“Who Is He That Overcometh the World?“
This message is An Exposition of the Book of 1 John.
In part 10 we will be recovering from chapters 2:13-5:5, This is part of the G section of the Epistle we have been focused upon. The true and earnest belief that Jesus is the Christ and that He is the Son of God according to the message of John the Apostle carries with it an overcoming and victorious package for the Child of God begotten of the will of the Father by His word of Truth, a Word of Life. It is far to often the quickening power of Faith in Christ as it victoriously changes the life of sinners is minimalized in the dispensational world and hated by the anti-Christ world all around us.
In this study of 1 John 5:5 we are going to look through John’s prior statements on overcoming, as well as other biblical logic to help us see what this overcoming Victory of Faith looks like in the life and world the believer lives in with YHWH God.

An Exposition of the Book of 1 John
“Who Is He That Overcometh the World?“
Delivered on 5-15- 2021 / grego. 9-21-2021
Ye Are of God and Have Overcome
Section G of the Epistle of 1 John
pt.10 Who Is He That Overcometh the World? (1 John 5:1-5:5)
1Jn_4:4 Ye are of God, little children, and have overcome them: because greater is he that is in you, than he that is in the world.
1Jn 4:5 They are of the world: therefore speak they of the world, and the world heareth them.
1Jn 4:6 We are of God: he that knoweth God heareth us; he that is not of God heareth not us. Hereby know we the spirit of truth, and the spirit of error.
1Jn 4:7 Beloved, let us love one another: for love is of God; and every one that loveth is born of God, and knoweth God.
1Jn 4:8 He that loveth not knoweth not God; for God is love.
1Jn 4:9 In this was manifested the love of God toward us, because that God sent his only begotten Son into the world, that we might live through him.
1Jn 4:10 Herein is love, not that we loved God, but that he loved us, and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins.
1Jn 4:11 Beloved, if God so loved us, we ought also to love one another.
1Jn 4:12 No man hath seen God at any time. If we love one another, God dwelleth in us, and his love is perfected in us.
1Jn 4:13 Hereby know we that we dwell in him, and he in us, because he hath given us of his Spirit.
1Jn 4:14 And we have seen and do testify that the Father sent the Son to be the Saviour of the world.
1Jn 4:15 Whosoever shall confess that Jesus is the Son of God, God dwelleth in him, and he in God.
1Jn 4:16 And we have known and believed the love that God hath to us. God is love; and he that dwelleth in love dwelleth in God, and God in him.
1Jn 4:17 Herein is our love made perfect, that we may have boldness in the day of judgment: because as he is, so are we in this world.
1Jn 4:18 There is no fear in love; but perfect love casteth out fear: because fear hath torment. He that feareth is not made perfect in love.
1Jn 4:19 We love him, because he first loved us.
1Jn 4:20 If a man say, I love God, and hateth his brother, he is a liar: for he that loveth not his brother whom he hath seen, how can he love God whom he hath not seen?
1Jn 4:21 And this commandment have we from him, That he who loveth God love his brother also.
1Jn 5:1 Whosoever believeth that Jesus is the Christ is born of God: and every one that loveth him that begat loveth him also that is begotten of him.
1Jn 5:2 By this we know that we love the children of God, when we love God, and keep his commandments.
1Jn 5:3 For this is the love of God, that we keep his commandments: and his commandments are not grievous.
1Jn 5:4 For whatsoever is born of God overcometh the world: and this is the victory that overcometh the world, even our faith.
1Jn 5:5 Who is he that overcometh the world, but he that believeth that Jesus is the Son of God?
1Jn 5:6 This is he that came by water and blood, even Jesus Christ; not by water only, but by water and blood. And it is the Spirit that beareth witness, because the Spirit is truth.
1Jn 5:7 For there are three that bear record (in heaven, the Father, the Word, and the Holy Ghost:) and these three are one.
1Jn 5:8 And there are three that bear witness (in earth,) the Spirit, and the water, and the blood: and these three agree in one.
1Jn 5:9 If we receive the witness of men, the witness of God is greater: for this is the witness of God which he hath testified of his Son.
1Jn 5:10 He that believeth on the Son of God hath the witness in himself: he that believeth not God hath made him a liar; because he believeth not the record that God gave of his Son.
1Jn 5:11 And this is the record, that God hath given to us eternal life, and this life is in his Son.
1Jn 5:12 He that hath the Son hath life; and he that hath not the Son of God hath not life.
1Jn 5:13 These things have I written unto you that believe on the name of the Son of God; that ye may know that ye have eternal life, and that ye may believe on the name of the Son of God.
