Section II of 1 Timothy

Part 16

(Servants under the Yoke & Masters of Brethren)

1 Timothy

Chapter 6:1-5

A Creed

of

1Timothy 4:9-10

This is a faithful saying and worthy of all acceptation:

For this cause:

We both labour
and
Suffer reproach,

Because we trust in the living God,

Who is the Saviour of all men,
Specially of those that believe.

1Ti_6:1  Let as many servants as are under the yoke count their own masters worthy of all honour, that the name of God and his doctrine be not blasphemed.
1Ti 6:2  And they that have believing masters, let them not despise them, because they are brethren; but rather do them service, because they are faithful and beloved, partakers of the benefit. These things teach and exhort.
1Ti 6:3  If any man teach otherwise, and consent not to wholesome words, even the words of our Lord Jesus Christ, and to the doctrine which is according to godliness;
1Ti 6:4  He is proud, knowing nothing, but doting about questions and strifes of words, whereof cometh envy, strife, railings, evil surmisings,
1Ti 6:5  Perverse disputings of men of corrupt minds, and destitute of the truth, supposing that gain is godliness: from such withdraw thyself.

This portion of 1 Timothy I would suppose is among the least exegeted section of the book in the 21st certury I would think. Because it deals with servants or slaves or bondmen. And while this part of ancient life has become detestable to us in the 21st century and mos of the 20th century, this has not been histories collective oppinion, not is it the natural oppinion, nor is it accordance with the commandments of the Law of God to detest that which God has not desested.
Consider what is here being said in light of the Law of God hich we will read today, as well as in light of the depraved human response to being a servant under a yoke, as well consider that 2nd tear of anology which we should be keeping in mind as well- remember Deacons are servants in a lesser sense they are like, table waiters. Given that the doulos is not a deconos and they are distinct in societal possition, never the less what we see here in the first facet of the oiko-nomion / house hold Law is the patern that then reaches out into the 2nd facet of the church structure, the family or societal or national, Ethnic Oikos is the pattern seen by Moses of the perfection of the heavenly. Is is often times at this point some would play the switch of elevating the churches structur up and above the families structure, in saying the Church leadership is the very image while the Law of Moses is the type or shadow, thus in this age we live in after the revealation and manifestation of Christ we should rather abandon the Mosaic orders and prefer the Christian order.
Paul is teaching from YHWH’s perfect righteousness and from Moses perspective which was taugt to him by Jesus Christ the word made flesh. We can not deny the Law of God mid stream an afirm the Law of God mid stream in the same time, this is like attaching a new cloth to patch an old weak garment, the old will tear our at the stitching and the patch which is new will be left alone wrthless and good for nothing, you can not cover your self with it.
This dispensationalist mindset is like placing new wine into ols wine skins, when the wine which is still fermenting streatches the bottle the onld bottle will burst because it an not contain the unfinished product which will ferment and test the bottles.
The Apostle John says plainly this:
1Jn_2:7  Brethren, I write no new commandment unto you, but an old commandment which ye had from the beginning. The old commandment is the word which ye have heard from the beginning.
And this is how we approach the garment of righteousness that infact it is neither new in fact or old, rather Christ’s coverning garment is an ever lasting righteousness and eternal truth which we desire to wear.
This is how we drink the wine of the communion of the Lord- with a merry heart at the hearing of his forgivness of our sins and transgressions of the Law through the blood of Jesus christ- who promised and shed the blood of the eternal covenant.
This subject of servitude due to our curent socio-political climate is a great subject to test your self on in this area. That is to see if you view the Word of God as eternal or as subject to change whereby creating weakness.
When we arive at the altar of God we do not come justifting our selves, we come with eternal justice, the justice of Jesus and his redemption for sinners, not his redemption of just persons.
And this is so with the accepting of eternality of God’s Word which is upon that altar.
We say Amen to every word of God, and believe it is just and we are unjust, therefore when we read these words of Moses regardless of what are presupositions from this age tell us we as Christians who have God’s word seed in us, say amen dispite the world hatrend and distain for it and us with it.

