Answers from the Pentateuch

Part 6

Curse and Sorrow

GENESIS 3

1Pe_3:15-16 …Sanctify the Lord God in your hearts: and be ready always to give an answer to every man that asketh you a reason of the hope that is in you with meekness and fear: 16 Having a good conscience; that, whereas they speak evil of you, as of evildoers, they may be ashamed that falsely accuse your good conversation in Christ.

A portion of the study last week was to open our eyes to the understanding of the word ARUM and its root and derivatives. ARUM is also so spelled ORUM, yet the Hebrew text translates the word according to the dictated context whether it be Naked-ness or Prudent -ness: both coming from that same word and having a common Hebraic understanding in ‘AR or light’ , which is of course the common source of sight to the eyes of our flesh and to the eyes of our spirit; to show this thought we had considered Luke 11 and the direction in which Christ our Lord focuses the WORD of God as an illuminator:
Luk_11:33 No man, when he hath lighted a candle, putteth it in a secret place, neither under a bushel, but on a candlestick, that they which come in may see the light.
Luk 11:34 The light of the body is the eye: therefore when thine eye is single, thy whole body also is full of light; but when thine eye is evil, thy body also is full of darkness.
Luk 11:35 Take heed therefore that the light which is in thee be not darkness.
Luk 11:36 If thy whole body therefore be full of light, having no part dark, the whole shall be full of light, as when the bright shining of a candle doth give thee light.
Christ speaks of himself as the Word and with that Word he carries with it the meaning seen similarly in Mat_5:15-18, referencing the Good works of the law to shine as the light of Christians , and this from David who says in Psa_119:105 …Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.
the LXX says ‘Thy Law”…Nomos in Psalm 119:105.
Also, Psa 119:130, says… The entrance of thy words giveth light; it giveth understanding unto the simple.
Just as Christ the WORD proclaimed this purpose of the Apostle towards the Gentiles:
Act_26:18 To open their eyes, and to turn them from darkness to light, and from the power of Satan unto God, that they may receive forgiveness of sins, and inheritance among them which are sanctified by faith that is in me. To this point we will see promised in the first prophecy of Christ.
Last we also considered the words of Psalm 19 as well to this subject in understanding the biblical relevance of the Law of God to the happenings in Eden.

When we accept Christ we accept him as the WORD the LOGOs of God which has been since the beginning, as that which was lost which mandates logic to Adam and that which gives us hope to live more as our original state was, and more like Christ:
The point to be here made, and the elements of this context we are to behold through out the Scriptural testimony is the affect of the ‘knowledge of Good and Evil’ upon ADaM, that is the affect of God’s WORD and GOD’s Law when it gives understanding it exposes, it makes naked the fallen state which was employed in the acquiring of that knowledge which was by a violation of the Commandment or Charge: all throughoutt the Pentateuch the word used for command, found in Gen_2:16, Gen_3:11 and Gen_3:16 TzU-Eh is the word commonly used for a command or a charge to enact or remind of a law to be obeyed.

It is important to see the one impact of recognizing the Word of God operating in Adamic man prior to the fall as his Logic / Logos as his original spiritual state, that is he was made upright, they by nature followed the logic of God’s Word. Yet in the fall, the knowledge of Good and Evil introduces an element that Adam had not known which was attained by his desire or covetousness to use logic outside of God’s Word God’s Logic, the spiritual likeness ADaM was given in creation as his standard operation. This stealing of God’s knowledge, separates man from God rendering him naked in the prudence of his knowledge that he is a sinner, where as prior Adam was naked or prudent with no shame due to his closeness to God and his covering by God’s word, Now after the theft of God’s Knowledge of Good and Evil, evil is present and he sees himself as God sees him a naked sinner made of dust, ashamed before God.
Jas_1:15 …when lust hath conceived, it bringeth forth sin: and sin, when it is finished, bringeth forth death.

