 Pt.3 The Garnish of Sanctification

(A Table of Grace)

In this message we will bring forth the nourishment and enjoyable food of the Christian life, the garnish of Sanctification, and place it upon the table of Grace for our consumption by Faith. We will start by showing the nature of Sanctification and its meaning, we will then consider how the work of Grace through Faith declaring ‘Just’ a sinner carries with it both a definitive sanctification and an ability to progress in Sanctification according to the will and to the Glory of God.

Pt.3 The Garnish of Sanctification

(A Table of Grace)

Job_34:3  For the ear trieth words, as the mouth tasteth meat.

Heb_5:11  (Christ) Of whom we have many things to say, and hard to be uttered, seeing ye are dull of hearing.
Heb 5:12  For when for the time ye ought to be teachers, ye have need that one teach you again which be the first principles of the oracles of God; and are become such as have need of milk, and not of strong meat.

Heb 5:13  For every one that useth milk is unskilful in the word of righteousness: for he is a babe.

Heb 5:14  But strong meat belongeth to them that are of full age, even those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil.

Heb 6:1  Therefore leaving the principles of the doctrine of Christ, let us go on unto perfection; not laying again the foundation of repentance from dead works, and of faith toward God,

Heb 6:2  Of the doctrine of baptisms, and of laying on of hands, and of resurrection of the dead, and of eternal judgment.

Heb 6:3  And this will we do, if God permit.

Heb 6:4  For it is impossible for those who were once enlightened, and have tasted of the heavenly gift, and were made partakers of the Holy Ghost,

Heb 6:5  And have tasted the good word of God, and the powers of the world to come,

Heb 6:6  If they shall fall away, to renew them again unto repentance; seeing they crucify to themselves the Son of God afresh, and put him to an open shame.

I have like wise corresponded the concepts of

1Pe_2:1  Wherefore laying aside all malice, and all guile, and hypocrisies, and envies, and all evil speakings,
1Pe 2:2  As newborn babes, desire the sincere milk of the word, that ye may grow thereby:
1Pe 2:3  If so be ye have tasted that the Lord is gracious.

Importantly and in correspondence to what Hebrews tells us of how the first principles of the oracles of God are Milk, and if you see what Peter says, He says, “laying aside all malice, and all guile, and hypocrisies, and envies, and all evil speakings, ”

and this is what is done in connection to us being ‘As newborn babes’ who now desire the sincere milk of the word, that we may grow thereby” this is that we desire the “first principles of the oracles of God”, and this statement is ended with a like statement to Hebrews 6 in saying
1Pe 2:3  If so be ye have tasted that the Lord is gracious.

The point is this, while God gives us all those things we’ve elaborated, illustrated and made analogy of by Grace, the free gift of God to dead sinners, those children of wrath born to the enemy race of Adam and Israel, those who were made to be the Children of God, but who had rebelled against their God, while we are in the rebel, alien, partitioned and peaceless state, God sent His son to save some from the wrath of His anger which burns to this day against the rebels and slaughters men, women and children in every generation- there for it is by Grace-the free gift- we are saved and not of our selves. And the Bible has told us that If we have Tasted the Graciousness of YHWH, then we will dine further at His table with him.
And it is in this way we can affirm and say:

Heb 6:4 …it is impossible for those who were once enlightened, and have tasted of the heavenly gift, and were made partakers of the Holy Ghost, And have tasted the good word of God, and the powers of the world to come,
If they shall fall away, to renew them again unto repentance; seeing they crucify to themselves the Son of God afresh, and put him to an open shame.

In this context we are dealing with one who has been given access by God’s Grace to sit at his table and taste of His graciousness.

And so, it is in this state we are spiritually sanctified, this is our definitive sanctification.
Today I hope to garnish the meal of Grace hitherto described with sanctification:
Sanctification is Holiness, the two are translated from the same Greek word: hAgion, and Hebrew word: QuaDesh

Sanctification and holiness are to cleanse or purify and thereby to separate or set apart, to appoint to a sacred or religious use.
The concept of Sanctification is entirely wrapped up in the initial cleansing received by a sinner from the blood of Jesus when Christ died.
And so let me go back to this illustration from last week and show how before you were allowed to sit in heavenly places in Christ, at the table of Grace, you would need cleaned up, sanctified, purified or cleansed.

