pt.3 The Eternal Sonship of Christ Affirmed (1 John 2:18-20)

“pt.3 The Eternal Sonship of Christ Affirmed

This message is An Exposition of the Book of 1 John.

In part 3 we will be covering from chapters 2:18-21, and considering the Doctrine of Christ, namely the affirmation of Eternal Sonship and Eternal Word, the One Christ with 2 natures as Son of God Eternally with the Father in fellowship and the nature of the Son of Man who was manifest for our Salvation on earth.

How the Word / title ‘Christ’ is indicative of the anointing or christening as Priest and King. The the prior we must then relate to what was expressed by John in 1 John 1:1-3, and that AntiChrists foremost will oppose the Dominion of Christ our LORD in His Eternal Person and State and that He in fact came in the likeness of sinful flesh to condemn sin in the flesh.

An Exposition of the Book of 1 John

The Eternal Sonship of Christ Affirmed

Delivered on 3-22- 2021 / grego. 7-31-2021

1Jn_2:1  My little children, these things write I unto you, that ye sin not. And if any man sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous:

1Jn 2:2  And he is the propitiation for our sins: and not for ours only, but also for the sins of the whole world.

1Jn 2:3  And hereby we do know that we know him, if we keep his commandments.

1Jn 2:4  He that saith, I know him, and keepeth not his commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him.

1Jn 2:5  But whoso keepeth his word, in him verily is the love of God perfected: hereby know we that we are in him.

1Jn 2:6  He that saith he abideth in him ought himself also so to walk, even as he walked.

1Jn 2:7  Brethren, I write no new commandment unto you, but an old commandment which ye had from the beginning. The old commandment is the word which ye have heard from the beginning.

1Jn 2:8  Again, a new commandment I write unto you, which thing is true in him and in you: because the darkness is past, and the true light now shineth.

1Jn 2:9  He that saith he is in the light, and hateth his brother, is in darkness even until now.

1Jn 2:10  He that loveth his brother abideth in the light, and there is none occasion of stumbling in him.

1Jn 2:11  But he that hateth his brother is in darkness, and walketh in darkness, and knoweth not whither he goeth, because that darkness hath blinded his eyes.

1Jn 2:12  I write unto you, little children, because your sins are forgiven you for his name’s sake.

1Jn 2:13  I write unto you, fathers, because ye have known him that is from the beginning. I write unto you, young men, because ye have overcome the wicked one. I write unto you, little children, because ye have known the Father.

1Jn 2:14  I have written unto you, fathers, because ye have known him that is from the beginning. I have written unto you, young men, because ye are strong, and the word of God abideth in you, and ye have overcome the wicked one.

1Jn 2:15  Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him.

1Jn 2:16  For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world.

1Jn 2:17  And the world passeth away, and the lust thereof: but he that doeth the will of God abideth for ever.

1Jn 2:18  Little children, it is the last time: and as ye have heard that antichrist shall come, even now are there many antichrists; whereby we know that it is the last time.

1Jn 2:19  They went out from us, but they were not of us; for if they had been of us, they would no doubt have continued with us: but they went out, that they might be made manifest that they were not all of us.

1Jn 2:20  But ye have an unction from the Holy One, and ye know all things.

1Jn 2:21  I have not written unto you because ye know not the truth, but because ye know it, and that no lie is of the truth.

1Jn 2:22  Who is a liar but he that denieth that Jesus is the Christ? He is antichrist, that denieth the Father and the Son.

1Jn 2:23  Whosoever denieth the Son, the same hath not the Father: (but) he that acknowledgeth the Son hath the Father also.

1Jn 2:24  Let that therefore abide in you, which ye have heard from the beginning. If that which ye have heard from the beginning shall remain in you, ye also shall continue in the Son, and in the Father.

1Jn 2:25  And this is the promise that he hath promised us, even eternal life.

1Jn 2:26  These things have I written unto you concerning them that seduce you.

1Jn 2:27  But the anointing which ye have received of him abideth in you, and ye need not that any man teach you: but as the same anointing teacheth you of all things, and is truth, and is no lie, and even as it hath taught you, ye shall abide in him.