So it is like the marriage relationship, when a husband and wife are naked and unashamed it is because they are prudent of the roles YHWH GOD has made them in, and together they are heirs of the grace of Life according to the mandate and as help mates, yet when the marriage is defiled by rebellion or worse of adultery, the knowledge of nakedness is shame to the marriage as a body and death will shortly ensue due to shame.
The simplicity and complexity of this matter of exposing the nature of the fall here is to acknowledge the way in which we allow the Law of God to work upon us, how we view ourselves in light of this enlightened yet fallen state? Do we boast in the knowledge of our exposure? That is that we assume righteousness in the standard that in fact condemns us by the very fact that we have it’s knowledge? Or do we hide ourselves from the presence of THE LORD GOD-YHWH, as we know we are nothing beside him but dust? That is we hide ourselves from God because our deeds are known to be evil?
We should accept the Word for what it is, and allow Him to cover us in his person and in his mediating atonement, this is the third and only option we have available to us which meets all the requirements of the Word to both cover our shame and walk with God again: we must learn to live according to God’s Law with full knowledge we are naked without Christ, without the Word restored to our state we are shamed.
That from the point of the fall by desired elevation, the knowledge of Good and Evil, the knowledge of Sin that was imparted, must be given it’s place as the Perfect Word by faith, faith to be restored in every ADaM, as that which was and which is lost, Adam fell by a lack of faith in the Word which said ‘thou shalt’ or ‘thou shalt not’.
Now open your eyes and see the grace and truth in the Man Jesus Christ, the Word made flesh, who came in the likeness of sinful flesh to condemn sin in the flesh that we might be the righteousness of God, who walk not after the fallen state of flesh in covetousness but after the original state of Spirit in subjection to YHWH GOD.

Let us read:

Gen_3:7 And the eyes of them both were opened, and they knew that they were naked; and they sewed fig leaves together, and made themselves aprons.
Gen_3:8 And they heard the voice of the LORD God walking in the garden in the cool of the day: and Adam and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the LORD God amongst the trees of the garden.
Gen 3:9 And the LORD God called unto Adam, and said unto him, Where art thou?
Gen 3:10 And he said, I heard thy voice in the garden, and I was afraid, because I was naked; and I hid myself.
Gen_3:11 And (YHWH GOD) said, Who told thee that thou wast naked? Hast thou eaten of the tree, whereof I commanded thee that thou shouldest not eat?
Gen_3:12 And the man said, The woman whom thou gavest to be with me, she gave me of the tree, and I did eat.

Again a manifestation of the knowledge acquired is being used, and yet it all the more condemns by the shift of guilt in opposition of the truth, that the Man was responsible for the actions of his Woman, which as we had pointed our prior he was given and proclaimed as ‘bone of MY bone, and flesh of MY flesh’, so in this statement or deposition Adam is recorded as reversing the roles of that order: notice The Woman you gave me…she gave me…, here is a reversal of order, and at that Adam makes God the author of the problem in his estimation, as well the statement makes the woman the dominant one in this estimation, as if God gave the Woman to give things to Adam rather than to help Adam as the original order was set, that Adam was head under God and then the Woman under Adam. But here we have the first argument against the Perfect Word of God, using supposition to make void the original order, similar to what we have in Christianity today in the logic used to abrogate the Law of God by use of later epistles not founded on the Law for it’s original context, here is it’s first use, in Adam’s attempt to use God’s Word as to his giving of a Woman to him to defeated the original logic as to what woman was made for: a Help mate, and help implies the one being helped as the object of the mate’s purpose…this is long and exhaustive way to say just go back and read it for what it says!