If we want a strong faith, a logical faith, a faith that can answer consistant objections theie is one rule to commit to and practice: Say amen to every word of God, be confident in

Pro_30:5  Every word of God is pure: he is a shield unto them that put their trust in him.

and knowing

Psa_18:30  As for God, his way is perfect: the word of the LORD is tried: he is a buckler to all those that trust in him.

The Law of God regulated servitude on many different levels in accordance to the same familial principle of brotherhood and neigbor hood we descussed in prior messages. That is that we have laws which command human society govern brotherly servitude, that servitude of family members one with the other:
Hear the Law of God on this mater as spoken to MOses and taught to Our fathers the Sons of Israel:

Exo_21:1  Now these are the judgments which thou shalt set before them.
Exo 21:2  If thou buy an Hebrew servant, six years he shall serve: and in the seventh he shall go out free for nothing.
Exo 21:3  If he came in by himself, he shall go out by himself: if he were married, then his wife shall go out with him.
Exo 21:4  If his master have given him a wife, and she have born him sons or daughters; the wife and her children shall be her master’s, and he shall go out by himself.
Exo 21:5  And if the servant shall plainly say, I love my master, my wife, and my children; I will not go out free:
Exo 21:6  Then his master shall bring him unto the judges; he shall also bring him to the door, or unto the door post; and his master shall bore his ear through with an aul; and he shall serve him for ever.

Exo 21:7  And if a man sell his daughter to be a maidservant, she shall not go out as the menservants do.
Exo 21:8  If she please not her master, who hath betrothed her to himself, then shall he let her be redeemed: to sell her unto a strange nation he shall have no power, seeing he hath dealt deceitfully with her.
Exo 21:9  And if he have betrothed her unto his son, he shall deal with her after the manner of daughters.

Now beyond a man who has waxed or become poor for disparaging reasons, we also have men who are thieves, and are sold into bondage, because they are poor, but specifically because they had been caught stealing and were forced into servitude:

Exo_22:1  If a man shall steal an ox, or a sheep, and kill it, or sell it; he shall restore five oxen for an ox, and four sheep for a sheep.
Exo 22:2  If a thief be found breaking up, and be smitten that he die, there shall no blood be shed for him.
Exo_22:3   If the sun be risen upon him, there shall be blood shed for him; for he should make full restitution; if he have nothing, then he shall be sold for his theft.
Exo 22:4  If the theft be certainly found in his hand alive, whether it be ox, or ass, or sheep; he shall restore double.

Deu_15:1  At the end of every seven years thou shalt make a release.
Deu 15:2  And this is the manner of the release: Every creditor that lendeth ought unto his neighbour shall release it; he shall not exact it of his neighbour, or of his brother; because it is called the LORD’S release.
Deu 15:3  Of a foreigner thou mayest exact it again: but that which is thine with thy brother thine hand shall release;
Deu 15:4  Save when there shall be no poor among you; for the LORD shall greatly bless thee in the land which the LORD thy God giveth thee for an inheritance to possess it:
Deu 15:5  Only if thou carefully hearken unto the voice of the LORD thy God, to observe to do all these commandments which I command thee this day.
Deu 15:6  For the LORD thy God blesseth thee, as he promised thee: and thou shalt lend unto many nations, but thou shalt not borrow; and thou shalt reign over many nations, but they shall not reign over thee.
Deu 15:7  If there be among you a poor man of one of thy brethren within any of thy gates in thy land which the LORD thy God giveth thee, thou shalt not harden thine heart, nor shut thine hand from thy poor brother:
Deu 15:8  But thou shalt open thine hand wide unto him, and shalt surely lend him sufficient for his need, in that which he wanteth.
Deu 15:9  Beware that there be not a thought in thy wicked heart, saying, The seventh year, the year of release, is at hand; and thine eye be evil against thy poor brother, and thou givest him nought; and he cry unto the LORD against thee, and it be sin unto thee.
Deu 15:10  Thou shalt surely give him, and thine heart shall not be grieved when thou givest unto him: because that for this thing the LORD thy God shall bless thee in all thy works, and in all that thou puttest thine hand unto.
Deu 15:11  For the poor shall never cease out of the land: therefore I command thee, saying, Thou shalt open thine hand wide unto thy brother, to thy poor, and to thy needy, in thy land.
Deu 15:12  And if thy brother, an Hebrew man, or an Hebrew woman, be sold unto thee, and serve thee six years; then in the seventh year thou shalt let him go free from thee.
Deu 15:13  And when thou sendest him out free from thee, thou shalt not let him go away empty:
Deu 15:14  Thou shalt furnish him liberally out of thy flock, and out of thy floor, and out of thy winepress: of that wherewith the LORD thy God hath blessed thee thou shalt give unto him.
Deu 15:15  And thou shalt remember that thou wast a bondman in the land of Egypt, and the LORD thy God redeemed thee: therefore I command thee this thing to day.
Deu 15:16  And it shall be, if he say unto thee, I will not go away from thee; because he loveth thee and thine house, because he is well with thee;
Deu 15:17  Then thou shalt take an aul, and thrust it through his ear unto the door, and he shall be thy servant for ever. And also unto thy maidservant thou shalt do likewise.
Deu 15:18  It shall not seem hard unto thee, when thou sendest him away free from thee; for he hath been worth a double hired servant to thee, in serving thee six years: and the LORD thy God shall bless thee in all that thou doest.