In other words, remember this, remember the illustration, we were Children of wrath slated with our fathers and mothers to die in the battle with our race who rebelled against God’s justice, against God’s Law, His Covenant and His love, and God sent Christ into the world in the likeness of sinful flesh like ours to endure the battle, to gather up enemy babies into a heap as it were, and to throw himself as a covering or an atonement over our infant bodies. We will say for 3 days. For 3 days Christ took upon him the pain for the iniquity of us all, and in this way by him taking the bruising and punishment sent out into the battle for the enemies of God, Christ like an enemy is wounded, smitten bruised and chastised by the same wrath of God which was slated for us as he saves and protects the souls of ever child he chose to save.

And it is of this heap of babies-parched and dry, starving and filthy, dying as it were that God through Christ by the work of the Holy Spirit bleeds upon us. The blood of Christ is transmuted in an eternal or everlasting spiritual way by an eternal covenant cleanse us from the sin guilt we carry before Christ presents us in the throne room of God to be declared righteous or justified and then seated at the table to partake of the table of Grace more than we have in the infantile way.

Here is the first major point of the is lesson:

The Word of God, Jesus Christ as God’s Word pronouncing the blood of the everlasting and eternal covenant, utters His own spiritual and eternal promise:
In His Word He Sanctifies, makes holy, purifies and cleanses from all unrighteousness.

The blood is a cleansing object, the blood of Jesus truly has cleaning power in a spiritual way, an eternal way, because of the efficacy of the promise it has power in all ages to clean from sin- This Power defines one as Holy before God in order to stand before the throne of Judgment in heavenly place and be declared ‘Justified’. Both Justification and definitive spiritual sanctification have their source in the promise and shed blood of Christ.

Heb_9:22  And almost all things are by the law purged with blood; and without shedding of blood is no remission.
Heb 9:23  It was therefore necessary that the patterns of things in the heavens should be purified with these; but the heavenly things themselves with better sacrifices than these.

Definitive sanctification as when one is declared Holy or set apart for God’s righteous use.
That is what is happening here, God sanctifies us by the promised blood of Jesus since before the foundation of the world to be holy, his blood affects it though before the foundation of the world it is yet to faithfully happen in time and history by promise, both in Adam and Abraham and Moses and David and in Paul’s life and in our life, holiness by that eternal blood has sanctifying properties and truly sanctifies .

Go to:
Heb_13:20  Now the God of peace, that brought again from the dead our Lord Jesus, that great shepherd of the sheep, through the blood of the everlasting covenant,
Heb 13:21  Make you perfect in every good work to do his will, working in you that which is wellpleasing in his sight, through Jesus Christ; to whom be glory for ever and ever. Amen.

So let me show you definitive sanctification in Ephesians 1, where such holiness is spoken of plainly and where we have specific reference to the patters of heavenly things.

There are at least 2 places or times that God’s word says a soul is marked with holiness outside of the power of man’s work,

  1. At the declaration of Grace before the world was
  2.  At the giving of Faith in ones life

Therefore, this holiness is bestowed upon every believer by God’s power, these are  spiritual blessings in heavenly places”.

In this way we can say, an acceptable amount of Holiness is exercised by the Holy Spirit of God to set apart a soul as a saint in the life they will live in Christ.

Eph_1:3  Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who hath blessed us with all spiritual blessings in heavenly places in Christ:
Eph 1:4  According as he hath chosen us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before him in love:

Look at this “before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before him in love”
Here is the first sanctification of a soul elected to be saved in that battle.
So, the very choice of Christ is coordinated with the Father’s blessing and choice.