Gen_3:13 And the LORD God said unto the woman, What is this that thou hast done? And the woman said, The serpent beguiled me, and I did eat.
YHWH, sticking to the original order of headship than after the man proceeds to the Woman, and she as well blames the serpent and his ability to decieve or beguile, recalling that in Gen_3:1, it was the LORD God that had made the serpent subtle or prudent of the knowledge, so this again is none other than the Woman’s way to blame YHWH for her deception.
the Greek word is also used in ηπατη / Epate or απατα / Apata is also used in Eph_5:6 Let no man deceive you with vain words: for because of these things cometh the wrath of God upon the children of disobedience.
in the use of ex-epate
2Co_11:3 But I fear, lest by any means, as the serpent beguiled Eve through his subtilty, so your minds should be corrupted from the simplicity that is in Christ.
this deception comes by vain / empty words which through subtlety corrupts the mind from simplicity in the WORD…Simplicity is in this context of Gen 2 and 3 “thou shalt” eat this and “thou shalt not” eat this, rather the words of this prudent Serpent caused that simplicity to be doubted in preference to ‘another word’ which may do something for us that we hope the knowledge will do; but what was not known was what GOD knew, and what was directly conveyed in the command ‘you shall surly die’
But nevertheless judgment is dispensed in the order of the human construct of order, placing the serpent as that which should have been as a beast subject to ADaM’s dominion according to the mandate regardless of how subtle or prudent he was, he was subject to Man and Woman if they kept the dominion given, Dominion under God. This order perhaps puts a new light on the meaning of ‘you shall be the head and not the tail’ of Deu_28:13-44:

Gen_3:14 And the LORD God said unto the serpent, Because thou hast done this, thou art cursed above all cattle, and above every beast of the field; upon thy belly shalt thou go, and dust shalt thou eat all the days of thy life:
Notice the curse is directed towards the Serpent, some of what is said is so about serpents in general and some is not, this statement must be applied to the angelic messenger as well as to the specific serpent in the garden, I am not willing to make divisions on the meaning of all of this, but I would say that by following the prophetic relevance this curse upon the serpent and that which follows as relayed in the rest of scripture, we are in effect reading about. for me this statement must be taken as a whole with the serpent understood as the context of scripture speaks of him. If we limit the serpent to a viper, that is that we cast the blame on the animal we undoubtedly loose the the force of the statement, even in the reading of the text we see that this all is in reference to THE Serpent / Eh-NaHaSh not נחשׁים/ NaHaSIM or Serpents (plural), but this is directed to this Serpent and that which the totality of Scripture as we had seen in Rev_12:9 ‘the great dragon, that old serpent, called the Devil, and Satan, which deceiveth the whole world…’. So we then apply this understanding to those who are deceived by the beguiling of the Serpent in like manner. Yet in a purely exegetical way we can not see Satan or the Devil in the sense of the being we in Christianity are use to hearing about, but we can see the personification of those terms ‘satan and devil’ in this being, as those terms specifically indicate an satan or Adversary and a diabolos / devil, diabol is a Greek compound word which indicates ‘through throwing’, BOL is easy to remember because we have a game called bowling indicating the same operating verb turned noun in dia-bol, it is used in words which indicate throwing or pitching a tent, throwing on a coat as well as casting a stone or arrow, in use relating to a person it is almost always in reference to one who lies, deceives, slanders or accuses another: is all of this a good explanation of this serpent of Gen 3? Yes and in the Hebrew he is an adversary with out explanation needed; yet what should be said and confirmed, is that all through out the LXX Greek scriptures the word Satan in Hebrew is translated Diabolos in Job, Psalms and all through out the scriptures. and a telling piece of sacred history which tells of the understanding of Satan in the time of Christ is the apocryphal book of Sirach from the Deuterocanon:
Sir_21:27 When the ungodly curseth Satan, he curseth his own soul. Satan is only transliterated 2 times in the LXX, this is one of them.
But why does this portion of the curse speak about physical actions of the devil satan as a serpent? My best answer is it would have to be allegory and a warning for us as readers and they the hearers of what one who’s soul is given to the affect of Selfishness which is taught by the Serpent’s beguiling seen in the covetousness of ADaM to have YHWH GOD’s Knowledge and to ultimately be Gods of there own soul his heart. The point is that those who follow the message of the devil satan which is placed in the world to decieve the world as his angel / messenger, is one whos own soul is his god and will be doing so on his belly and eating dust, per haps this was part of Paul’s thoughts in:
Php_3:18-19…the enemies (εχθρους / Exthrous ) of the cross of Christ: Whose end is destruction, whose God is their belly, and whose glory is in their shame, who mind earthly things. The flesh is made of dust which is earthly.
further:
Gen_3:15 And I will put enmity (εχθραν / Exthran) between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel.
Here again we see the personification of those who are Exthrous and at Exthran, enemies and at enmity with the woman and her seed. This curse is not directed at the woman or at Adam in general though it is obvious that its affect is more damning and damaging to ADaM as a people than to the personification of the Serpent it is rather  to his angels (Messengers) through out history. Yet in strict reading of the text, we are to view this curse as against the seed of the serpent and that is all he represents, which then is a blessing for the seed of the woman that shall but have a bruise on his heel, but the promise then is to those who have the enemy seed that they will be crushed by he who will be the seed of a woman, and as we know this is our Lord Jesus Christ the 2nd Adam which did in his life, death and resurrection begin to crush the head of this serpent, which we shall as followers of Christ shall take part in Rom 16:20 …the God of peace shall bruise Satan under your feet shortly…
This curse pronounced for our hearing is known to those who possess the scriptures from this point on that we may anticipate the Gospel here preached, for if the curse was spoken to the serpent who is in fact an agent messenger whom we do not speak with, nor he to us, but is represented in the soul of the ungodly, then the curse is a promise to those who are bound by the deception of sin, and those who have not yet met the LORD GOD and acknowledged that their naked body is dust in his light, and that we have no power to stand and walk beside a holy GOD, yet this curse against this fact is as well that we may be clothed by the promise of the coming of the Word we violated to give us peace with God by his covering, that is his atonement, his feet infact cover the serpent and crush his Adversity and his strike against us through the feet of the Gospel.

