An Exposition of the Book of 1 John

Ye Are of God and Have Overcome

Delivered on 4-29- 2021 / grego. 9-6-2021

Ye Are of God and Have Overcome

Section G of the Epistle of 1 John

1Jn_4:4  Ye are of God, little children, and have overcome them: because greater is he that is in you, than he that is in the world.
1Jn 4:5  They are of the world: therefore speak they of the world, and the world heareth them.
1Jn 4:6  We are of God: he that knoweth God heareth us; he that is not of God heareth not us. Hereby know we the spirit of truth, and the spirit of error.
1Jn 4:7  Beloved, let us love one another: for love is of God; and every one that loveth is born of God, and knoweth God.
1Jn 4:8  He that loveth not knoweth not God; for God is love.
1Jn 4:9  In this was manifested the love of God toward us, because that God sent his only begotten Son into the world, that we might live through him.
1Jn 4:10  Herein is love, not that we loved God, but that he loved us, and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins.
1Jn 4:11  Beloved, if God so loved us, we ought also to love one another.
1Jn 4:12  No man hath seen God at any time. If we love one another, God dwelleth in us, and his love is perfected in us.
1Jn 4:13  Hereby know we that we dwell in him, and he in us, because he hath given us of his Spirit.
1Jn 4:14  And we have seen and do testify that the Father sent the Son to be the Saviour of the world.
1Jn 4:15  Whosoever shall confess that Jesus is the Son of God, God dwelleth in him, and he in God.
1Jn 4:16  And we have known and believed the love that God hath to us. God is love; and he that dwelleth in love dwelleth in God, and God in him.
1Jn 4:17  Herein is our love made perfect, that we may have boldness in the day of judgment: because as he is, so are we in this world.
1Jn 4:18  There is no fear in love; but perfect love casteth out fear: because fear hath torment. He that feareth is not made perfect in love.
1Jn 4:19  We love him, because he first loved us.
1Jn 4:20  If a man say, I love God, and hateth his brother, he is a liar: for he that loveth not his brother whom he hath seen, how can he love God whom he hath not seen?
1Jn 4:21  And this commandment have we from him, That he who loveth God love his brother also.
1Jn 5:1  Whosoever believeth that Jesus is the Christ is born of God: and every one that loveth him that begat loveth him also that is begotten of him.
1Jn 5:2  By this we know that we love the children of God, when we love God, and keep his commandments.
1Jn 5:3  For this is the love of God, that we keep his commandments: and his commandments are not grievous.
1Jn 5:4  For whatsoever is born of God overcometh the world: and this is the victory that overcometh the world, even our faith.
1Jn 5:5  Who is he that overcometh the world, but he that believeth that Jesus is the Son of God?
1Jn 5:6  This is he that came by water and blood, even Jesus Christ; not by water only, but by water and blood. And it is the Spirit that beareth witness, because the Spirit is truth.
1Jn 5:7  For there are three that bear record (in heaven, the Father, the Word, and the Holy Ghost:) and these three are one.
1Jn 5:8  And there are three that bear witness (in earth,) the Spirit, and the water, and the blood: and these three agree in one.
1Jn 5:9  If we receive the witness of men, the witness of God is greater: for this is the witness of God which he hath testified of his Son.
1Jn 5:10  He that believeth on the Son of God hath the witness in himself: he that believeth not God hath made him a liar; because he believeth not the record that God gave of his Son.
1Jn 5:11  And this is the record, that God hath given to us eternal life, and this life is in his Son.
1Jn 5:12  He that hath the Son hath life; and he that hath not the Son of God hath not life.
1Jn 5:13  These things have I written unto you that believe on the name of the Son of God; that ye may know that ye have eternal life, and that ye may believe on the name of the Son of God.
1Jn 5:14  And this is the confidence that we have in him, that, if we ask any thing according to his will, he heareth us:
1Jn 5:15  And if we know that he hear us, whatsoever we ask, we know that we have the petitions that we desired of him.
1Jn 5:16  If any man see his brother sin a sin which is not unto death, he shall ask, and he shall give him life for them that sin not unto death. There is a sin unto death: I do not say that he shall pray for it.
1Jn 5:17  All unrighteousness is sin: and there is a sin not unto death.
1Jn 5:18  We know that whosoever is born of God sinneth not; but he that is begotten of God keepeth himself, and that wicked one toucheth him not.
1Jn 5:19  And we know that we are of God, and the whole world lieth in wickedness.
1Jn 5:20  And we know that the Son of God is come, and hath given us an understanding, that we may know him that is true, and we are in him that is true, even in his Son Jesus Christ. This is the true God, and eternal life.
1 John 5:21  Little children, keep yourselves from idols. Amen.

