“Leadership, Guidance, Obedience and Goal (Gen 7:13 & Num 10:13)”
This message is led by two liturgical calendar remembrances in the Word of God that tell us that both Genesis 7:11 and Numbers 10:11 took place in this last lunar week of the New Moon month. In considering the commonality of these reembraces we are drawn to consider the leadership quality of Noah and Moses as an example of proper family, church, & national government.

Leadership, Guidance, Obedience and Goal
(Gen 7:13 & Num 10:13)Gen 7:11 In the six hundredth year of Noah’s life, in the second month, the seventeenth day of the month, the same day were all the fountains of the great deep broken up, and the windows of heaven were opened.
Gen 7:12 And the rain was upon the earth forty days and forty nights.
Gen 7:13 In the selfsame day entered Noah, and Shem, and Ham, and Japheth, the sons of Noah, and Noah’s wife, and the three wives of his sons with them, into the ark;
&
Num 10:13 And they first took their journey according to the commandment of the LORD by the hand of Moses.
This week according to the time of the month and year that we are in, we have 2 remembrances, and I was inclined to just mention both and look at another subject, but it occurred to me that there is a commonality between the 2 scriptures of this month, and that is this Faithful Leadership, guidance, obedience and a goal.
In this week’s reading was how Noah as the patriarch lead his family, 8 souls saved by water, they followed his guidance, they obeyed in order to achieve a goal, and that was salvation from the flood that God promised.
Likewise, Moses was the leader of Israel from Egypt, he guided Israel and found those to help guide Israel, such as Hobab or Jethro, the Moses obeyed God and was guided by His Word, the people obeyed, and the end goal was accomplished of the people entering and possessing Canaan.
Now,
If we consider the world that we live in today, we see a people who hate leadership, they hate guidance and they hate obedience… they have no goal. No goal for themselves or their progeny.
And perhaps by and large we have a lack in faithfulness in people, even Christians because we have a lack of faithful leaders & guides.
Look at the character of Noah and Moses from Heb 11, and you immediately know that this Chapter only speaks of faithful men and women:
Heb_11:7 By faith Noah, being warned of God of things not seen as yet, moved with fear, prepared an ark to the saving of his house; by the which he condemned the world, and became heir of the righteousness which is by faith.
Heb 11:24 By faith Moses, when he was come to years, refused to be called the son of Pharaoh’s daughter;
Heb 11:25 Choosing rather to suffer affliction with the people of God, than to enjoy the pleasures of sin for a season;
Heb 11:26 Esteeming the reproach of Christ greater riches than the treasures in Egypt: for he had respect unto the recompence of the reward.
Here we see 2 men, leaders of God’s people and we see an exemplary display of faithfulness.
And from the stories and narratives we likewise see an exemplary display of guidance towards a goal.
And of both Noah and Moses we know of those who obeyed faithfully and followed after that guidance, because they are the men and stories we have in scripture that speaks of their faithfulness.
Noah:
Heb 11:7 By faith Noah, being warned of God of things not seen as yet, moved with fear, prepared an ark to the saving of his house; by the which he condemned the world, and became heir of the righteousness which is by faith.
Gen 7:11 In the six hundredth year of Noah’s life, in the second month, the seventeenth day of the month, the same day were all the fountains of the great deep broken up, and the windows of heaven were opened.
Gen 7:12 And the rain was upon the earth forty days and forty nights.
Gen 7:13 In the selfsame day entered Noah, and Shem, and Ham, and Japheth, the sons of Noah, and Noah’s wife, and the three wives of his sons with them, into the ark;
Gen 7:14 They, and every beast after his kind, and all the cattle after their kind, and every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth after his kind, and every fowl after his kind, every bird of every sort.
Gen 7:15 And they went in unto Noah into the ark, two and two of all flesh, wherein is the breath of life.
Gen 7:16 And they that went in, went in male and female of all flesh, as God had commanded him: and the LORD shut him in.
Gen 7:17 And the flood was forty days upon the earth; and the waters increased, and bare up the ark, and it was lift up above the earth.
Gen 7:18 And the waters prevailed, and were increased greatly upon the earth; and the ark went upon the face of the waters.
Gen 7:19 And the waters prevailed exceedingly upon the earth; and all the high hills, that were under the whole heaven, were covered.
Gen 7:20 Fifteen cubits upward did the waters prevail; and the mountains were covered.
Gen 7:21 And all flesh died that moved upon the earth, both of fowl, and of cattle, and of beast, and of every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth, and every man:
Gen 7:22 All in whose nostrils was the breath of life, of all that was in the dry land, died.
Gen 7:23 And every living substance was destroyed which was upon the face of the ground, both man, and cattle, and the creeping things, and the fowl of the heaven; and they were destroyed from the earth: and Noah only remained alive, and they that were with him in the ark.
Gen 7:24 And the waters prevailed upon the earth an hundred and fifty days.Moses
Heb 11:24 By faith Moses, when he was come to years, refused to be called the son of Pharaoh’s daughter;
Heb 11:25 Choosing rather to suffer affliction with the people of God, than to enjoy the pleasures of sin for a season;
Heb 11:26 Esteeming the reproach of Christ greater riches than the treasures in Egypt: for he had respect unto the recompence of the reward.Num 10:11 And it came to pass on the twentieth day of the second month, in the second year, that the cloud was taken up from off the tabernacle of the testimony.
