The Doctrine of Good Works

and of

The Fruits of the Spirit

Part 7

The Law of Life in Christ & Works Tried by Fire

Let us pray today in the words of Isaiah the prophet:
Isa_32:3-4
Lord let the eyes of them that see not be dim,
and let the ears of them that hear hearken.
Let the heart also of the rash understand knowledge,
and let the tongue of the stammerer be ready to speak plainly.
Amen

Rom_8:1 There is therefore now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus, who walk not according to the flesh but according to the Spirit.
Rom 8:2 But the Law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has made me free from the law of sin and death.
Rom 8:3 For what the law could not do, in that it was weak through the flesh, God sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, and for sin, condemned sin in the flesh;
Rom 8:4 so that the righteousness of the Law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not according to the flesh but according to the Spirit.
Rom 8:5 For they who are according to the flesh mind the things of flesh, but they who are according to the Spirit the things of the Spirit.
Rom 8:6 For to be carnally minded is death, but to be spiritually minded is life and peace
Rom 8:7 because the carnal mind is enmity against God, for it is not subject to the Law of God, neither indeed can it be.
Rom 8:8 So then they who are in the flesh cannot please God.
Rom 8:9 But you are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if the Spirit of God dwells in you. But if anyone has not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of His.
Rom 8:10 And if Christ is in you, indeed the body is dead because of sin, but the Spirit is life because of righteousness.
Rom 8:11 But if the Spirit of the One who raised up Jesus from the dead dwells in you, the One who raised up Christ from the dead shall also make your mortal bodies alive by His Spirit who dwells in you.
Rom 8:12 Therefore, brothers, we are not debtors to the flesh, to live according to the flesh.
Rom 8:13 For if you live according to the flesh, you shall die. But if you through the Spirit mortify the deeds of the body, you shall live.
Rom 8:14 For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God.
Rom 8:15 For you have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear, but you have received the Spirit of adoption by which we cry, Abba, Father!
Rom 8:16 The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are the children of God.
Rom 8:17 And if we are children, then we are heirs; heirs of God and joint-heirs with Christ; so that if we suffer with Him, we may also be glorified together.
Rom 8:18 For I reckon that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the coming glory to be revealed in us.
Rom 8:19 For the earnest expectation of the creation waits for the manifestation of the sons of God.
Rom 8:20 For the creation was not willingly subjected to vanity, but because of Him who subjected it on hope
Rom 8:21 that the creation itself also shall be delivered from the bondage of corruption into the glorious liberty of the children of God.
Rom 8:22 And we know that the whole creation groans and travails in pain together until now.
Rom 8:23 And not only so, but ourselves also, who have the firstfruit of the Spirit, even we ourselves groan within ourselves, awaiting adoption, the redemption of our body.
Rom 8:24 For we are saved by hope. But hope that is seen is not hope; for what anyone sees, why does he also hope for it?
Rom 8:25 But if we hope for that which we do not see, then we wait for it with patience.
Rom 8:26 Likewise the Spirit also helps our infirmities. For we do not know what we should pray for as we ought, but the Spirit Himself makes intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered.
Rom 8:27 And He searching the hearts knows what is the mind of the Spirit, because He makes intercession for the saints according to the will of God.
Rom 8:28 And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose.
Rom 8:29 For whom He foreknew, He also predestinated to be conformed to the image of His Son, for Him to be the First-born among many brothers.
Rom 8:30 But whom He predestinated, these He also called; and whom He called, those He also justified. And whom He justified, these He also glorified.
Rom 8:31 What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us?
Rom 8:32 Truly He who did not spare His own Son, but delivered Him up for us all, how shall He not with Him also freely give us all things?
Rom 8:33 Who shall lay anything to the charge of God’s elect? It is God who justifies.
Rom 8:34 Who is he condemning? It is Christ who has died, but rather also who is raised, who is also at the right hand of God, who also intercedes for us.
Rom 8:35 Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword?
Rom 8:36 As it is written, “For Your sake we are killed all the day long. We are counted as sheep of slaughter.”
Rom 8:37 But in all these things we more than conquer through Him who loved us.
Rom 8:38 For I am persuaded that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come,
Rom 8:39 nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

