We will be considering one of the dearest principles of Christian life and worship, the Regulative Principle, as we consider that the Word of God is our foundation in Christ, and that our blueprint and materials are likewise derived purely from the Word of God.

Pt. 3 To Whom Shall We Go?

Joh_6:67  Then said Jesus unto the twelve, Will ye also go away?

Joh 6:68  Then Simon Peter answered him, Lord, to whom shall we go? thou hast the words of eternal life.

Joh 6:69  And we believe and are sure that thou art that Christ, the Son of the living God.

So, let me lay forth the sentiment of the last 2 messages as this will be the 3rd and the conclusion of the mater.

We began with laying our foundation as the apostle says:
1Co_3:11  For other foundation can no man lay than that is laid, which is Jesus Christ.

and let me continue in Paul’s thought in so saying,
1Co 3:12  Now if any man build upon this foundation gold, silver, precious stones, wood, hay, stubble;

1Co 3:13  Every man’s work shall be made manifest: for the day shall declare it, because it shall be revealed by fire; and the fire shall try every man’s work of what sort it is.

And let me continue in Paul’s thought in ultimately laying for the same sentiments as I laid for the in the second part of this series:

1Co 3:14  If any man’s work abide which he hath built thereupon, he shall receive a reward.

1Co 3:15  If any man’s work shall be burned, he shall suffer loss: but he himself shall be saved; yet so as by fire.

1Co 3:16  Know ye not that ye are the temple of God, and that the Spirit of God dwelleth in you?

And so, here is the point, our foundation in this series was on the doctrine of the origin of faith in Christ, that is that Jesus foremost offensive doctrine and discipline was this statement:

Joh_6:63  It is the spirit that quickeneth; the flesh profiteth nothing: the words that I speak unto you, they are spirit, and they are life.

Joh 6:64  But there are some of you that believe not. For Jesus knew from the beginning who they were that believed not, and who should betray him.

Joh 6:65  And he said, Therefore said I unto you, that no man can come unto me, except it were given unto him of my Father.

and after we have absolutely, positively and undoubtedly affirms Jesus Christ as the foundation of our salvation, the work of the Spirit through the Word of God as the power of our quickening to faith and the Father as the giver of such grace, we can then and only then have level, sound and sold basis to build upon as Paul said

1Co 3:14  ‘men’s work that abide… having been built thereupon Christ, that man shall receive a reward. ‘
But

1Co 3:15  If any man’s work shall be burned, he shall suffer loss: but he himself shall be saved; yet so as by fire.

The point is this We are saved by the Will and Word of God, a spiritual quickening Word, and we build with good works that are taught to us by the Word.

All and all what I am saying is this, it is exactly what King David said in the continuation of David’s Prayer which in some ways the Lord’s Prayer resembles:
1Ch_29:14
…for all things come of thee, and of thine own have we given thee.

1Ch 29:15  For we are strangers before thee, and sojourners, as were all our fathers: our days on the earth are as a shadow, and there is none abiding.

1Ch 29:16  O LORD our God, all this store that we have prepared to build thee an house for thine holy name cometh of thine hand, and is all thine own.

1Ch 29:17  I know also, my God, that thou triest the heart, and hast pleasure in uprightness. As for me, in the uprightness of mine heart I have willingly offered all these things: and now have I seen with joy thy people, which are present here, to offer willingly unto thee.

The Point is this, we only offer to God what He has first given us.
This is true spiritually as well as physically and materially.
God gives his word to save us and we return praise by his word for his word, we add nothing to it willfully.

In sense I am speak of right now, God by His sovereign WORD speaks and Saves sinners.
Simply by the work of the Father a sinner is given faith, by the work of the Holy Spirit a sinner by faith is quickened to have a new life in Christ, to live as a saint, and the Lord Jesus Christ the Son is the object of that faith unto salvation.
Christ the Word or Logos is the Logic of salvation for every one who believes.

This is how the Word God give so salvation by faith is returned to God who gave it.