Eph 1:5  Having predestinated us unto the adoption of children by Jesus Christ to himself, according to the good pleasure of his will,
Eph 1:6  To the praise of the glory of his grace, wherein he hath made us accepted in the beloved.
Eph 1:7  In whom we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of his grace;
Eph 1:8  Wherein he hath abounded toward us in all wisdom and prudence;
Eph 1:9  Having made known unto us the mystery of his will, according to his good pleasure which he hath purposed in himself:
Eph 1:10  That in the dispensation of the fulness of times he might gather together in one all things in Christ, both which are in heaven, and which are on earth; even in him:
Eph 1:11  In whom also we have obtained an inheritance, being predestinated according to the purpose of him who worketh all things after the counsel of his own will:

In this way we see what has happened to our soul throughout the mystery of the ages, even before our birth, when our seed and life was saved from the battle by this predestined adoption which we have but will experience in the fulness of time in our life.

Eph 1:12  That we should be to the praise of his glory, who first trusted in Christ.
Eph 1:13  In whom ye also trusted, after that ye heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation: in whom also after that ye believed, ye were sealed with that holy Spirit of promise,
Eph 1:14  Which is the earnest of our inheritance until the redemption of the purchased possession, unto the praise of his glory.

And so here we see the effect of the holiness predestined and our saving at calvary by Christ’s salvation work, that when we ‘Believe’ or are given Faith, having the breast of faith drained into our spiritually dead mouth, we receive a seal from the Holy Spirit of promise.

This is at the time of our Faith given us as a free gift to consume the Grace of God and be nourished by it.                                                                           THIS IS A WORK O GOD

It is true that Christ washes us off from the battle with his blood, but it is also true that the holy spirit through out stages in our life, is reveling himself in us, as that mark is there from God’s predestined choice, He both breathing into us and pouring into us his holiness about the time we justified by the throne of God’s Judgment.

the blood of the everlasting covenant,
Heb_13:21  Make you perfect in every good work to do his will, working in you that which is well pleasing in his sight, through Jesus Christ; to whom be glory for ever and ever. Amen.

It is in this state we are given power to taste the sincere milk and see, we are given power to eat strong meat which belonged to them that are of full age, even those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil.

Do you see the pattern?
The work of the blood to sanctify and justify is to…
“Make perfect in every good work to do his will, working in you that which is well pleasing in his sight, through Jesus Christ; to whom be glory for ever and ever…
To have use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil.

Those first principles of Grace though Faith to us as milk, and we when raised up with Christ from the sense of that battle are seated with him in heavenly places and given the taste of the sincere milk of the word as we come to life, we are quickened by the first movement of the Holy spirit reviving our shallow breathing, and the hand of our saviors begins to spiritually wash off the blood and filth of battle from our flesh if we were.

Once this sincere or true milk is tasted and does the true sincere spiritual work, and this true sincere Holy Spirit is given, there is no more going back to the rebel state, nor can we any longer live in those things which grieves God’s holy spirit and the Saviour Jesus Christ who saved us.

And because we have the mark of holiness, we receive the Holy Spirit of adoption:

Gal_4:6  And because ye are sons, God hath sent forth the Spirit of his Son into your hearts, crying, Abba, Father.

Therefore, we can say assuredly that this spiritual Gift from the Holy Spirit is understanding, it is not to be overlooked in Christian terminology that the Holy Spirit is the Spirit of Holiness or Sanctification, Purity and cleansing. He as this person of the God head does this work:

1Co 12:3  Wherefore I give you to understand, that no man speaking by the Spirit of God calleth Jesus accursed: and that no man can say that Jesus is the Lord, but by the Holy Ghost/ Spirit.

And here is the confirmed purpose of spiritual definitive sanctification, the force working upon us from outside of us cleaning our heart and mind to receive the holiness of God’s Word by Good works before prepared in His word.

But here is the progression we are called to
1Th 4:7  For God hath not called us unto uncleanness, but unto holiness.
1Th 4:8  He therefore that despiseth, despiseth not man, but God, who hath also given unto us his holy Spirit.

And in this understanding that Jesus Christ is Lord our curse is seen to be lifted it such profession is true and of spiritual understanding.

It is at this point God grants us by His will a place to walk in this holiness that comes from Him spirit as we identify with the Word of God and exercise discernment in good and evil, which knowledge comes from God’s Law and Word alone.