Num 10:12 And the children of Israel took their journeys out of the wilderness of Sinai; and the cloud rested in the wilderness of Paran.
Num 10:13 And they first took their journey according to the commandment of the LORD by the hand of Moses.
It was v.13 that lead me to offering this message:
Num 10:13 And they first took their journey according to the commandment of the LORD by the hand of Moses.
Here is Moses, it is 2 years into this journey, and here it is said the this is the first tie Israel moves at the command of Moses in the ranks assembled 3 weeks ago on the New Moon, where the first Numbering of the people was revealed.
Num 10:14 In the first place went the standard of the camp of the children of Judah according to their armies: and over his host was Nahshon the son of Ammin-adab.
Num 10:15 And over the host of the tribe of the children of Issachar was Nethaneel the son of Zuar.
Num 10:16 And over the host of the tribe of the children of Zebulun was Eliab the son of Helon.
Num 10:17 And the tabernacle was taken down; and the sons of Gershon and the sons of Merari set forward, bearing the tabernacle.
Num 10:18 And the standard of the camp of Reuben set forward according to their armies: and over his host was Eli-zur the son of She-deur.
Num 10:19 And over the host of the tribe of the children of Simeon was Shelum-iel the son of Zuri-shad-dai.
Num 10:20 And over the host of the tribe of the children of Gad was Eli-asaph the son of Deuel.
Num 10:21 And the Kohathites set forward, bearing the sanctuary: and the other did set up the tabernacle against they came.
Num 10:22 And the standard of the camp of the children of Ephraim set forward according to their armies: and over his host was Elisha-ma the son of Ammi-hud.
Num 10:23 And over the host of the tribe of the children of Manasseh was Gamaliel the son of Pedahzur.
Num 10:24 And over the host of the tribe of the children of Benjamin was Abi-dan the son of Gideon-i.
Num 10:25 And the standard of the camp of the children of Dan set forward, which was the rereward of all the camps throughout their hosts: and over his host was Ahi-ezer the son of Ammi-shaddai.
Num 10:26 And over the host of the tribe of the children of Asher was Pagi-el the son of Ocran.
Num 10:27 And over the host of the tribe of the children of Naphtali was Ahi-ra the son of Enan.Num 10:28 Thus were the journeyings of the children of Israel according to their armies, when they set forward.
Here we see the people of Israel following Moses, and what we also see, is not just a race of people, we do not just see a religious church, no we see an army now a people due to faithfulness on their part in listening to Moses and organizing according to the word of the Lord given to Jethro and enacted by Moses and the Elders in faithfulness, as faithful leaders, we see a religious group of families become an army ready for Christian dominion and Canaan’s reconstruction.
We have 2 things to consider, Israel, Like Noah’s sons are a Common Race, all of the same stock and able to bond in faithfulness and in familial bonds.
But because in this Matter Moses was Faithful and Elders faithful and the princes faithful, and the people faithful , with the women and children faithful… a goal was attainable.
Consider how that Moses is a leader that knows he is in need of other’s help.
I think it is often time that we under value the person of Hobab or Jethro Moses father in law, but when we consider Israel’s wondering and even settlement in the time of Judges it was Moses’ father-in-law that had great influence on Church and State government, and the wonderings now of the people, as well as we see Jael a descendant of this man also helping to subdue Israel’s enemies, all while not having any land inheritance as member of the tribes of Israel.
Num 10:29 And Moses said unto Hobab, the son of Raguel the Midianite, Moses’ father in law, We are journeying unto the place of which the LORD said, I will give it you: come thou with us, and we will do thee good: for the LORD hath spoken good concerning Israel.
Num 10:30 And he said unto him, I will not go; but I will depart to mine own land, and to my kindred.
Num 10:31 And he said, Leave us not, I pray thee; forasmuch as thou knowest how we are to encamp in the wilderness, and thou mayest be to us instead of eyes.
Num 10:32 And it shall be, if thou go with us, yea, it shall be, that what goodness the LORD shall do unto us, the same will we do unto thee.
Num 10:33 And they departed from the mount of the LORD three days’ journey: and the ark of the covenant of the LORD went before them in the three days’ journey, to search out a resting place for them.
He is the Point faithful leadership knows that they have need of outside advise, and that expert opinions, proven opinions are better than their own, and a faithful leader will not guide his people into the unknown when there is some one that can help, he will accept good and quality advise and even look for those who can help.
On the other hand we have Hobab and his willingness, even in the position he is in among Israel as a stranger to the tribes, a Hebrew and a relative but not a son of Isaac and Jacob, in his faith towards YHWH he serves God by serving Moses and caring for the people of Israel as his own and as a father cares for his child.
Num 10:34 And the cloud of the LORD was upon them by day, when they went out of the camp.
Num 10:35 And it came to pass, when the ark set forward, that Moses said, Rise up, LORD, and let thine enemies be scattered; and let them that hate thee flee before thee.
Num 10:36 And when it rested, he said, Return, O LORD, unto the many thousands of Israel.