But likewise building with our works on the foundation God has given us in Jesus Christ requires us to build according to the Word of God, the inspired scriptures spoken by the Spirit breath of YHWH God.

So do not choice our own humanistic works, and we especially do not pick known un godly works to build God’s temple with and his kingdom.
No, we Go to the Word that saved us, to the same source that taught us God’s Word, his logic to save sinners like us and likewise take those lessons in Good Works, fit for building God’s temple and with that which he has given us of His Word, His Logic which is like a building and it’s foundation inseparable, and thus Good Works before ordained of God in His Word, in His Law are the works good enough to rest upon the foundation God has given us in Jesus Christ.

This why Paul continues

1Co_3:16  Know ye not that ye are the temple of God, and that the Spirit of God dwelleth in you?

1Co 3:17  If any man defile the temple of God, him shall God destroy; for the temple of God is holy, which temple ye are.

It is in the tenor of this building all having been provided by God, the foundation and the house it self, that is the salvation and the works.

The motivating or quickening is by God that we have eyes and ears to know of and see and power to build upon, and to have materials and a blue print from the Word provided by God as well that we might serve him acceptably with reverence and Godly fear.

And if you notice, even the very logic of how to build, the Wisdom of how to pattern our life is not according to man’s wisdom but of God’s Wisdom, and thus Wisdom the proceeds from God, wisdom that the world and those who think like the world say is foolish:

1Co_3:18  Let no man deceive himself. If any man among you seemeth to be wise in this world, let him become a fool, that he may be wise.

1Co 3:19  For the wisdom of this world is foolishness with God. For it is written, He taketh the wise in their own craftiness.

1Co 3:20  And again, The Lord knoweth the thoughts of the wise, that they are vain.

It is from this wisdom that James said is to be the practices, lives out word, engrafted into our hearts.

Jas_1:21  Wherefore lay apart all filthiness and superfluity of naughtiness, and receive with meekness the engrafted word, which is able to save your souls.

Jas 1:22  But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves.

Jas 1:23  For if any be a hearer of the word, and not a doer, he is like unto a man beholding his natural face in a glass:

Jas 1:24  For he beholdeth himself, and goeth his way, and straightway forgetteth what manner of man he was.

Jas 1:25  But whoso looketh into the perfect law of liberty, and continueth therein, he being not a forgetful hearer, but a doer of the work, this man shall be blessed in his deed.

And so what I’ve laid forth to you in re-examining the same message, in answering the total question of Christ our Lord in context of His own Doctrine and making Peter’s confession a full doctrine available to us, consistent with the Word of God eternal, is this as the Lord Jesus the Word of God Made flesh speaks to us and asks us…

Will ye also go away?
We respond in every situation of life, in every decision that we make in the personal affirmative

Lord, to whom shall I go? thou hast the words of eternal life.

Joh 6:69  And I believe and am sure that thou art that Christ, the Son of the living God.

We may say so in salvation we presumptuously over set our own role in salvation, by assuming any part of our faith and accredit it to our works and wisdom of our flesh.

We may say so in our works as well when we assume works and a way of life not bound captive to the Word of God, walking in his logic and according to his Law Wisdom.

a 3rd commandment violation on up to the 1st.
For as we are His people who bare his name we likewise must be men of his Word, doers of His work, believing on God.

Jer_7:30  For the children of Judah have done evil in my sight, saith the LORD: they have set their abominations in the house which is called by my name, to pollute it.

 Rom_2:23  Thou that makest thy boast of the law, through breaking the law dishonourest thou God?

Rom 2:24  For the name of God is blasphemed among the Gentiles through you, as it is written. / Isa_52:5

my people know not the judgment of the LORD.

Jer_8:8  How do ye say, We are wise, and the law of the LORD is with us? Lo, certainly in vain made he it; the pen of the scribes is in vain.

Jer 8:9  The wise men are ashamed, they are dismayed and taken: lo, they have rejected the word of the LORD; and what wisdom is in them?