And these laws in a Nation wstablished in a country under god’s law have beyond this a furthered understanding that then incorperates the inherited lands of the Ethnic nation in :

Lev_25:24  And in all the land of your possession ye shall grant a redemption for the land.
Lev 25:25  If thy brother be waxen poor, and hath sold away some of his possession, and if any of his kin come to redeem it, then shall he redeem that which his brother sold.
Lev 25:26  And if the man have none to redeem it, and himself be able to redeem it;
Lev 25:27  Then let him count the years of the sale thereof, and restore the overplus unto the man to whom he sold it; that he may return unto his possession.

Now reconsider our verses of focus for todays study of the word of God:
1Ti 6:1  Let as many servants as are under the yoke count their own masters worthy of all honour, that the name of God and his doctrine be not blasphemed.
1Ti 6:2  And they that have believing masters, let them not despise them, because they are brethren; but rather do them service, because they are faithful and beloved, partakers of the benefit. These things teach and exhort.
1Ti 6:3  If any man teach otherwise, and consent not to wholesome words, even the words of our Lord Jesus Christ, and to the doctrine which is according to godliness;
1Ti 6:6  But godliness with contentment is great gain.

I want to make this plain before our ending lesson on 1 Timothy, which I plan on being next Study:
Sonsider in this very immediate context which the epistle provides for it self, concerning lawful regulation of the subject which Paul is dealing with and how Paul starts to tie in the foolish ship wrecked persons of chapter 1 also into this subject concerning “Servants under the Yoke” and “Masters over that yoke”, consider how Paul speaks about those who would rather reject the house-hold law of God as the Law speaks of it, which we read, Paul says:

1Ti_6:3 If any man teach otherwise, and consent not to wholesome words, even the words of our Lord Jesus Christ, and to the doctrine which is according to godliness;
1Ti 6:4  He is proud, knowing nothing, but doting about questions and strifes of words…

This is a direct link back to that chapter 1 statement:

1Ti_1:3… charge some that they teach no other doctrine,
1Ti 1:4  Neither give heed to fables and endless genealogies, which minister questions, rather than godly edifying which is in faith : so do.
1Ti 1:5  Now the end of the commandment is charity out of a pure heart, and of a good conscience, and of faith unfeigned:
1Ti 1:6  From which some having swerved have turned aside unto vain jangling;
1Ti 1:7  Desiring to be teachers of the law; understanding neither what they say, nor whereof they affirm.
1Ti 1:8  But we know that the law is good, if a man use it lawfully;

(I was asked earlier in this study by a friend and brother, “How sure” I was that, “endless genealogies, which minister questions” was not literal genealogies, as in pedigree or family tree?”
And my answer was due to the context of the chapter first, the epistle here in the conclusion, and in the other letters of Paul which utilize similar language and then the proof that God ordained ‘genealogical research’ and well, that no one could have ‘endless’ genealogy, as all must terminate and begin with the creation of God.