About JS Lowther

Foremost I know that I am a chief sinner saved by Grace. I am a servant of YHWH Almighty the one true God Who is Father, Son and Spirit. I believe in God's only begotten and perfect Son Jesu(s) Christ whose redemption power of my soul I have Faith in and testify of. Having been redeemed by the blood of Christ, I wish to no longer spend my time in the lusts of the flesh and of this world, but to promote the Gospel of the Kingdom by means of the knowledge of the New Covenant, a reNewal of the Covenant God made with his people Israel in the blood of Christ (Jer 31:31 and Heb 8:8) whereby He writes His Law upon the Heart and Mind beside the forgiveness of sin and transgressions. I believe Christ Jesus is the incarnate Son of God as the WORD made flesh, and the son of man born of the virgin Mary conceived of the Holy Spirit: I believe Christ Jesus Lived a perfect life for us as a living sacrifice as well as a pattern of the Sanctified newness of life a believer has in Him, I believe Christ Jesus died a cursed death on the Cross for His people of Covenant who are sinners, and I believe in Christ Jesus who Resurrected with power from Death from the grave to Justify the offenders. This is the same Jesus who is indeed the Son of David and king of Israel, who is both LORD and Christ over all the kings and dominions of the earth! In the fullness of time YHWH will regather his people under the Head of the Church, Jesu(s) Christ to affect his will according to the Lord's prayer, Psalm 2, 8 and 110 as well as Genesis 1:26. The focus of my administration of the Gospel is like unto my Lord's who said "I have come not but for the lost sheep of the house of Israel.."(Mathew 15:24), and so I have come to my European kinsman according to the flesh. It is my mission to show the Israel of God the Salvation which is taught by Scripture Alone and offered in all ages by Grace Alone through Faith Alone in the work of Christ Alone to the Glory of GOD Alone. As a modern day Puritan separatist it is my goal to purify the church of Christ with Faith heretofore stated. I am studying to show my self approved, if you have any questions just ask!
