“The New Moon in the Bible”
(2-1-2021 / 6/11/2021)
This is an apologetic help on the subject of why we use the New Moon for our Worship. We as Christians are to always “be ready to give an answer…” and this was a simple informational to help folk have a better answer from Scripture Alone when the time comes to describe our Regulative Worship which utilizes the biblically commanded observance of the New Moons and Sabbath days.

Notes for:
“The New Moon in the Bible”
In the Hebrew the word for New moon and the word for month are virtually the same, the word is cHodesh.
H2320
349 times in the Hebrew Scriptures
The first time the lunar month is referenced is in:
Gen_7:11 In the six hundredth year of Noah’s life, in the second month, the seventeenth day of the month, the same day were all the fountains of the great deep broken up, and the windows of heaven were opened.
By this we know that the month or New Moons were the divisions of the Solar and or agricultural year.
In the KJV
1Sa_20:5; 1Sa_20:18; 1Sa_20:24; 1Sa_20:34; 2Ki_4:23; 1Ch_23:31; 2Ch_2:4; 2Ch_8:13; 2Ch_31:3; Psa_81:3; Ezr_3:5; Neh_10:33; Isa_1:13; Isa_1:14; Isa_66:23; Eze_45:17; Eze_46:1; Eze_46:3; Eze_46:6; Hos_2:11; Amo_8:5; Col_2:16.

Apocraphal
Sir_43:5 Great is the Lord that made it; and at his commandment runneth hastily.
Sir 43:6 He made the moon (selene / σελήνη) also to serve in her season for a declaration of times, and a sign of the world.
Sir 43:7 From the moon is the sign of feasts, a light that decreaseth in her perfection.
Sir 43:8 The month (men / μὴν) is called after her name, increasing wonderfully in her changing, being an instrument of the armies above, shining in the firmament of heaven;
Yet, if the word ‘men’ or month is derived from the idea of another word also ‘men’, and the concepts are derived from each other, than even in the Greek a certain element of truth about the Lunation of the moon is available.
Now in Greek this idea does not hold nearly as it did in the original Hebrew of this apocryphal book when it would us the word Yerach in place of selene and chodesh, whih lit. means renewal or new, to make new.
G3375
μήν
mēn
mane
A stronger form of G3303; a particle of affirmation (only with G2229); assuredly: – + surely.
Why would I say this?
Well the concept of Chodesh is not a possibility of renewal in reference to the moon with YHWH as ordering it, but is assuredly going to happen.
Do you remember Psalm 89 ?
Psa 89:1 Maschil of Ethan the Ezrahite. I will sing of the mercies of the LORD for ever: with my mouth will I make known thy faithfulness to all generations.
Psa 89:2 For I have said, Mercy shall be built up for ever: thy faithfulness shalt thou establish in the very heavens.
Psa 89:3 I have made a covenant with my chosen, I have sworn unto David my servant,
Psa 89:4 Thy seed will I establish for ever, and build up thy throne to all generations. Selah.
Psa 89:5 And the heavens shall praise thy wonders, O LORD: thy faithfulness also in the congregation of the saints.
…
Psa 89:33 Nevertheless my lovingkindness will I not utterly take from him, nor suffer my faithfulness to fail.
Psa 89:34 My covenant will I not break, nor alter the thing that is gone out of my lips.
Psa 89:35 Once have I sworn by my holiness that I will not lie unto David.
Psa 89:36 His seed shall endure for ever, and his throne as the sun before me.
Psa 89:37 It shall be established for ever as the moon, and as a faithful witness in heaven. Selah.
Jdt_8:6; 1Ma_10:34; 1Es_5:52.
Jdt_8:6 And she fasted all the days of her widowhood, save the eves of the sabbaths, and the sabbaths, and the eves of the new moons, and the new moons and the feasts and solemn days of the house of Israel.
Unity of the New Moon with the sabbath in worship
Shew bread to show Sabbath
Exo_40:2;
Lev_24:5 And thou shalt take fine flour, and bake twelve cakes thereof: two tenth deals shall be in one cake.
Lev 24:6 And thou shalt set them in two rows, six on a row, upon the pure table before the LORD.
Lev 24:7 And thou shalt put pure frankincense upon each row, that it may be on the bread for a memorial, even an offering made by fire unto the LORD.
Lev 24:8 Every sabbath he shall set it in order before the LORD continually, being taken from the children of Israel by an everlasting covenant.
The common Christian objection
Col_2:16.
Col 2:13 And you, being dead in your sins and the uncircumcision of your flesh, hath he quickened together with him, having forgiven you all trespasses;
Col 2:14 Blotting out the handwriting of ordinances that was against us, which was contrary to us, and took it out of the way, nailing it to his cross;
Col 2:15 And having spoiled principalities and powers, he made a shew of them openly, triumphing over them in it.
Col 2:16 Let no man therefore judge you in meat, or in drink, or in respect of an holyday, or of the new moon, or of the sabbath days:
Col 2:17 Which are a shadow of things to come; but the body is of Christ.