In this final message concerning fruits of the spirit and good works I want to roll a lot up in to what we here have read in Romans in a few different places, and I want you by the word of God to ask yourself some of the questions we will be reading throughout this study concerning spiritual fruit production:

Rom_6:20 For when you were the slaves of sin, you were free from righteousness.
Rom 6:21 What fruit did you have then in those things of which you are now ashamed? For the end of those things is death.
Rom 6:22 But now, being made free from sin, and having become slaves to God, you have your fruit to holiness, and the end everlasting life.

Rom_7:4 So, my brothers, you also have become dead to the law by the body of Christ so that you should be married to Another, even to Him raised from the dead, that we should bring forth fruit to God.
Rom 7:5 For when we were in the flesh, the passions of sin worked in our members through the law to bring forth fruit to death.

And in 8 where we read
Rom 8:1 There is therefore now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus, who walk not according to the flesh but according to the Spirit.
Rom 8:2 But the Law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has made me free from the law of sin and death.
Rom_8:3 For what the law could not do, in that it was weak through the flesh, God sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, and for sin, condemned sin in the flesh;
Rom 8:4 so that the righteousness of the Law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not according to the flesh but according to the Spirit.
Rom 8:5 For they who are according to the flesh mind the things of flesh, but they who are according to the Spirit the things of the Spirit.
This part of Romans 8 is in many ways the explanation of how fruit is brought forth unto God, we could summarize this by saying as Paul and our Lord Christ does by walking in the spirit, which is the Law of the Spirit of life in Christ according, this the only fruit is produced according to Rom_6:22 & Rom_7:4. To produce fruit for unto God their must be “no condemnation” in regards to eternal life.
Now I said last week that we will give an account at the judgment seat of Christ and that is true, every Christian who is a true believer still has a court date set… in that day the father will not accuse you, for Christ is your righteousness and your advocate, your resurrected husband, he has paid the price for your sin by his own, the wage of sin against the Law is Paid, you will have ever lasting life in Christ, yet you will still stand before the judgment seat of Christ to give account of the works or deed both Rom_14:10 & 2Co_5:10 confirm this.
Just as it is said in
Ecc_12:13 Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter. Fear God, and keep His commandments. For this is the whole duty of man.
Ecc 12:14 For God shall bring every work into judgment, with every secret thing, whether it is good, or whether evil.
and so Truly, God overlooked the times of our ignorance, BUT now He strictly commands all men everywhere to repent, Act 17:30
Act 17:31 because He has appointed a day in which He is going to judge the world in righteousness by a Man whom He appointed, having given proof to all by raising Him from the dead.
And so make no mistake about it every man is judged by the straight edge, the measurement, the ruler of the perfection Jesus, this is How YHWH will judges us all for our words, for our fruit if they can even be called fruit, and our fruit will all fall short to Christ’s perfect work, but whom Christ has given his perfect life for, and God the Father has imputed Christ Grace to those will be saved, to be judged by Christ, you and I (if you are saved), will give an account of all we have done for Christ and it will be judged nakedly and in truth as God shall bring every work into judgment, with every secret thing, and so we will regardless of our status as saved yet give an account before Christ, we will have our will revealed to that perfect son of Man who is the son of God the Word eternal.
Please hear that before I move on.
The remainder of this study, in the few minutes we have left is not a dogmatic judgment of your state in salvation, for those who d not agree with me, but it is a dogmatic judgment in telling you that you will be judged, you will give an account for all the fruit you have brought forth unto God that he has considered to be on his table, and the measure he will use to judge your fruit and you works, that is the works you have done if they have been brought forth by the fruit of the spirit: goodness and righteousness and truth;
Proving what is acceptable unto the Lord.
and Gal_5:22-23 enumeration of the fruits of the spirit is: love,G26 joy,G5479 peace,G1515 patience,G3115 kindness,G5544 goodness,G19 faith,G4102 gentleness,G4236 self-control. against which there is no Law thank YHWH God. Thank him that the Love, Joy, Faith and the like he pours into us is first and foremost pure because he is pure, holy because he is holy, sanctified because he sanctified himself for us. Thank YHWH God Almighty he gives us his pure fruit freely by Grace which the law can not stain.
Yet, what does that fruit in us and on our branches look like?
In what are they contained? In our works, our deeds, our doing which God will judge.
And so we are called upon with all the measure of Grace and faith we have been give, we are called upon by all the love and joy of Christ we can fulfill, we are called upon by all the patience and kindness we have access to, by all the goodness and faith we can exert as well as all the gentleness and self control we can harness in our will, Proving what is acceptable unto the Lord.
And so, if those works are good they are good by God’s measurement of God’s goodness and righteousness and truth and what content of purity they posses in comparison to the Word of God.
How do our works represent our fruit and how does our fruit represent the vine and how does the true vine we claim to be attached to represent the Father who is the husbandman the vine dresser that tends it’s soil and has his men prune it withered and corrupt branches and cast them into the fire?
The Scripture I read said plainly in Eph_5:9-10 …the fruit of the Spirit is in all goodness and righteousness and truth; Proving what is acceptable unto the Lord.
Our duty, our love, joy and Faith, and all other qualities given to us before our works are excised ar to be exercise in Proving what is acceptable unto the Lord. or as Rom_12:2 said… the transformed and renewing of our mind, is in order to prove by you what is that good and pleasing and perfect will of God.
This is that active pruning in our life, this is proving what the will of the Lord is and the standard by which we prove and Prune is the Law of life in christ, this is the law with no condemnation unto death.
Rom_8:13 … if you live according to the flesh, you shall die. But if you through the Spirit mortify the deeds of the body, you shall live.
As one Puritan minister put it, “be killing sin or sin will be killing you..”