It is only in this state can our heart mind and soul say:

The New Man ReNewed by the Holy Spirit and how he tastes the Word and Law of God

Psa_119:103; How sweet are thy words unto my taste! yea, sweeter than honey to my mouth!

Job_23:12 ….I have esteemed the words of his mouth more than my necessary food.

Psa_19:10  More to be desired are they than gold, yea, than much fine gold: sweeter also than honey and the honeycomb.

Eph_4:17  This I say therefore, and testify in the Lord, that ye henceforth walk not as other Gentiles walk, in the vanity of their mind,
Eph 4:18  Having the understanding darkened, being alienated from the life of God through the ignorance that is in them, because of the blindness of their heart:
Eph 4:19  Who being past feeling have given themselves over unto lasciviousness, to work all uncleanness with greediness.
Eph 4:20  But ye have not so learned Christ;
Eph 4:21  If so be that ye have heard him, and have been taught by him, as the truth is in Jesus:
Eph 4:22  That ye put off concerning the former conversation the old man, which is corrupt according to the deceitful lusts;
Eph 4:23  And be renewed in the spirit of your mind;
Eph 4:24  And that ye put on the new man, which after God is created in righteousness and true holiness.
Eph 4:25  Wherefore putting away lying, speak every man truth with his neighbour: for we are members one of another.
Eph 4:26  Be ye angry, and sin not: let not the sun go down upon your wrath:
Eph 4:27  Neither give place to the devil.
Eph 4:28  Let him that stole steal no more: but rather let him labour, working with his hands the thing which is good, that he may have to give to him that needeth.
Eph 4:29  Let no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth, but that which is good to the use of edifying, that it may minister grace unto the hearers.
Eph 4:30  And grieve not the holy Spirit of God, whereby ye are sealed unto the day of redemption.
Eph 4:31  Let all bitterness, and wrath, and anger, and clamour, and evil speaking, be put away from you, with all malice:
Eph 4:32  And be ye kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God for Christ’s sake hath forgiven you.

What is being encouraged here ?

Eph_4:21  If so be that ye have heard him, and have been taught by him, as the truth is in Jesus:
we’ll put off concerning the former conversation the old man, which is corrupt according to the deceitful lusts;
be renewed in the spirit of your mind;
put on the new man, which after God is created in righteousness and true holiness.
and putt away all those non-holi and evil ways of life:

Let us see how the Christian life is instructed in righteousness and true holiness or sanctification:

psa 19:11  Moreover by them is thy servant warned: and in keeping of them there is great reward.
Psa 19:12  Who can understand his errors? cleanse thou me from secret faults.
Psa 19:13  Keep back thy servant also from presumptuous sins; let them not have dominion over me: then shall I be upright, and I shall be innocent from the great transgression.

What is it? What can do these things to a man ?

Psa_19:7  The law of the LORD is perfect, converting the soul: the testimony of the LORD is sure, making wise the simple.
Psa 19:8  The statutes of the LORD are right, rejoicing the heart: the commandment of the LORD is pure, enlightening the eyes.
Psa 19:9  The fear of the LORD is clean, enduring for ever: the judgments of the LORD are true and righteous altogether.
Psa_19:10  More to be desired are they than gold, yea, than much fine gold: sweeter also than honey and the honeycomb.

And so back we are to the taste now of the Law, the testimonies, the statutes, the commandments, and even the fear and judgments of God.
Sanctification or holiness, living like a saint, the set apart life has everything to do with walking not like other gentiles’ other people but like Israel was told to walk, as a matter of fact that 2nd war that was waged where in Israel’s children made to be children of wrath:

without (the knowledge of) Christ,
being aliens from the commonwealth of Israel,
and strangers from the covenants of promise,
having no hope,
without God
——–
far off
no peace with God
wall of partition between us
enemy of God – enmity, by the law of commandments contained in ordinances.

And so, the reversal in the renewed and newness of life is:

Lev_19:2  Speak unto all the congregation of the children of Israel, and say unto them, Ye shall be holy: for I the LORD your God am holy.

Lev 20:7  Sanctify yourselves therefore, and be ye holy: for I am the LORD your God.
Lev_20:8  And ye shall keep my statutes, and do them: I am the LORD which sanctify you.