1Jn 2:28  And now, little children, abide in him; that, when he shall appear, we may have confidence, and not be ashamed before him at his coming.

1Jn 2:29  If ye know that he is righteous, ye know that every one that doeth righteousness is born of him.

A little recap of ch.2

A.

We discussed hw the Eternality of God, why his name is YHWH, is the absolute foundation of 1 John and of all doctrine in John, especially how the Word of Life, was from the beginning but that this word of life was personified as Jesus Christ, that which John heard, saw and handled. And that this cleat as the Word of life was that life and that life was that eternal life that was with the Father, and this was the Son. This asserts with near clarity the doctrine of the Eternal Sonship of Christ as it is called.

So that is established by now I hope.

B.

The fellowship between the Father and Son / the Father who speaks a Word.

The Father has a Word a Logos, a reasonable logical expression, and he is author of the Word going forth which carries such. The Word is the mediation from father to hearer, the Word caries the message by force of the Spirit breath to the ears that can hear.

And so to understand the fellowship of the Father with the Son we have a gimps of this eternal understanding and state, by expressions taught in the Law of God of how a Father has in him his son with a heritage and inheritance even before his birth into the world. Christ also as a Son is a heir and has a heritage this is both of his Eternal Sonship before coming into the material world of flesh and in the flesh, both are one eternal inheritance. All applicable Laws of God help us understand the relationship of a Father with a Son as the best example we have to contemplate Eternal Sonship from our human perspective. Yet in giving the word of God preeminence over its own self we are told that “The Son does nothing but what he hears of the father”, and can do nothing but what is the will of the Father. These are not light statements.

Christ is in an eternal subordination as a Son to the Father, yet this does not establish preeminence in power or glory due to the unity of the Speaker Word relationship it rather creates an equality with the Father touching Godhead, nevertheless there is a sub-ordained status we are to know and believe in. However, this does not carry in to the ordained manifestation of the Heavenly Christ begotten into the world as the Son of Man, the Earthy Christ. So touching Christ’s manhood in his manifestation: when he comes into the world from that prior state where he was personally in communion with the Father he is subordinate indeed, but not in the same way the Man Jesus Christ is Subordinate as a man and son of man.

Christ is in an eternal subordination as a Son to the Father, yet this does not establish preeminence in power or glory, but by the unity of the Speaker Word relationship it rather creates an equality with the Father touching Godhead, , yet this does not do so touching Christ’s manhood in his manifestation: when he comes into the world from that prior state where he was personally in communion with the Father he is subordinate indeed.

In the Eternal state as the Word of God, the Word of Life and Eternal life living Eternally with the Father, the Son, who is the Christ is the literal and mysterious Word of God and has been in every way where YHWH God Speaks, Christ is that word. Even in the objects of creation of heaven and earth, and in the Giving of every commandment or Law of God.

So the second way we are given to contemplate this mystery of the God head, is the fellowship of Father and Son is as a Man or Father Speaking his Word, in this way we are allowed to contemplate the God Head of YHWH, As a man is made known to others by his word, and his word expressed in words of communication. That is an expression of his person and who he is , how he feels and what he wants you to know about him, so is the Father to Christians by use of his Word.

And that Word is in fact the Words of Scripture, the Law, and Prophets, histories and Wisdom of Israel as well as the Gospel of Israel’s salvation in and through Jesus Christ the Son of God, made flesh for us.

C.

The Fellowship we are offered through the Word of Life with the father and the Son.

The fellowship with God we are offered through Jesus Christ, and this is known to us by an enumeration of fellowship I’d like to offer you:

Here are 16 points

  1. we hear, see and handle the word of life. as the apostles have given it to us, that we also may have fellowship with the Apostles
  2. that the Word of Life with the father since the beginning gives us Joy fulfilled. This is the eternal message of Jesus Christ come in the flesh  give us Joy fulfilled. This is joy in the knowledge of Law which is the knowledge of sin, and in Jesus Blood sin is forgiven.
  3. to us we simply learn God is Light and in him is no darkness at all.
  4. we therefore have no desire to walk or fellowship with darkness in ignorance or wickedness
  5. 1:7 all who recieve of these uniting truths have a fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin.
  6. This means we say we have sin and do sin
  7. we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
  8. 8.if any man sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous:
  9. hereby we do know that we know him, if we keep his commandments.
  10. But whoso keepeth his word, in him verily is the love of God perfected: hereby know we that we are in him.
  11. He that saith he abideth in him ought himself also so to walk, even as he walked.
  12. The old commandment is the word which ye have heard from the beginning. Is new as true in him and in you: because the darkness is past, and the true light now shineth.
  13. the hate of brother is a life of darkness.
  14. love of brother is life in the light
  15. the fellowship of God and brethren overcomes a world of wickedness
  16. but he that doeth the will of God abideth for ever.

These are 16 points of fellowship from 1:1 to 2:17 we’ve covered, and yet these are not old commandment or dead letters, but new commandments, a word of life alive in us because of him, these are actually happenings in our life as Christians and desires of our whole heart and mind, the expression of the Joy fulfilled.

The Joy fulfilled of Christians, walking in the light, having the word abide in them hearing, seeing and touching the Word, the Commandments of the Lord Jesus Christ the Word of life for our life and walk are all these, this is life by the Word, in Fellowship with the Father and the Son.

These points 1-14 bring about a certain opposition to the World, the material world.

Now here is where Biblical Christianity as John is expressing it will meet with Heretical thought that had arisen from outside of the Apostolic Torah or Theonomic world view.

Here is where Johns preface of that establishment of particular doctrines needed for all Christians to live in fellowship with YHWH God meet with opposition, it is at this point in the Epistle. While we can undoubtedly see the preface of everything said here to meet this opposition, it is at the statements  of one.

1Jn 2:15-16

A. Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world.
1. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him.

B. For all that is in the world,
1.the lust of the flesh,
2.and the lust of the eyes,
3.and the pride of life,
a. is not of the Father,
b. but is of the world.

And these points are capped of with this ending point:

1Jn_2:17  And the world passeth away, and the lust thereof: but he that doeth the will of God abideth for ever.

Now here is why in Johns time this was relevant to heresies already affecting the Church and the Theonomic thought, because simply said in 1Jn_1:1-3

That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we have looked upon, and our hands have handled, of the Word of life;

1Jn 1:2  (For the life was manifested, and we have seen it, and bear witness, and shew unto you that eternal life, which was with the Father, and was manifested unto us;)

1Jn 1:3  That which we have seen and heard declare we unto you, that ye also may have fellowship with us: and truly our fellowship is with the Father, and with his Son Jesus Christ.

So here is the point made by John then I’ll continue to explain from Johns ancient context and our own:

1Jn_2:18  Little children, it is the last time: and as ye have heard that antichrist shall come, even now are there many antichrists; whereby we know that it is the last time.

So John specifically is dealing with a doctrine a world view a religion that is Anti- Christ.

Now the word Anti- is simple for us it means against or opposed to, and so simply anti-Christ is to be opposed to Christ and what Christ’s work is about.

The word Christ is the Greek of Messiah.

Messiah and Christ areboth are the word for ‘anointed’ , or consecrated.

Christ specificly comes from the root chriō / khree’-o G5548

The idea is of contact; to smear or rub with oil.

And the specific act of anointing to the Hebrew thinking brings with it the thought of the anointing or christening horn of oil.

Often in the Scripture you will hear reference to ‘the horn’ or ‘horn of salvation’ , and this aspect is 2 folk, one of the musical instrument blown at the consecration of a king, priest or what have you, as is the horn an instrument of war and commanding the army or warning the city of attach, the job of a King anointed for sure.

But more so, the horn is a horn or oil for the anointing.

The horn of anointing is where the authority of the name Christ resides.

Yet among our forefathers of Israel, the Messianic consecration or christening, the anointing of oil was personified by the prophets as 1Pe_1:11 says of the Prophets in the Psalms and writings during the history of Israel, these are men who by the Holy Spirit of God were,

“Searching what, or what manner of time the Spirit of Christ which was in them did signify, when it testified beforehand the sufferings of Christ, and the glory that should follow.”

