Pt.1 A Good Work: Begun & Performed Until the Day of Christ (Php 1:1-18)

“Philippians- An Exposition

This message is the first part after the introduction of an expository study of the Epistle of Philippians written by the apostle Paul under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit.

In this study message we will be looking a Philippians 1:1-18 with specific emphasis on verse 6 with all of the context we can use to expose the text for what it said historically and says to us doctrinally.

We will also devote some time to the phrases from v. 6 & v.10 , “until the day of Jesus Christ”& “till the day of Christ”, as we consider the purpose of the biblical testimony in the life of the ‘first day’ Philippians and how it is further abounded to us by the grace of the Apostles until the Dsy in which God shall judge the world by Jesus Christ.

Philippians

An Exposition

Pt.1 A Good Work: Begun & Performed Until the Day of Christ (Php 1:1-18)

Last week we covered some history of the people and land of Philippi, who the people had descended of, how these people are of a Pelasgian or Dorian origin, a people having been scattered into Greek world and culture from Etruscan lands and Islands such Lemnos and were essentially Etruscan peoples, who had come from the lands in the north of Israel, which was inhabited by the Japhetic people of Tyre, and the Israelite tribes of Dan and Asher, Tyre and her ships formed a back bone of the Phoenician trading people of the world, who had trade posts established throughout the world.

The people of Philippi were of this extraction on both sides of the family (so to speak) both as Macedonians and as Athenians, both descending from the Pelasgian or the Dorian root stock of the Hellenistic or Greek peoples as we call them the Etruscan peoples, prior from Tyre.

After Philip II of Macedon renames the city, the city is called Philippi and identify as a Macedonian city.

Paul in Acts 16:9 received a vision from God in the person of a Macedonian man begging for help.

Paul, arrives in Philippi to get started:

On the Sabbath he goes to worship with other Worshipers of YHWH at a river, he finds only women worshiping, no men at church, and there he preaches the Gospel.

Lydia is converted, she is Baptized and then the Lord blesses her household’s ears with the Hearing of the Gospel as well, and the  faithful people of her house were baptized as well.

Next Paul is arrested, and a Jailer was saved, and then his house hold in like manner…
We discuss here in Acts 16 the
Php_1:5  … fellowship in the gospel
and the “first day” as we read in the epistle just arriving ” until now”.

Remember Verse Php 1:1 came to,
“all the saints in Christ Jesus which are at Philippi, with the bishops and deacons”
And this being but decades after these ‘first days where we find but 2 families 2 households, has already grown to a church with a need for at least 2 Bishops / Over seers meaning they had at least 20 men of warrior age who would likely have their families under them as well.

So let pick up here today at verse 6 after the “fellowship of the Gospel” is established’ and begin to consider the Doctrine of this Epistle:

Php 1:6  Being confident of this very thing, that he which hath begun a good work in you will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ:
Php 1:7  Even as it is meet for me to think this of you all, because I have you in my heart; inasmuch as both in my bonds, and in the defence and confirmation of the gospel, ye all are partakers of my grace.
Php 1:8  For God is my record, how greatly I long after you all in the bowels of Jesus Christ.
Php 1:9  And this I pray, that your love may abound yet more and more in knowledge and in all judgment;
Php 1:10  That ye may approve things that are excellent; that ye may be sincere and without offence till the day of Christ;
Php 1:11  Being filled with the fruits of righteousness, which are by Jesus Christ, unto the glory and praise of God.

This first verse in 6 is not to be overlooked in its principle or in its clear reading in light of this context we carry in from Acts 16.
“He which hath begun a good work in you will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ”

This is a principle available to all who are truly Saints of the Church as those of verse 1, that is, that If God is the one who has ‘done a good work in you‘ God ‘will also perform‘ it until the end, that same work ‘abounding it more and more’ in our lives and other’s lives in specific and predictable ways where we can acknowledge and see the work of God in the life of a saint in ‘ knowledge and all judgment‘.

God is here saying, that when God works with His people and He is the one who has begun a good work.

Lydia, a Woman who goes to the river to Worship alone on the sabbath days, God having the power both converted her, gave her faith and continues to use that initial ‘mustard seed’ Good work of faith for Lydia’s sake, for the progression of sanctification and furtherance of saving of Lydia and her – furthering  her love, that it might abound yet more and her knowledge abound yet more and in all judgment she abound yet more…

Lydia is in the context
Php 1:10  That she may approve things that are excellent; that she may be sincere and without offence till the day of Christ;
Php 1:11  Being filled with the fruits of righteousness, which are by Jesus Christ, unto the glory and praise of God.
and to save her household by her testimony.