This is Why this doctrine is important to know how to walk and work as we are in this flesh body.

As Christians with the mind of Christ, thinking upon the Word of God with Love and joy and Faith and all other fruits of Grace we must be Comparing the quality and purity of our works which we do in God’s service, as the end of all fruit is in having the ability to replicate their kind, the specimen of perfection the True vine Jesus Christ, and even that man was judged by God the father as righteous by the word of God that is the son of God his own spoken word, therefore shall we expect that the Lord Christ will judge us by any other standard when he considers the fruits we have bore in this life we now live in the flesh and claim to be upon his vine?

And so their is the place for that great quote:
Rom 7:14 For we know that the law is spiritual, but I am carnal, sold under sin.
The Spirit of God and of Christ consistently chooses the desire of the will of God by knowing the Law of God and working it our as a good work, the Law of God is the walk in the spirit which the fleshly carnal man cannot receive or even desire. The Law of God is Spiritual and is the spiritual perfect measure of every fruit of the spirit as well as every work which we do and to finalize and confirm the purity of the fruit and the work we cross reference the two with each other:
Does the fruit of the Spirit lead us to the Law of God which is spiritual?
Does that which we call the Law of God contain within its works the fruits of the spirit?
Does the fruit of the Spirit and the Law of God which we perform in service to God contain the likeness of the True vine by preaching the Gospel of Grace?
Does our Gospel which we believe by the fruit imparted to us by the Spirit of God lead to the glorification of the Father?
And is Father, Son and Spirit glorified in the life which we live and in the faith which we have as given by their work and not our own?
This is circle kindred, The Father has sent the son to pity us, to be our propitiation, He has planted this true vine in Jesus Christ that we might be his branches to bring forth his fruit for his table, and like every farmer the work which we the branches exert must be the fruits he desires to have on his table, Christ our Lord was sent into time that we might be his branches and bear his fruit abundantly by his love expressed in keeping his commandment which are not grievous but is his joy fulfilled.
And so since we know we will sin and fall short of God glory in his law we have this:
1Jn_2:1 My little children, these things write I unto you, that ye sin not. And if any man sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous:
1Jn 2:2 And he is the propitiation for our sins: and not for ours only, but also for the sins of the whole world.
1Jn 2:3 And hereby we do know that we know him, if we keep his commandments.
1Jn 2:4 He that saith, I know him, and keepeth not his commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him.
1Jn 2:5 But whoso keepeth his word, in him verily is the love of God perfected: hereby know we that we are in him.