1Jn 5:14 And this is the confidence that we have in him, that, if we ask any thing according to his will, he heareth us:
1Jn 5:15 And if we know that he hear us, whatsoever we ask, we know that we have the petitions that we desired of him.
1Jn 5:16 If any man see his brother sin a sin which is not unto death, he shall ask, and he shall give him life for them that sin not unto death. There is a sin unto death: I do not say that he shall pray for it.
1Jn 5:17 All unrighteousness is sin: and there is a sin not unto death.
1Jn 5:18 We know that whosoever is born of God sinneth not; but he that is begotten of God keepeth himself, and that wicked one toucheth him not.
1Jn 5:19 And we know that we are of God, and the whole world lieth in wickedness.
1Jn 5:20 And we know that the Son of God is come, and hath given us an understanding, that we may know him that is true, and we are in him that is true, even in his Son Jesus Christ. This is the true God, and eternal life.
1 John 5:21 Little children, keep yourselves from idols. Amen.
I think we have now covered sufficiently, 1John 5:1-4 up into one statement, but be are going to look at it yet again in another way:
1Jn_5:4 For whatsoever is born of God overcometh the world: and this is the victory that overcometh the world, even our faith.
1Jn 5:5 Who is he that overcometh the world, but he that believeth that Jesus is the Son of God?
In verse 5:5, it is the 6th time and 5th verse in this epistle the word ‘overcome’ in some sense has been used, the Greek is νικων / nik-a-o:
-
1Jn_2:13 …I write unto you, young men, because ye have overcome the wicked one…
-
1Jn_2:14 … I have written unto you, young men, because ye are strong, and the word of God abideth in you, and ye have overcome the wicked one.
-
1Jn_4:4 Ye are of God, little children, and have overcome them: because greater is he that is in you, than he that is in the world.
-
1Jn_5:4 For whatsoever is born of God overcometh the world: and this is the victory that overcometh the world, even our faith.
-
1Jn_5:5 Who is he that overcometh the world, but he that believeth that Jesus is the Son of God?
And so today I want to do a final analysis on, the overcoming aspect of this statement in 5:5.
And so What I want to point out is how all of the 4 prior overcoming statements are part and parcel to this question of “Who is he that overcometh the world?” as the answer is ” he that believeth that Jesus is the Son of God.
So lets look at those prior overcoming statements:
- 1Jn_2:13 Here, John addresses the young men the warriors of the church as the overcomes of the Wicked one, the word Wicked is the Greek word pon-eh-ron / πονηρον / G4190 and it is an adjective (describing word) it is accusative, meaning the verb the action of overcoming falls upon this word, this is what is being overcome and the word is a singular masculine, meaning this adjective cannot be opened up to mean varied general wickedness, there was a time before Greek grammar came to my attention where I would have done this because the word “one” in the KJV is lacking , but now what I’ve just described is that the word wicked is a singular masculine, what does that mean it means the overcoming here is the same as what is said in 1Jn_3:8 He that committeth sin is of the devil; for the devil sinneth from the beginning. For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that he might destroy the works of the devil.
Here is the point Sin which is law breaking is of the Devil, the Son of God was manifest to destroy or overcome law breaking, and thesE are wicked works, therefore the wicked one is the devil, and the warriors of faith are reminded they are overcomes then of the devil who is the wicked one, and that those who sin, transgress God’s law willfully they are engaged in the works of the devil and this is wickedness. Therefore to overcome the wicked one is to overcome sin.
So he that believeth that Jesus is the Son of God is a warrior overcoming the wicked one and his deeds… sin
2.1Jn_2:14 , we have the encouragement of this first overcoming
… I have written unto you, young men, because ye are strong, and the word of God abideth in you, and ye have overcome the wicked one.
So now the origin and reason for the strength of being able to overcome is stated “the word of God abideth in you” .
So the strength of the overcomer, that is He that believeth the Jesus is the Son of God is “the word of God that abideth in the believer of Jesus”, the Word of God, the Scripture, the covenants of God and his promises, his commandments and his Laws with in and upon the heart and mind of a Young man of God is his Strength of overcoming, this is how the wicked one is overcome.
3. 1Jn_4:4 Ye are of God, little children, and have overcome them: because greater is he that is in you, than he that is in the world.
Here is the prior overcoming expressed, the Wicked one is overcome, he is overcome by the abidance or stable position of the Word of god in the warrior as his strength, and the abidance of the word of God that is the strength of overcome the wicked one, is the greatness of the Word of God which has been since ‘the beginning’, this is the person of the Son, Jesus Christ, it is his person as the Word which abides in you as your strength.