1Ch_29:17  I know also, my God, that thou triest the heart, and hast pleasure in uprightness. As for me, in the uprightness of mine heart I have willingly offered all these things: and now have I seen with joy thy people, which are present here, to offer willingly unto thee.

God tries us as Paul said, in our building to see what our works are made of, are they made and constructed by the Logic of God? By God’s Word?
Will they endure the fire of God’s judgment when he sends a trial of fire to see if our works be made of his Eternal and Abiding word?

Gold, silver, precious stones or…         wood, hay, straw ?

1Co_3:13  each one of our work will become manifest, for the Day will disclose it, because it will be revealed by fire, and the fire will test what sort of work each one of us have done.

1Co 3:14  If the work has built on the foundation survives, we will receive a reward.

1Co 3:15  If anyone’s work is burned up, he will suffer loss, though he himself will be saved, but only as through fire.

1Co 3:16  Do you not know that you are God’s temple and that God’s Spirit dwells in you?

Isa_40:7  The grass withereth, the flower fadeth: because the spirit of the LORD bloweth upon it: surely the people is grass.

Isa 40:8  The grass withereth, the flower fadeth: but the word of our God shall stand for ever.

1Pe_1:24  For all flesh is as grass, and all the glory of man as the flower of grass. The grass withereth, and the flower thereof falleth away:

1Pe 1:25  But the word of the Lord endureth for ever. And this is the word which by the gospel is preached unto you.

Psa_119:89  LAMED. For ever, O LORD, thy word is settled in heaven.

Psa 119:90  Thy faithfulness is unto all generations: thou hast established the earth, and it abideth.

Psa 119:91  They continue this day according to thine ordinances: for all are thy servants.

Psa 119:92  Unless thy law had been my delights, I should then have perished in mine affliction.

Psa 119:93  I will never forget thy precepts: for with them thou hast quickened me.

Psa 119:94  I am thine, save me; for I have sought thy precepts.

Psa 119:95  The wicked have waited for me to destroy me: but I will consider thy testimonies.

Psa 119:96  I have seen an end of all perfection: but thy commandment is exceeding broad.

We have nowhere else to go for a broad foundation, a wide strong and supporting foundation, all other things men call perfect have an end, all other logic is human and futile, all other word’s have an expiration date, but the Word of God can endure all time and all conditions, it is only the word of God that can give us the foundations of grace as well as the foundations for our good works lest we suffer loss.

Our salvation that is unto god’s glory alone is settled, and let our works that rise fro off that exceeding broad and endless base support our works which are likewise comprised of the best efforts we can adduce from the instructions, the Law of the Word of God, his wisdom and his logic.

1Pe_2:1  Wherefore laying aside all malice, and all guile, and hypocrisies, and envies, and all evil speakings,

1Pe 2:2  As newborn babes, desire the sincere milk of the word, that ye may grow thereby:

1Pe 2:3  If so be ye have tasted that the Lord is gracious.

1Pe 2:4  To whom coming, as unto a living stone, disallowed indeed of men, but chosen of God, and precious,

1Pe 2:5  Ye also, as lively stones, are built up a spiritual house, an holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices, acceptable to God by Jesus Christ.

1Pe 2:6  Wherefore also it is contained in the scripture, Behold, I lay in Sion a chief corner stone, elect, precious: and he that believeth on him shall not be confounded.

1Pe 2:7  Unto you therefore which believe he is precious: but unto them which be disobedient, the stone which the builders disallowed, the same is made the head of the corner,

1Pe 2:8  And a stone of stumbling, and a rock of offence, even to them which stumble at the word, being disobedient: whereunto also they were appointed.

1Pe 2:9  But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvellous light:

1Pe 2:10  Which in time past were not a people, but are now the people of God: which had not obtained mercy, but now have obtained mercy.

1Pe 2:11  Dearly beloved, I beseech you as strangers and pilgrims, abstain from fleshly lusts, which war against the soul;

1Pe 2:12  Having your conversation honest among the Gentiles: that, whereas they speak against you as evildoers, they may by your good works, which they shall behold, glorify God in the day of visitation.