And because Jesus Christ will advocate for us by his resurrection and that we have been in him we then have this:

1Jn_3:1 Behold, what manner of love the Father hath bestowed upon us, that we should be called the sons of God: therefore the world knoweth us not, because it knew him not.
1Jn 3:2 Beloved, now are we the sons of God, and it doth not yet appear what we shall be: but we know that, when he shall appear, we shall be like him; for we shall see him as he is.
1Jn 3:3 And every man that hath this hope in him purifieth himself, even as he is pure.
1Jn 3:4 Whosoever committeth sin transgresseth also the law: for sin is the transgression of the law.

And so You heard me talk about the ‘regulative principle of worship’, and in our fellowship it is a regular principle, namely that we give back to God that which he has first given us.

Therefore when we see a deviation from the Law of God as he has reveled in his Word we reform our worship, as we constantly in our life should be reforming in the Glorification of God by our worship; it only begs us to reform our worship to glorify God by its alignment with his holy, just and Good law, which is his word designed and designated by the holy spirit of God to be used by, not the flesh, but by those who walk in the spirit, it unto us the word of life has come to see it as our reasonable, logical, rational service.

Let me go back to a few points Paul established related to the fruit of the spirit which is simple goodness.
That is Not goodness so simple our fleshly carnal heart can define of its own self what is ‘good’ and ‘no good’, no but good-ness regulated in worship by the principles of the Word of God.
We start our dead, dark and empty,

Rom_1:28; says we did not likeG1381 to retain God in our knowledge, so God gave us over to a reprobate mind, to do those things which are not convenient; Being filled with all unrighteousness…

the word translated likeG1381 is edokimasan / εδοκιμασαν this word and its relatives dokimos & dokeō are also translated prove test or try meaning to ‘think about’.
and so we see the state of the darkened mind.

Rom_2:18 speaks of those who know the Law but lie to themselves believing they can fulfill it’s righteousness, that they boast they say they know his will, and approvest (test) or prove) the things that are more excellent, being instructed out of the law, showing indeed the law teaches excellence or goodness.

But in condemnation of these he says,
Rom_3:20 “by the deeds of the law there shall no flesh be justified in his sight: for by the law is the knowledge of sin.”.
And so without the righteousness of Christ there is no difference between the darkened mind who knows the law or those who do not know it… it has no light, they can together both do nothing.

Yet by the mercy of God through Jesus Christ we are,
Rom_12:2 …not conformed to this world: but transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.

We prove, test or / try, we like God in our mind that is the change of the mind of Christ, to like what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.

Rom_14:22 Hast thou faith? have it to thyself before God. Happy is he that condemneth not himself in that thing which he allowet or proves or likes in his mind.

and let me end off with my proof of our duty as Christians possesed of the spirit of God with this:
1Co_3:11For other foundation can no man lay than that is laid, which is Jesus Christ.
1Co 3:12 Now if any man build upon this foundation gold, silver, precious stones, wood, hay, stubble;
1Co 3:13 Every man’s work shall be made manifest: for the day shall declare it, because it shall be revealed by fire; and the fire sshall tryG1381 every man’s work of what sort it is.
1Co 3:14 If any man’s work abide which he hath built thereupon, he shall receive a reward.
1Co 3:15 If any man’s work shall be burned, he shall suffer loss: but he himself shall be saved; yet so as by fire.
1Co 3:16 Know ye not that ye are the temple of God, and that the Spirit of God dwelleth in you?
1Co 3:17 If any man defile the temple of God, him shall God destroy; for the temple of God is holy, which temple ye are.
1Co 3:18 Let no man deceive himself. If any man among you seemeth to be wise in this world, let him become a fool, that he may be wise.
1Co 3:19 For the wisdom of this world is foolishness with God. For it is written, He taketh the wise in their own craftiness.
( 1Co_16:3; 2Co_8:8; 2Co_8:22; 2Co_13:5; Gal_6:4; Eph_5:10; Php_1:10; 1Th_2:4; 1Th_5:21; 1Ti_3:10; Heb_3:9; 1Pe_1:7; 1Jn_4:1.)

