Judge the wicked for being wicked rather than glorify God with our acknowledging of God and share God’s kindness, tolerance and patience of our sin…
Rom_2:3 Do you suppose, O man—you who judge those who practice such things and yet do them yourself—that you will escape the judgment of God?
Rom 2:4 Or do you presume on the riches of his kindness and forbearance and patience, not knowing that God’s kindness is meant to lead you to repentance?
Rom 2:5 But because of your hard and impenitent heart you are storing up wrath for yourself on the day of wrath when God’s righteous judgment will be revealed.
Rom 2:6 He will render to each one according to his works:
Rom 2:7 to those who by patience in well-doing seek for glory and honor and immortality, he will give eternal life;
Rom 2:8 but for those who are self-seeking and do not obey the truth, but obey unrighteousness, there will be wrath and fury.
Many people take 2:3 where it says ..”yet do them yourself” and rationalize that this is referring to the debauchery, the homosex and adultery, fornication and say well because I don’t to that I’m able to judge now, but they forget the premise of the whole of Romans 1 which is the exact comparison Paul uses to condemn the outwardly Religious man, that is that we presume we have the riches of his kindness and forbearance and patience, and forget daily, not knowing that God’s kindness is meant to lead us to repentance too?
And here is where Sanctification becomes connected to Justification which we have only by saving Faith, true faith, actualized belief that is a Gift of Grace so irresistible in one’s life they cannot be stopped in progressing in their faith, moving in their life into good works and not evil works, desiring to resemble the Lord Jesus in his perfect life, yielding our members to righteousness because we have been liberated from sin and bought as a servant of Christ our kinsman redeemer, and made a son of the household of God a house hold or Faith in his blood.
Paul says in
Act_20:32 (he) commends… to God and to the word of his grace, which is able to build you up and to give you the inheritance among all those who are sanctified.
The glory of God in our life, the thankfulness to God for being God in our life is the seed bed of Sanctification, that is active holiness, active purification of one’s life, active cleansing of the filthy state brought in by falling short of the glory of GOD and not retaining him in your thoughts thankfully, thanking him for being God, LORD, that is the King, Judge, and Lawgiver who is perfect always judging rightly the thoughts and intents of your heart.
, the retaining in one’s self the war of flesh and spirit as an active fight which in every thought and intention has its side: flesh or spirit, good or evil, right or wrong.
In the depth of the darkness of the heart of all who know God still lie the same seed of selfish pride that without the work of the Holy spirit could germinate and grow into a bitter and nasty growth, and that from the heart as Paul assures us who once ‘knew God’, but because they did not fight for the glorify of him as God or give thanks to him for being God, they became empty in their thinking, and their foolish hearts were darkened’
The Depth of this darkness is gross, but it all seeds and is fertilized from the same shit:
all of these works are easily Identified as unrighteous, or wrong, that which will make one an offender.
And when one says they are Justified by the resurrection of Jesus Christ by Faith in His Blood, that is putting all of the hope they have in there being of standing before the awesome majesty of the Creator of all things and Him looking at your very soul, and it’s only response being pure faith in the blood of Christ’s atonement and NOTHING ELSE!
No other Life is clean enough, no other blood was pure enough, and no other body was glorified enough to mediate and pity all of that sin…Our hope is built on nothing less than Jesus’ blood and his righteousness.
And the true moment of that reality that must continue forever, this is not a ‘when I was saved’ experience, this is a ‘when you realized Christ had saved you before you knew Him experience. Commonly we hear, in that sanctimonious voice , ‘back when I was saved’, truth is you were not even born when that happened .
Rom_5:8 God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.
Rom 5:9 Much more then, being now justified by his blood, we shall be saved from wrath through him.
Rom 5:10 For if, when we were enemies, we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much more, being reconciled, we shall be saved by his life.