Today we are going to start a further discussion of Over coming the World in it’s various ways as it battles against us.
And this is going to then be in Some ways the first section where we are going to place in perspective the funtional work of the Holy Spirit or otherwise called the Holy Ghost (KJV).
In fact, however, we have time and again been talking of the person of the Holy Spirit which the Bible does personify, and attribute to him certain predictable attributes which are used to identify Him as God. One of these predictable attributes that have been already spoken of was no different than what has been said of God’s Holy Spirit in the Law and Prophets, is what is said in

1Jn 3:22  And whatsoever we ask, we receive of him, because we keep his commandments, and do those things that are pleasing in his sight.
1Jn 3:23  And this is his commandment, That we should believe on the name of his Son Jesus Christ, and love one another, as he gave us commandment.
1Jn 3:24  And he that keepeth his commandments dwelleth in him, and he in him. And hereby we know that he abideth in us, by the Spirit which he hath given us.

And so here we see the predictable and often seen function of the Sprit of God as it gives us a knowledge of both the Law and the Gospel as stated here.
So, some things to remember before we continue from last week in connection to the Spirit of God to again continue to remember the Unction which we are Given to Know the LORD as it teaches us he power of God, the judgment ofGod, our sin and need for forgiveness of sin by Christ.

So I think last Sabbaths we had covered and recovered the meaning of Sin from its Greek construct meaning ‘no witness’ and that according to the logic of John as we saw the example of Cain in Killing his brother because his brother was righteous and he was not, and so the lawlessness of Cain which he was committed to is an expression of his lack of righteousness that comes by faith as the same instance is spoken of by , Heb 11 concerning Able’s witness which was in Faith.

So Gen 4 is a lesson for us to consider in the corrupting nature of the transgression of God’s Law.
The act of breaking a commandment or simply disregarding a law of God or a Word of God in one’s life, is a reflection of one’s inner desire of the reward of God in th life which is to come. We witness to our faith in living by the Word of life, because Christ’s righteousness has been made so real to us that we are constrained to make attempts at being righteous, and this is a witness of our Faith given to us by God’s Grace. As sin is a non-witness of Faith and righteousness which originate with the anointing of Christ before the foundations of the World, then sin in our life we claim to live in christ is a missing part of our positive witness of our Faith and our righteousness which we have power to exercise according to the word of God.

This reality of God’s law is not found only in acts of personal purity according to God’s Word, but more elementary and primarily that we love others who have received of the same message, and have the same faithful confession in the same Eternal God and the blood of his Son Jesus Christ which cleanse all unrighteousness. We find in our self not only a desire to reach out and witness our faith to our brothers in the flesh, our family, kindred, tribe and race, but we find a common unifying brotherhood with those who share our Faith. We consider our brothers to be most closely children of God like ourselves. So much so that we see Christ’s example in laying his life down for us who were given to him by the father, that it is likewise our duty to lay our life down for our brethren as well.

We also covered how our Spiritual witness of Faith in the Eternal Life of Christ the Son with the Father as an Eternal Word which had in time and history ‘come down from heaven’ is a test as to if we have the Spirit of God or not, and of how we are to judge the spirits around us and before us those ‘prophets’ teachers, preachers or ministers that bring a message which is not of the Eternal Son which came down from Heaven in the flesh as the son of man.

This was summarized in the first 3 verses of:

1Jn 4:1  Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world.
1Jn 4:2  Hereby know ye the Spirit of God: Every spirit that confesseth that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is of God:
1Jn 4:3  And every spirit that confesseth not that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is not of God: and this is that spirit of antichrist, whereof ye have heard that it should come; and even now already is it in the world.

And so with that reminder let us move on to the New section of chapter 4-5

1Jn_4:4  Ye are of God, little children, and have overcome them: because greater is he that is in you, than he that is in the world.
this is battle language with
1Jn 4:5  They (that) are of the world: therefore speak they of the world, and the world heareth them.
1Jn_4:6  We are of God: he that knoweth God heareth us; he that is not of God heareth not us. Hereby know we the spirit of truth, and the spirit of error.