God is here saying, that when God works with His people and He is the one who has begun a good work in even suicidal Jailer devoid of any knowledge of the Covenants and promises of God, that when He works he also has the power to continue to use that Good work to perform it further that his love may abound yet more and his knowledge abound yet more and in all judgment he abound yet more…

The Jailer is in the context
Php 1:10  That he may approve things that are excellent; that he may be sincere and without offence till the day of Christ;
Php 1:11  Being filled with the fruits of righteousness, which are by Jesus Christ, unto the glory and praise of God.
and to save his household by her testimony.

The performance mentioned here is huge, it is YHWH sized LORD ship (capitol L O R D ).

The Holy Spirit of YHWH is here saying through Paul, that once one is goodly worked on by God through the hope of the Gospel in the dispensation of Grace into our lives that that Good work of Salvation will continue until the day of Jesus Christ, until judgment day, when the world is judged, and we are adjudicated with it.

v. 6 said, “until the day of Jesus Christ ” & v. 10 said “till the day of Christ”.

What does this mean?

Act_17:30  And the times of this ignorance God winked at; but now commendeth all men every where to repent:
Act 17:31  Because he hath appointed a day, in the which he will judge the world in righteousness by that man whom he hath ordained; whereof he hath given assurance unto all men, in that he hath raised him from the dead.

Here is how far the work of a Saint is to be understood to be performed by God.

Why do you have the book of Philippians in your bible and the 16th chapter of Acts?

Because God is yet using the good work He had done in Lydia’s heart and the Jailer’s heart and their families’ hearts to preach this message today, “from the first day even until now”. Even now to snap you and I out of our ignorance and into his light as we hear the Gospel, and we repent realizing that the Lord will judge us with the world in righteousness by Jesus Christ who he raised from the dead at His day which we will acknowledge and know is His day has come, and none shall miss it.

This will not be a day to bicker and quibble about its timing, this will be a day which we will know before our resurrected eyes will behold as Job said Job_19:25-27

Job_19:25 .. I know that my redeemer liveth, and that he shall stand at the latter day upon the earth:
Job 19:26  And though after my skin worms destroy this body, yet in my flesh shall I see God:
Job 19:27  Whom I shall see for myself, and mine eyes shall behold, and not another; though my reins be consumed within me.

1Th_4:16-18 tell us it will be:
… the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first:
1Th 4:17  Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord.

This is the day in reference,
Lydia and her house, the Jailer and his house died and all fell asleep before this day of Jesus Christ, this day has yet to occurred (the destruction of Jerusalem does not answer to the world judged in Righteousness, not does it answer to a day were all are resurrected from the dead after our bodies have been consumed by worms, nor in a day where we all are caught up to the clouds to meet the Lord in the air.)
Rather, the good work of the Philippians church in this epistle and of those first days… until their now and our now as well, is moving on, being performed by God Almighty in time to all generations.

And yet this is the encouragement of us in our furthered Good works  as relevant in principle to the  Gospel life.

The life of Holy living as Saints in the LORD, as it is a proof that the Philippians’ Good works are being used today via the Holy Spirit of God and His work in the Scriptures which we now read, and this will be used until the day of Jesus Christ at his coming.

And that principle is this
“he which hath begun a good work in you will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ”

As partakers of this Gospel Grace from the YHWH God Eternal through the Law, Prophets and apostles to the Epistles unto us, here is what is to happen in our lives and in time unto all generations:

Php_ 1:9  Our love abounds yet more and more in knowledge and in all judgment. as partakers of their Grace!
that we are growing in our life as individual Christians, as united Christians in churches, and in united churches as tribes and nations.
Php 1:10  That we may approve things that are excellent; that we may be sincere and without offence till the day of Christ;
Php 1:11  that we Be filled with the fruits of righteousness, which are by Jesus Christ, unto the glory and praise of God.

This is the continued work in individuals into the Escalon, the last days. That not only the Philippians would abound yet more and more in love and knowledge and in all judgment, by the Law of God and the Holy Scriptures which is the continuance of Gospel Grace in the Life teaching the Saint how to be holy, to approve things that are excellent and being sincere in those excellent, those things taught by the Holy Spirit of God pertaining to knowledge and judgment, these are definitively the fruits of righteousness, and they come by no other source than by Jesus Christ and always work unto the glory and praise of YHWH God and His alone, this is the work of the Apostles among us.