Any foundation laid that is not laid by Christ the Word is not a foundation at all, as it will be proved, and we all will be proved to see what our mind likened and what our mind has liked above and beside the word of God’s revelation. All that is not true will be burned away in that day of proof. All are works will be tried by the fire of the eyes of the LORD GOD YHWH Almighty, who has tried or proved all his words seven times in a furnace of the earth.

And so our works which we call good, will be proved to see if they are good, and the LORD will refine our works in judgment to see what shall abide his fire, his earthen vessel found in the man Jesus Christ, the man by which every man’s goodness shall be tried, the man which walked with no sin who never broke the Law of YHWH God.
Let me show one point in ending off of this study concerning how the fruit of the spirit which we are given freely by the Grace of God, fruit that against such there is no law Gal_5:23, is to have in it the law of God and the Gospel, that is the seed within that fruit and that which is pure about that fruit, that production which we do our deeds that help in producing this fruit for the father, remember Paul said:
Rom_7:18 For we know that in our flesh dwells no good thing. tough the will to do good is present with us, in our flesh how to desire and perform what is good we do can not find.

Paul says our proving or acknowledgment that we are not doing what is good is proof that we know the Law is good, and we are not doing what is good as he said

Rom_7:12 …indeed the Law is holy, and the commandment is holy and just and good.

And this is true because:
Rom_7:14 we know that the law is spiritual: but I am carnal, sold under sin.
And so to know sin, we must know the law: for we had not known the sin of covetousness, except the law had said, Thou shalt not covet.
And so how can we then be sure of what is good about what we do? and how can we know that our fruit which we call good is not of the flesh as it is done in our life in the flesh?
How can we have any part of our works abide the fire of God’s floor and not be burned up in the fire of God’s Judgment?

We need a spiritual rule of Faith. We need a way to regulate our worship, and the Spirit God has given us is happily and joyfully the same Holy Spirit that raised Jesus Christ from the dead, and blessedly is the same Holy Spirit which inspired the law of God which fleshly man’s mind does not like or desire or find ‘good’.

So Here is what David said again about ultimate good in that teth (T) section of Psalm 119:
Psa 119:65 *Good Thou hast dealt with thy servant, O LORD, according unto thy word.
Psa 119:66 Teach me good judgment and knowledge: for I have believed thy commandments.
Psa 119:67 Before I was afflicted I went astray: but now have I kept thy word.
Psa 119:68 Thou art good, and doest good; teach me thy statutes.
Psa 119:69 The proud have forged a lie against me: but I will keep thy precepts with my whole heart.
Psa 119:70 Their heart is as fat as grease; but I delight in thy law.
Psa 119:71 It is good for me that I have been afflicted; that I might learn thy statutes.
Psa 119:72 The law of thy mouth is *Goodlier unto me than thousands of gold and silver.

And so Consider what this prayer and song is saying?

But what does that mean?
It means God deals well or good or terificly with you when he:
1.deals with his servant, according to his word, his covenant of Grace
2.Teaches us good judgment and knowledge: after we have believed in his commandments.
3. is good, and does good in teaching us His statutes
4.Teaches us the opposite of the proud, who lie with fat or puffed up hearts, and that is to keep YHWH’s precepts with our whole heart. and to I delight in God’s law.
5. teaches us to recognize and give thanks, knowing it was and is good to have been afflicted; that we might learn YHWH God’s statutes.
6. teaches us to resolve firmly that The law of YHWH’s mouth is *Goodlier / better than thousands of dollars in gold and silver.