If you recall the resuscitation from this morning and of the things we covered in John 6:63-65 concering communication by the Spirit and Will of God you will see a common theme:

1Jn_4:6  We are of God: he that knoweth God heareth us; he that is not of God heareth not us. Hereby know we the spirit of truth, and the spirit of error.

Have you ever considered how a particular communications device works?
In order for me to call Don he must have a phone, power to make it run, have paid provider of the service he uses, and I must have his number and as well, he must answer the phone and listen to it when I call.

The Apostle has told us of and about a word, commandments, and even laws which all are a message, we would call this all communication. Communication implies communion a ‘committing to a union’ and communion is fellowship.

  • God call us but to get the call
  • he has given power by his Spirit,
  • the account has been paid for through the meritorious work of Jesus Christ,
  • and it is Christ that can for the called keep the line of communication open between us and the Holy Father
  • that we might have further knowledge of truth by his word.
  • And this communication and fellowship we have with the Father and Son give us access to fellowship with others who speak the same language,
  • have the same frequency
  • and who’s names are found written in the same lamb’s (phone) book of life,

we can be sure we all have heard the same message by the same Word, with the same Spirit.

See without Jesus the lamb’s righteousness and faithfulness the line of communication and fellowship is unavailable, you might have the phone, but it’s powerless and does little more than make noises, you can’t call out without the power of God, and God always makes the first call to a dead sinner.

The power by his Holy Spirit and establish a connection, and the father and son of Eternality provide to communication service which our frequency operates in, as a fellowship.
Is it not amazing God has not only Called us, and taught us his Eternal Message in Jesus Christ his only Son com to earth to forgive our sin and bless us with spiritual blessings of righteousness, mercy and truth, but he also gives us a Spiritual Word that are the Laws of truth by the Mouth of God?
We do not say the bible is God inspired because of memorized Christian lingo, we say it because the language the Father and the Son speak is Scripture, Spoken by the breath of YHWH.

This is why the frequencies and language of Communication are interwoven with battle language, because there are 2 sides:

1Jn 4:5  They (that) are of the world: who speak of the world, and the world heareth them.
and those who
1Jn_4:6  are of God: who know God and heareth the word of God spoken;
he that is not of God cannot hear those who speak the word of God.
and this is our Know in the Spirit of truth, and the spirit of error.

How special is it that others in this world are not of the World but are of God and can hear him?
We all must judge by the level of Spiritual discernment given us by his Spirit.

1Jn 4:7  Beloved, let us love one another: for love is of God; and every one that loveth is born of God, and knoweth God.
1Jn 4:8  He that loveth not knoweth not God; for God is love.
One of the most exploited verses of the 20th century I think was this verse in excerpting it out from its context:
God is love.

Also it’s prior point “every one that loveth is born of God
Those who make their emotion which may only be called love in word and in tough but not in deed and in truth, have made a feeling they have God, by perverting this little piece of Scripture.

Love is Not God!

Rather God is Love, and how God command’s love is true love indeed, and only those who love by the love of God actually love.

Consider what John has prior told us:

1Jn 2:5  whoso keepeth God’s word, in him verily is the love of God perfected: hereby know we that we are in him.
And we are commanded to:
1Jn 2:15  Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him.

So by trying the spirits of love we also can see which Spirit is the teaching God’s Love by His Word and which spirit is teaching error. No difference here.

God is Love but love is not God, another aspect here seen in Overcoming

1Jn 4:8  He that loveth not knoweth not God; for God is love.
Here is the example
1Jn 4:9  In this was manifested the love of God toward us, because that God sent his only begotten Son into the world, that we might live through him.
1Jn 4:10  Herein is love, not that we loved God, but that he loved us, and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins.

This the Love that God is, this is the epitome of Love and it is the example of ever overcomer that are in the Beloved, that

1Jn 4:11 if God… so loved us, we ought also to love one another.
1Jn 4:12  No man hath seen God at any time. If we love one another, God dwelleth in us, and his love is perfected in us.
1Jn 4:13  Hereby know we that we dwell in him, and he in us, because he hath given us of his Spirit.

Here we go again, “he hath given us of his Spirit” Again this implies trying the spirits to overcome, this implies spiritual judgment or discernment, which is only lead and guided by the Word of God, the laws and commandments of God which hang from

Lev_19:18 thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself: I am YHWH, as saith Christ.