The Prophets spoke the word of God by the Spirit, knew the Christ had to come to earth and suffer to be glorified.

I want to read a statement from Hebrews also that confirms to us the relationship of multiple truths concerning the Son of God the One Christ, and the Son of Man the One Christ of the Father’s anointing:

And I am going to do something to emphasis this, and to save time, lets look at what is said in

Heb_5:5  So also Christ glorified not himself to be made an high priest; but he that said unto him, Thou art my Son, today have I begotten thee.

And

Heb_ 8:4  For if he were on earth, he should not be a priest, seeing that there are priests that offer gifts according to the law:

Christ is the anointed High priest of Heaven which is above the earth which, light gives earth its shadow in the carnal priesthood. and it is God the Father who has made Christ the first born and only begotten Son who is the rightful Christened priest in this capacity over all.

Now listen:

Heb_1:1  God, who at sundry times and in divers manners spake in time past unto the fathers by the prophets,

Heb 1:2  Hath in these last days spoken unto us by his Son, whom he hath appointed heir of all things, by whom also he made the worlds;

Heb 1:3  Who being the brightness of his glory, and the express image of his person, and upholding all things by the word of his power, when he had by himself purged our sins, sat down on the right hand of the Majesty on high;

Heb 1:4  Being made so much better than the angels, as he hath by inheritance obtained a more excellent name than they.

Heb 1:5  For unto which of the angels said he at any time, Thou art my Son, this day have I begotten thee? And again, I will be to him a Father, and he shall be to me a Son?

Heb 1:6  And again, when he bringeth in the firstbegotten into the world, he saith, And let all the angels of God worship him.

Heb 1:7  And of the angels he saith, Who maketh his angels spirits, and his ministers a flame of fire.

Heb_1:8  But unto the Son he saith, Thy throne, O God, is for ever and ever: a sceptre of righteousness is the sceptre of thy kingdom.

Heb 1:9  Thou hast loved righteousness, and hated iniquity; therefore God, even thy God, hath anointed thee with the oil of gladness above thy fellows.

Heb 1:10  And, Thou, Lord, in the beginning hast laid the foundation of the earth; and the heavens are the works of thine hands:

Heb 1:11  They shall perish; but thou remainest; and they all shall wax old as doth a garment;

Heb 1:12  And as a vesture shalt thou fold them up, and they shall be changed: but thou art the same, and thy years shall not fail.

And so this describes Christ right a Priest of Heaven and King on Earth: The Inheritance of Christ

The author of Hebrews just met John on the common ground of the fellowship of our Christian faith, and that is this The one who came into the material world as the Christ of God, the anointed of David’s horn was also the Christ of God in heaven.

And further the author of Hebrews attributes the creation of the world to the Son who he also in verse 8 calls God.

Do not miss the language of pre-existent imbued into this text, that he brings the firstbegotten into the World, the material world. And in 9 he says ‘I have anointed you, I have Christened you with the oil of gladness.’

So it is true there are many christ’s in the bible, kings and priests  but when we speak of this in a personal form we are speaking of The Christ, that is the Christ proclaimed in the Law and the Prophets of the Hebrew Scriptures.

What is said of this Christ?

Joh_1:41 Andrew…   first findeth his own brother Simon, and saith unto him, We have found the Messias, which is, being interpreted, the Christ.

Joh_1:45 Philip findeth Nathanael, and saith unto him, We have found him, of whom Moses in the law, and the prophets, did write, Jesus of Nazareth…

And this is undoubtedly

Deu_18:18  … (and YHWH said, I) will put my words in his mouth; and he shall speak unto them all that I shall command him.

Deu 18:19  And it shall come to pass, that whosoever will not hearken unto my words which he shall speak in my name, I will require it of him.

And so, let me set this out here:

1Jn_2:18  Little children, it is the last time: and as ye have heard that antichrist shall come, even now are there many antichrists; whereby we know that it is the last time.

So to be anti-Christ thus far is to be against this Christ the Apostles spoke of as having found, as well as that the Spirit of Christ spoke to the Prophets of his Suffering and Glory to come prior.