1Pe 1:14  As obedient children, not fashioning yourselves according to the former lusts in your ignorance:
1Pe 1:15  But as he which hath called you is holy, so be ye holy in all manner of conversation;
1Pe 1:16  Because it is written, Be ye holy; for I am holy.
1Pe 1:17  And if ye call on the Father, who without respect of persons judgeth according to every man’s work, pass the time of your sojourning here in fear:

God judges according to every man’s work, pass the time of your sojourning here in fear:
Often time you will hear people who think that though they see the path of holiness shown them to their eyes by God’s word, that because of past generations who have traditionally dismissed such works of holiness as contained in God’s word they will be guiltless for their willful violation of their own conscience, but is that what it says? No

God judges according to every man’s work, pass the time of your sojourning here in fear:
This is a call to exercise holiness according to God’s law as you fear God and remember the fear of the LORD is Clean.
For remember that:

1Th_4:7  …God hath not called us unto uncleanness, but unto holiness.

Consider

1Th_5:23  And the very God of peace sanctify you wholly; and I pray God your whole spirit and soul and body be preserved blameless unto the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.

So let me connect a few simple works of holiness which we can progress into as we exercise and discern good and evil as to set a simple principle.

Lev_19:2  Speak unto all the congregation of the children of Israel, and say unto them, Ye shall be holy: for I the LORD your God am holy.
Lev 19:3  Ye shall fear every man his mother, and his father, and keep my sabbaths: I am the LORD your God.
Lev 19:4  Turn ye not unto idols, nor make to yourselves molten gods: I am the LORD your God.

I’m going to leave the study on this point for you to consider in combating the gnostic concepts present today in championing a spirit only holiness by an unpracticed faith that exists only in the mind. In these verse in the context of Peter’s quote there are 2 life applications 1 the Honor of one’s parents and the keeping of the sabbath days in worship. Both aspects are of spiritual renewal lived out in one’s life that has been changed by God’s Holy Spirit, and it is by this simple to see principle we know that God intends for our holiness and sanctification to reflect His Holiness and Sanctification in the life which we live in our sojourning here on earth.

About JS Lowther

Foremost I know that I am a chief sinner saved by Grace. I am a servant of YHWH Almighty the one true God Who is Father, Son and Spirit. I believe in God's only begotten and perfect Son Jesu(s) Christ whose redemption power of my soul I have Faith in and testify of. Having been redeemed by the blood of Christ, I wish to no longer spend my time in the lusts of the flesh and of this world, but to promote the Gospel of the Kingdom by means of the knowledge of the New Covenant, a reNewal of the Covenant God made with his people Israel in the blood of Christ (Jer 31:31 and Heb 8:8) whereby He writes His Law upon the Heart and Mind beside the forgiveness of sin and transgressions. I believe Christ Jesus is the incarnate Son of God as the WORD made flesh, and the son of man born of the virgin Mary conceived of the Holy Spirit: I believe Christ Jesus Lived a perfect life for us as a living sacrifice as well as a pattern of the Sanctified newness of life a believer has in Him, I believe Christ Jesus died a cursed death on the Cross for His people of Covenant who are sinners, and I believe in Christ Jesus who Resurrected with power from Death from the grave to Justify the offenders. This is the same Jesus who is indeed the Son of David and king of Israel, who is both LORD and Christ over all the kings and dominions of the earth! In the fullness of time YHWH will regather his people under the Head of the Church, Jesu(s) Christ to affect his will according to the Lord's prayer, Psalm 2, 8 and 110 as well as Genesis 1:26. The focus of my administration of the Gospel is like unto my Lord's who said "I have come not but for the lost sheep of the house of Israel.."(Mathew 15:24), and so I have come to my European kinsman according to the flesh. It is my mission to show the Israel of God the Salvation which is taught by Scripture Alone and offered in all ages by Grace Alone through Faith Alone in the work of Christ Alone to the Glory of GOD Alone. As a modern day Puritan separatist it is my goal to purify the church of Christ with Faith heretofore stated. I am studying to show my self approved, if you have any questions just ask!