We cannot know how to love the brethren with our the spirit of God witnessing his word to our heart confirmed by the Law and Commands of God.

How do we even know Christ death is love and was the expression of love from a God who Loved us less we are guided by he spirit of God as witnessed by the Spiritual word of God.
The sacrifice of Christ on the Cross? the Condescension of the Word to be flesh and die a man in the most base ways? This is Love, and is this the love of a loving God?
If you separate the fellowship of the God Head and say the Word was not God, Christ had no pre-existence, the case is made for the Father Commanding the Son to die for the sins of his people rather than the epitome of love as spoken of by John here and recorded prior in his Gospel:

But when we realize that the Word was God and was with God and that when Jesus says

Joh_10:17-18  Therefore doth my Father love me, because I lay down my life, that I might take it again.
No man taketh it from me, but I lay it down of myself. I have power to lay it down, and I have power to take it again. This commandment have I received of my Father.

Do you relize that the Love of God that attests God is Love is this Commandment vaugly spoken of here in passing by Christ.
We can affirm then with great ease that Rom_5:5-9

…the love of God is shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Spirit which is given unto us.
Rom_5:6  For when we were yet without strength, in due time Christ died for the ungodly.
Rom 5:7  For scarcely for a righteous man will one die: yet peradventure for a good man some would even dare to die.
Rom 5:8  But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.
Rom 5:9  Much more then, being now justified by his blood, we shall be saved from wrath through him.

When the World Speaks of the things of God without true knowledge of the Love of God and being in fellowship with it it is foolishness and the opposite of Love to them. It’s another language.
God pours our his love, true love, the only love by the Holy Spirit which is given unto us.
This is why we do not blaspheme the work of Christ as some do and call the bloody sacrificial death of Christ which was the Will of God in the plan of redemption anything other than love. Because first your spirit must be true in knowing God the Son commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.
The voluntary condescension of the anointed of God come in sinful flesh to die substitution an atonement for sinners, those who have no witness of them selves to offer in faith to a perfect, pure and holy God, is the love of God by his Word and if you can feel the power of that love and are willing live and die by it you have knowledge the world cannot know and it has been shed upon you pour out into you by the work of the Holy Spirit him Self, that you might know the definition of Love know knowing the definition of Sin.

This is that Love that overcomes the world, this is how we know God is Love:

About JS Lowther

Foremost I know that I am a chief sinner saved by Grace. I am a servant of YHWH Almighty the one true God Who is Father, Son and Spirit. I believe in God's only begotten and perfect Son Jesu(s) Christ whose redemption power of my soul I have Faith in and testify of. Having been redeemed by the blood of Christ, I wish to no longer spend my time in the lusts of the flesh and of this world, but to promote the Gospel of the Kingdom by means of the knowledge of the New Covenant, a reNewal of the Covenant God made with his people Israel in the blood of Christ (Jer 31:31 and Heb 8:8) whereby He writes His Law upon the Heart and Mind beside the forgiveness of sin and transgressions. I believe Christ Jesus is the incarnate Son of God as the WORD made flesh, and the son of man born of the virgin Mary conceived of the Holy Spirit: I believe Christ Jesus Lived a perfect life for us as a living sacrifice as well as a pattern of the Sanctified newness of life a believer has in Him, I believe Christ Jesus died a cursed death on the Cross for His people of Covenant who are sinners, and I believe in Christ Jesus who Resurrected with power from Death from the grave to Justify the offenders. This is the same Jesus who is indeed the Son of David and king of Israel, who is both LORD and Christ over all the kings and dominions of the earth! In the fullness of time YHWH will regather his people under the Head of the Church, Jesu(s) Christ to affect his will according to the Lord's prayer, Psalm 2, 8 and 110 as well as Genesis 1:26. The focus of my administration of the Gospel is like unto my Lord's who said "I have come not but for the lost sheep of the house of Israel.."(Mathew 15:24), and so I have come to my European kinsman according to the flesh. It is my mission to show the Israel of God the Salvation which is taught by Scripture Alone and offered in all ages by Grace Alone through Faith Alone in the work of Christ Alone to the Glory of GOD Alone. As a modern day Puritan separatist it is my goal to purify the church of Christ with Faith heretofore stated. I am studying to show my self approved, if you have any questions just ask!