And let’s look at the Christ with God and who was the God of the Prophets

Psalm 2 and then 20 and see how those of the world, the heathen non-saint nations of the world feel about the Eternal LORD and his Christ

Reading from the Brenton LXX to emphasis the Name of Christ the Greek of Messiah or anointed:

Psa_2:1  Wherefore did the heathen rage, and the nations imagine vain things?

Psa 2:2  The kings of the earth stood up, and the rulers gathered themselves together, against the Lord, and against his Christ;

Psa 2:3  saying, Let us break through their bonds, and cast away their yoke from us.

Psa_20:5  We will exult in thy salvation, and in the name of our God shall we be magnified: the Lord fulfil all thy petitions.

Psa 20:6  Now I know that the Lord has saved his Christ: he shall hear him from his holy heaven: the salvation of his right hand is mighty.

Psa 20:7  Some glory in chariots, and some in horses: but we will glory in the name of the Lord our God.

This is war with the world kindred. They hate our Salvation

And what do the other prophets say, like the prophetess Hannah?

1Sa_2:10  The Lord will weaken his adversary; the Lord is holy. Let not the wise man boast in his wisdom, nor let the mighty man boast in his strength, and let not the rich man boast in his wealth; but let him that boasts boast in this, to understand and know the Lord, and to execute judgment and justice in the midst of the earth. The Lord has gone up to the heavens, and has thundered: he will judge the extremities of the earth, and he gives strength to our kings, and will exalt the horn of his Christ….

In foresight Jeremiah he says

Lam_4:20  (Latin trans.) The breath of our nostrils (mouth), Christ our YHWH, was taken in their destructive snares, of whom we said, In his shadow we shall live among the Gentiles. (KJV “the anointed of the LORD”; Brenton “our anointed Lord”)

Amo_4:13  For, behold, I am he that strengthens the thunder, and creates the wind, and proclaims to men his Christ, forming the morning and the darkness, and mounting on the high places of the earth, The Lord God Almighty is his name.

Daniel

Daniel calls the Christ the prophesied “Son of man” who sits by the Ancient of Days and yet is then called the Ancient of Days (YHWH) He that is  Him and was with Him.

Dan_9:24  Seventy weeks have been determined upon thy people, and upon the holy city, for sin to be ended, and to seal up transgressions, and to blot out the iniquities, and to make atonement for iniquities, and to bring in everlasting righteousness, and to seal the vision and the prophet, and to anoint the Most Holy.

Dan_9:25  And thou shalt know and understand, that from the going forth of the command for the answer and for the building of Jerusalem until Christ the prince there shall be seven weeks…

Now turn to ch.7 as it was the precursor to 9’s context:

Dan_7:13  I saw in the night visions, and, behold, one like the Son of man came with the clouds of heaven, and came to the Ancient of days, and they brought him near before him.

Dan 7:14  And there was given him dominion, and glory, and a kingdom, that all people, nations, and languages, should serve him: his dominion is an everlasting dominion, which shall not pass away, and his kingdom that which shall not be destroyed.

Dan_7:21  I beheld, and that horn made war with the saints, and prevailed against them;

Dan 7:22  until the Ancient of days came, and he gave judgment to the saints of the Most High; and the time came on, and the saints possessed the kingdom.

Daniel is using no different language than Hebrews 1 that also spoke of the son of God, the Son of man as the Christ, the high priest over the heavenly altar of God the Father and King by inheritance.

What more of the Son of man is said?

Read Heb 2 as it speaks of the condescension of Christ as the Son of Man

Heb_2:5  For unto the angels hath he not put in subjection the world to come, whereof we speak.

Heb 2:6  But one in a certain place testified, saying, What is man, that thou art mindful of him? or the son of man, that thou visitest him?

Heb 2:7  Thou madest him a little lower than the angels; thou crownedst him with glory and honour, and didst set him over the works of thy hands:

Heb 2:8  Thou hast put all things in subjection under his feet. For in that he put all in subjection under him, he left nothing that is not put under him. But now we see not yet all things put under him.

Heb 2:9  But we see Jesus, who was made a little lower than the angels for the suffering of death, crowned with glory and honour; that he by the grace of God should taste death for every man.