And here we can evidently see that this in 1Ti_6:3-4 was and is the same as the

1. other wise teaching of doctrine seen in 1ti_1:3&7

and 2. that the “fables and endless genealogies, which minister questions, rather than godly edifying which is in faith” of 1ti_1:4 is that now mentioned again in 1Ti_6:4 of He (that) is proud, knowing nothing, but doting about questions and strife’s of words, whereof cometh envy, strife, railings, evil surmising’s,   Perverse disputing’s of men of corrupt minds, and destitute of the truth,

as 1Ti 6:5 goes onto say these: “suppose that gain is godliness” and the instruction is ” from such withdraw thyself.”

Paul continues in the context of supporting the exhortation of the family structure, from a summited Godly wife to Her Godly husband, husbands of wives and fathers of children that are Deacons or servant, deacons and servants that are under the headship of Elders who are fathers and like fathers, and elders that Ordain Bishops or overseers by the laying on of their own hands upon him to appoint him to be head in judgment of the maters of the Church, which do not utilize supposed ideas of righteousness which can only work to distort the Gospel of the Faith of Jesus Christ but rather this head judge and leader of the family order of the units with in the churches the justice and righteousness of God Law, his house hold Law that provides for the widow indeed and now as well as servants that are poor and indebted to a master which he owes.

Therefor, even in the case of the “servant under the yoke” and all applicable oiko-nomian from Scripture, Paul says this:

1Ti_6:3  If any man teach otherwise, and consent not to wholesome words, even the words of our Lord Jesus Christ, and to the doctrine which is according to godliness;
1Ti 6:6  But godliness with contentment is great gain.
1Ti 6:7  For we brought nothing into this world, and it is certain we can carry nothing out.
1Ti 6:8  And having food and raiment let us be therewith content.

About JS Lowther

Foremost I know that I am a chief sinner saved by Grace. I am a servant of YHWH Almighty the one true God Who is Father, Son and Spirit. I believe in God's only begotten and perfect Son Jesu(s) Christ whose redemption power of my soul I have Faith in and testify of. Having been redeemed by the blood of Christ, I wish to no longer spend my time in the lusts of the flesh and of this world, but to promote the Gospel of the Kingdom by means of the knowledge of the New Covenant, a reNewal of the Covenant God made with his people Israel in the blood of Christ (Jer 31:31 and Heb 8:8) whereby He writes His Law upon the Heart and Mind beside the forgiveness of sin and transgressions. I believe Christ Jesus is the incarnate Son of God as the WORD made flesh, and the son of man born of the virgin Mary conceived of the Holy Spirit: I believe Christ Jesus Lived a perfect life for us as a living sacrifice as well as a pattern of the Sanctified newness of life a believer has in Him, I believe Christ Jesus died a cursed death on the Cross for His people of Covenant who are sinners, and I believe in Christ Jesus who Resurrected with power from Death from the grave to Justify the offenders. This is the same Jesus who is indeed the Son of David and king of Israel, who is both LORD and Christ over all the kings and dominions of the earth! In the fullness of time YHWH will regather his people under the Head of the Church, Jesu(s) Christ to affect his will according to the Lord's prayer, Psalm 2, 8 and 110 as well as Genesis 1:26. The focus of my administration of the Gospel is like unto my Lord's who said "I have come not but for the lost sheep of the house of Israel.."(Mathew 15:24), and so I have come to my European kinsman according to the flesh. It is my mission to show the Israel of God the Salvation which is taught by Scripture Alone and offered in all ages by Grace Alone through Faith Alone in the work of Christ Alone to the Glory of GOD Alone. As a modern day Puritan separatist it is my goal to purify the church of Christ with Faith heretofore stated. I am studying to show my self approved, if you have any questions just ask!