They who were imprisoned and beaten and stoned, were so to confirm unto us this Gospel and to teach us to confirm it like them; to defend the Gospel and to teach us to defend it as is meet for the partakers of their Grace unto God’s glory.

Continuing to:

Php 1:12  But I would ye should understand, brethren, that the things which happened unto me have fallen out rather unto the furtherance of the gospel;
Php 1:13  So that my bonds in Christ are manifest in all the palace, and in all other places;
Php 1:14  And many of the brethren in the Lord, waxing confident by my bonds, are much more bold to speak the word without fear.

Do you see why this Gospel has been preached by the men God has chosen to be his Apostles?

And yet consider this next Glorification of God as we very much saw in Acts 16:

Php 1:15  Some indeed preach Christ even of envy and strife; and some also of good will:
Php 1:16  The one preach Christ of contention, not sincerely, supposing to add affliction to my bonds:
Php 1:17  But the other of love, knowing that I am set for the defence of the gospel.
Php 1:18  What then? notwithstanding, every way, whether in pretence, or in truth, Christ is preached; and I therein do rejoice, yea, and will rejoice.

Do you remember How God preached in Philippi?

By Lydia, the houses, the soothsaying girl, the girl’s master, the magistrates by beating, the magistrates in having to publicly release them by their citizen rights; the Jailer, his household by his washing of the apostles’ stripes, now by the whole church of Philippi!

“Some indeed did preach Christ even of envy and strife”:

  • the soothsaying girl,
  • the master of her,
  • the magistrates by beating and why they were beaten,
  • the magistrates in having to publicly release them by their citizen rights..

Is this not “of contention”? “not sincerely”? supposing to add affliction to Paul’s bonds?

“Some also of good will”:

the Jailer, by his washing of the apostles’ stripes,

  • His House
  • now by the whole church of Philippi

Is this not “the other of love”?

In both we know that Paul was set for the defense of the gospel.

Php 1:19  For I know that this shall turn to my salvation through your prayer, and the supply of the Spirit of Jesus Christ,
Php 1:20  According to my earnest expectation and my hope, that in nothing I shall be ashamed, but that with all boldness, as always, so now also Christ shall be magnified in my body, whether it be by life, or by death.
Php 1:21  For to me to live is Christ, and to die is gain.
Php 1:22  But if I live in the flesh, this is the fruit of my labour: yet what I shall choose I wot not.

About JS Lowther

Foremost I know that I am a chief sinner saved by Grace. I am a servant of YHWH Almighty the one true God Who is Father, Son and Spirit. I believe in God's only begotten and perfect Son Jesu(s) Christ whose redemption power of my soul I have Faith in and testify of. Having been redeemed by the blood of Christ, I wish to no longer spend my time in the lusts of the flesh and of this world, but to promote the Gospel of the Kingdom by means of the knowledge of the New Covenant, a reNewal of the Covenant God made with his people Israel in the blood of Christ (Jer 31:31 and Heb 8:8) whereby He writes His Law upon the Heart and Mind beside the forgiveness of sin and transgressions. I believe Christ Jesus is the incarnate Son of God as the WORD made flesh, and the son of man born of the virgin Mary conceived of the Holy Spirit: I believe Christ Jesus Lived a perfect life for us as a living sacrifice as well as a pattern of the Sanctified newness of life a believer has in Him, I believe Christ Jesus died a cursed death on the Cross for His people of Covenant who are sinners, and I believe in Christ Jesus who Resurrected with power from Death from the grave to Justify the offenders. This is the same Jesus who is indeed the Son of David and king of Israel, who is both LORD and Christ over all the kings and dominions of the earth! In the fullness of time YHWH will regather his people under the Head of the Church, Jesu(s) Christ to affect his will according to the Lord's prayer, Psalm 2, 8 and 110 as well as Genesis 1:26. The focus of my administration of the Gospel is like unto my Lord's who said "I have come not but for the lost sheep of the house of Israel.."(Mathew 15:24), and so I have come to my European kinsman according to the flesh. It is my mission to show the Israel of God the Salvation which is taught by Scripture Alone and offered in all ages by Grace Alone through Faith Alone in the work of Christ Alone to the Glory of GOD Alone. As a modern day Puritan separatist it is my goal to purify the church of Christ with Faith heretofore stated. I am studying to show my self approved, if you have any questions just ask!