Psa_8:4  What is man, that thou art mindful of him? and the son of man, that thou visitest him?

Psa 8:5  Thou madest him a little less than angels, thou hast crowned him with glory and honour;

All speak to the Eternal Sonship and Christ to be made the Son of Man to accomplish all things.

So no what does this say of the  general anti-Christ , they do not Just deny Jesus the Son of Man, conceived or not conceived of the virgin Mary, but they deny the prophetic and Lawful affirmation that Christ which came in the flesh was in fact the Word of life, the life, the eternal life with the Father. The Pre-existant Son and Christ before the heavenly state and in the eternally state with God the Father and He who will reign in that state as he once he had since before the world was, after his accomplishment of those things spoken of by the prophets.

Listen to me, I give great latitude of reasoning to the this mystery.  But here is where the line is drawn: those who will go out from among us are those who cannot believe exactly what John just laid forth in 1jn_1:1-3. They will deny the scriptures, the WORD, they will challenge the Word of God’s truth, not that they are ignorant and or confused by these statements of the inspired apostles revealing to us more clearly those things the Prophets have spoken of Christ, they will as the next verse says in 19:

“Go out from us, but they were not of us; for if they had been of us, they would no doubt have continued with us: but they went out, that they might be made manifest that they were not all of us. ”

They say they are Christians yet deny 1 John 1:1-3?

What do they do because of it?

Hate and not love, so consider, those who have the fellowship of simple trust, faith,  in the Word of God, the message declared since the begging and stated here by the apostle clearly for us will walk in the light of loving one another.

And where does this come from?

1Jn_2:20  ye have an unctionG5545 from the Holy One, and ye know all things.

1Jn 2:21  I have not written unto you because ye know not the truth, but because ye know it, and that no lie is of the truth.

unction= Chrisma / khris’-mah this again an anointing or smearing, and this is to say we have a christening as Christians, we are anointed from the Holy One to know all the things we have been taught in the matters of fellowship heretofore described, namely the belief in the Eternal God and his Eternal Word, the fellowship of the Father and the Son and fellowship that proceeds from that anointing together.

About JS Lowther

Foremost I know that I am a chief sinner saved by Grace. I am a servant of YHWH Almighty the one true God Who is Father, Son and Spirit. I believe in God's only begotten and perfect Son Jesu(s) Christ whose redemption power of my soul I have Faith in and testify of. Having been redeemed by the blood of Christ, I wish to no longer spend my time in the lusts of the flesh and of this world, but to promote the Gospel of the Kingdom by means of the knowledge of the New Covenant, a reNewal of the Covenant God made with his people Israel in the blood of Christ (Jer 31:31 and Heb 8:8) whereby He writes His Law upon the Heart and Mind beside the forgiveness of sin and transgressions. I believe Christ Jesus is the incarnate Son of God as the WORD made flesh, and the son of man born of the virgin Mary conceived of the Holy Spirit: I believe Christ Jesus Lived a perfect life for us as a living sacrifice as well as a pattern of the Sanctified newness of life a believer has in Him, I believe Christ Jesus died a cursed death on the Cross for His people of Covenant who are sinners, and I believe in Christ Jesus who Resurrected with power from Death from the grave to Justify the offenders. This is the same Jesus who is indeed the Son of David and king of Israel, who is both LORD and Christ over all the kings and dominions of the earth! In the fullness of time YHWH will regather his people under the Head of the Church, Jesu(s) Christ to affect his will according to the Lord's prayer, Psalm 2, 8 and 110 as well as Genesis 1:26. The focus of my administration of the Gospel is like unto my Lord's who said "I have come not but for the lost sheep of the house of Israel.."(Mathew 15:24), and so I have come to my European kinsman according to the flesh. It is my mission to show the Israel of God the Salvation which is taught by Scripture Alone and offered in all ages by Grace Alone through Faith Alone in the work of Christ Alone to the Glory of GOD Alone. As a modern day Puritan separatist it is my goal to purify the church of Christ with Faith heretofore stated. I am studying to show my self approved, if you have any questions just ask!