The Word of God is the Logos, the logic or active relational of the Essence of the Word of God. This that reasoning that is meant by the spoken or written word, this is the logic and judicial essence of God. And god gives of His Word to us by his Spirit bringing us Love and Faith of his Word to give us an overcoming package as overcomers. therefore:
4. 1Jn_5:4 whatsoever is born of God overcometh the world: and this is the victory that overcometh the world, even our faith.
While we see that the wicked one is destroyed by the young man, the warrior, and that the strength of the warrior is the Word of God abiding in them which is the greatest force within and without of the world (heaven and earth), it said here that this young man that overcomes the world is born of God, he is a child of God, he is brother to Christ, and is a brother to the name of the Eternal God, and while the overcoming part of the battle is fought in the bosom of the child of God and the word of God has over come and planted His banner as the Word of God in the heart and mind and soul of the little child, become a young man over the wicked one, the one born of God is reminded that the final victory that has overcome, is overcoming in our present life and will overcome in the future is our Faith.
This is not saying your personal faith is the victory, no, no, no! This is saying we have Faith in what has been done by God. What has God done in this statement? He has begotten an overcomer, that is what he has done, and he has done so in all the ways prior expressed and it is all part and parcel to the one who is the little child of God grown to be a warrior of Faith.
Remember that
1Jn 5:1 Whosoever believeth that Jesus is the Christ is born of God: and every one that loveth the Father that begat loveth him also who is the Son that is begotten of him.
1Jn 5:2 By this we know that we love the children of God, when we love God, and keep his commandments.
And so here is the victory that the believers as children of God together have faith in, they know it was not them that first loved God to make them children of God and brother of Christ to be redeemed by his blood, rather they know God first loved them and came to them and saved them while they were yet sinners, this is the Faith we have, and this is only hope of victory over this world of lust and pride and death, it is that we are convinced and persuaded of YHWH God sitting in the Heavens upon his holy hill of Zion and laughing in victory over all those who will not have him rule by his Word in this world, first from their own heart and second to every place under heaven.
And so to our final overcoming point:
5. 1Jn_5:5 Who is he that overcometh the world? He that believeth that Jesus is the Son of God…
This is the summary of it all,
-
the overcoming of the Wicked one,
-
the streangth of the warior from the abiding Word of God with in
3.the greatness of the one who spoke that abiding Word and who is that abiding Word YHWH
-
whatsoever is born of God is born to overcome, and have victory over the world, we have faith in this faithful truth
Let me read the Apostle James Words on this very act of begetting us as it also interacts with the love of God being made perfect with the abidance of the Word and Will of God and establishes victor through Christ and his faithfulness through him:
Jas_1:17 Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning.
Jas 1:18 Of his own will begat he us with the word of truth, that we should be a kind of firstfruits of his creatures.
When one is begotten of God the Father, a perfect gift comes down from Him who is light and has no darkness in him at all, he is faithful and stable, and it is a gift from his own will that he generates us by, and he dose so by use of His Word of truth, the hearing of the Word of God implants in us and causes us to be a creature of his causation, a kind of fist fruit.
All this victory in our life starts with hearing the word of God and being faithfully comited to the Eternal nature of Jesus Christ, He as the Eternal Word.
And so let me elaborate this a bit, our stand point of Christ’s eternal nature, as it is more inclusive than the way many other Christians speak of it and lightly rationalize it’s doctrine. Especially among the non-covenant theologists, the dispensationalists.
a. Belief in Christ is the belief that the world has been since the beginning created by Jesus Christ ,
b. it is the belief that through out all the ages of the world he has been overcoming the world,
c. and that in the future he will with those he has redeemed from among men will overcome the World.
This has been the victory of every believer since they first understood Genesis 3:15 that the seed of a virign woman would crush sin’s head, by bruising his own heel. A typification of the cross
Christ has been the focus of the report of Isaiah when he said:
Isa 53:11 The father… shall see of the travail of Christ’s soul, and shall be satisfied: by Christ’s knowledge shall my righteous servant justify many; for he shall bear their iniquities.