Do we want to know what the good works of God are? and how to walk in his ways? and what beareth fruit unto God? Is that our will ? The desire of the truly renewed inward man is to desire God’s Good.
Consider the state of the inward man and his desire to tast and see the fruits of God’s Law:
Psa_1:1 Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor standeth in the way of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful.
Psa 1:2 But his delight is in the law of the LORD; and in his law doth he meditate day and night.
Psa 1:3 And he shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that bringeth forth his fruit in his season; his leaf also shall not wither; and whatsoever he doeth shall prosper.

Do we want to know how to be blessed and undefiled by the world, to not do iniquity as James and John has said in agreement to the words of Jesus?

Psa_119:1 Blessed are the undefiled in the way, who walk in the law of the LORD.
Psa 119:2 Blessed are they that keep his testimonies, and that seek him with the whole heart.
Psa 119:3 They also do no iniquity: they walk in his ways.
Psa 119:4 Thou hast commanded us to keep thy precepts diligently.
Psa 119:5 O that my ways were directed to keep thy statutes!
Psa 119:6 Then shall I not be ashamed, when I have respect unto all thy commandments.

To God ever one of my children and the children of my kin and friends would pray verses in this empty and dead world!

Psa_119:37 Turn away mine eyes from beholding vanity; and quicken thou me in thy way.
Psa 119:38 Stablish thy word unto thy servant, who is devoted to thy fear.
Psa 119:39 Turn away my reproach which I fear: for thy judgments are good.

and that we all could with our heart would ask in Jesus Name, a request that he has promised he will give us in Jesus name, as Joh_15:16 hath said
Ye have not chosen Christ, but Christ hath chosen you, and ordained you, that ye should go and bring forth fruit, and that your fruit should remain (on your branch): that whatsoever ye shall ask of the Father in my name, he may give it you.

This is what it means to:
1Th_5:21 Prove all things; hold fast that which is good.
and it is by that which is God’s good that we:
1Th 5:22 Abstain from all appearance of evil.
and therefore
1Th 5:23 … the very God of peace will sanctify us wholly; and our whole spirit and soul and body will be preserved blameless unto the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.
for
1Th 5:24 Faithful is he that calleth you, who also will do it.

About JS Lowther

Foremost I know that I am a chief sinner saved by Grace. I am a servant of YHWH Almighty the one true God Who is Father, Son and Spirit. I believe in God's only begotten and perfect Son Jesu(s) Christ whose redemption power of my soul I have Faith in and testify of. Having been redeemed by the blood of Christ, I wish to no longer spend my time in the lusts of the flesh and of this world, but to promote the Gospel of the Kingdom by means of the knowledge of the New Covenant, a reNewal of the Covenant God made with his people Israel in the blood of Christ (Jer 31:31 and Heb 8:8) whereby He writes His Law upon the Heart and Mind beside the forgiveness of sin and transgressions. I believe Christ Jesus is the incarnate Son of God as the WORD made flesh, and the son of man born of the virgin Mary conceived of the Holy Spirit: I believe Christ Jesus Lived a perfect life for us as a living sacrifice as well as a pattern of the Sanctified newness of life a believer has in Him, I believe Christ Jesus died a cursed death on the Cross for His people of Covenant who are sinners, and I believe in Christ Jesus who Resurrected with power from Death from the grave to Justify the offenders. This is the same Jesus who is indeed the Son of David and king of Israel, who is both LORD and Christ over all the kings and dominions of the earth! In the fullness of time YHWH will regather his people under the Head of the Church, Jesu(s) Christ to affect his will according to the Lord's prayer, Psalm 2, 8 and 110 as well as Genesis 1:26. The focus of my administration of the Gospel is like unto my Lord's who said "I have come not but for the lost sheep of the house of Israel.."(Mathew 15:24), and so I have come to my European kinsman according to the flesh. It is my mission to show the Israel of God the Salvation which is taught by Scripture Alone and offered in all ages by Grace Alone through Faith Alone in the work of Christ Alone to the Glory of GOD Alone. As a modern day Puritan separatist it is my goal to purify the church of Christ with Faith heretofore stated. I am studying to show my self approved, if you have any questions just ask!