Isa 53:12 Therefore will I divide him a portion with the great, and he shall divide the spoil with the strong; because he hath poured out his soul unto death…
This is the hope of every generation in Christ, that Jesus was the one to come, and He is how YHWH willed to swallow up death in victory according to Isa 25:8 as spoken of by Paul 1Co 15:54:
The greatness of the overcoming nature of Faith is still overcoming today, the power of the word of God is still planting His banner in heart and minds and still
pulling down of strong holds; Casting down imaginations (idols), and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ 2Co_10:4-5
Here is where faith is tested as victory as our stronghold, in our own imaginations, here is where we ask if Faith that is victorious is our high thing, it is found in the abiding Word of God (Our Strength) which brings us captive to Christ, that is we are happily bound with the Psalm 2 Cords and chains as we rejoice to Kiss the Son who reigns, and our blessing is our trust in him.
To believe truly in heart, mind and soul that Jesus Christ is the Son of God (YHWH Almighty) entails, His fellowship with the Father as the Eternal Son since the beginning,
His person as the Word of YHWH spoken as the force of Creation in creating all things,
His person as the Word of Life, the life always with the Father spoken to every Adam ever made,
and that He was and is the promise made to Abraham, the word which came in a vision in Gen_15:1 who was and is Abraham’s shield and exceedingly great reward,
And to know Christ was and is the Law in the Law of Moses.
To be of the faithful Children of God is to believe this about Jesus, that he is Christ, the Christ of Psalm chapter 2, this is to be an overcomer of the world, to stand for Him, He who sits in the heavens and laughs at the nations of people and heathens who are attempting to break the bands of their maker, and the maker of the world.
The World to be overcome is not focused on “That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we have looked upon, and our hands have handled, of the Word of life..the life manifested, … that eternal life, which was with the Father, and was manifested unto us”
But, This is our gaze, it is locked upon YHWH and his Christ seated in the Heavens since eternity.
The World’s gaze is upon the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, it is not upon the Father.
And so the simplicity of the question of 1Jn 5:5 “Who is he that overcometh the world?”
Is simple form of words that carries with it an immense package of overcoming power in faith, and faith’s inherent victory.
He that believeth that Jesus is the Son of God!
And so let you mind drift back to some of what we discussed of how overcoming faith becomes united and inseparable to the love of God and the love of brother, it is perfected in the keeping of the word and commandments of God towards God and also towards your fellow brother.
The Word of God, which is the Word of Life- Jesus Christ, the one who spoke every command of every law to Moses taught the perfection of the Love of God in the first 5 books of the bible in the Pentateuch.
In the Law of Moses, as we call it is the pattern for Life as taught by Jesus Christ as he Person of the Word of God. Rom_5:14 tells “death reigned from Adam to Moses”, therefore in the life of Moses and in his ministry something about death’s reign was stopped, halted or checked, in the days of Moses as God spoke to him by the Word of life God dealt a death blow to sin.
That which was lost in fall, from Adam till Moses was ‘carved in stone and penned in ink’ from that time forward for us to meditate upon as the inspiration of God, profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness:
2Ti 3:17 That the men and women of God may be perfect, throughly furnished unto all good works.
Perfect? didn’t we hear language like this?
1Jn 2:3 And hereby we do know that we know him, if we keep his commandments.
1Jn 2:4 He that saith, I know him, and keepeth not his commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him.
1Jn 2:5 But whoso keepeth his word, in him verily is the love of God perfected: hereby know we that we are in him.
1Jn 2:6 He that saith he abideth in him ought himself also so to walk, even as he walked.
The Apostle Paul did not say in vain Rom_6:23 the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.
He said it thus as John said
1Jn 3:14 We know that we have passed from death unto life, because we love the brethren. He that loveth not his brother abideth in death.
One who truly has faith in the Son, and believes Jesus is the Christ will turn to the witness of the Word of God as a pattern for life, how to abide in God, the one who loves God will turn to God’s Word to flee from death, and he will live like Jesus Christ by the Word of God, the one who God has loved and has manifested himself to will love God and his brother, and this one who is a truly faithful believer in Jesus Christ and his eternal life, and his power over death will have victory by faith over the world through Faith in the Word of God, the commandments and Law of God.
1Jn 5:5 Who is he that overcometh the world, but he that believeth that Jesus is the Son of God?
Death is limited in its power in this world of covetous lust and pride by the will & Word of the Father, the Word of God is Spirit, and It is the spirit that quickeneth; the flesh profiteth nothing: the words that I speak unto you, they are spirit, and they are life. Joh_6:63
This is not just in the message of Eternal life unto Salvation, but this is the fact in the message of life from the dead as we live in this world:
1Jn 4:17 Herein is our love made perfect, that we may have boldness in the day of judgment: because as he is, so are we in this world.
So very simply, let me ask again from 1Jn_5:5 Who is he that overcometh the world?
He that believeth that Jesus is the Son of God!
