“Origin of Brotherhood & Brotherly Love“
This message is A Subject study of Biblical Social Order
In this message we will consider the Origin of Brotherhood and Brotherly Love as it is reveled to us from scripture.
1. The need for the Holy Spirit with the Word of God to ask the LORD to lead us in His Path on all maters, including this one.
2. The organic residency of the Brotherhood as rooted in family order and kinship.
3. The intrinsic nature of brotherly Love as rooted in Faith unto Salvation.
We will use these concepts to consider the first 3 generations of Adam’s Children as recorded, as well as how the familial and faithful brotherhood was instrumentally used by YHWH in giving Prophets and Elders to His Covenant People Israel as is the example we have today to walk in, in a perfect order for Government.

“Brotherhood & Brotherly Love“
Pro_17:17-18 A friend loveth at all times, and a brother is born for adversity.
A man void of understanding striketh hands, and becometh surety in the presence of his friend.
Brenton LXX Pro 17:17 Have thou a friend for every time, and let brethren be useful in distress; for on this account are they born.
ESV 18One who lacks sense gives a pledge and puts up security in the presence of his neighbor.
Today I want to begin is a series that will ruffle some feathers of those listening abroad, but will be usual knowledge elaborated for us here but bible Law knowledge we need to consider and due to our prior series on the books of John, as so much has been said of brotherly love, loving the brethren.
And that is the biblical doctrine of brotherhood and brotherly love
In this congregation, we do not mean that which can be extracted out of one phrase of scripture and therefore called ‘biblical’, no, we endorse a systematic understanding of all of Scripture starting with the Law of God as the perfect Word of God, as the Law establishing our need for the Grace of God as come through Jesus Christ the only Son of God.
It is in fact the Law of God that gives us the foundation to consider our need for salvation from sin, and the absolute vanity of our own ideals of goodness compared to a holy God, or of keeping the Holiness of God’s perfection in our imperfect and fallen, sinful lives.
Simply with out God’s revelation of Law and Justice thereby, we as sinful man would have no basis wherewith to judge our need for God as a fountain of living water that flows from a pace infinitely higher than our selves in grating us thirst relief and cleansing thereby.
So for us the Law is our basis as God specifically gave it in a progressive revelation in time to Moses, the Law written on the heart in giving Adam of his original likeness and image being lost in the fall and its wage of death has corrupting consequences and part of those consequences are was the loss of morality and the knowledge of sin and righteousness as a standard before God from Adam to Moses.
Therefore we acknowledge God’s Law through Moses as the Perfect Law king David san about in the Psalms, especially
Psa 19:7 The law of the LORD is perfect, converting the soul: the testimony of the LORD is sure, making wise the simple.
You see David understood that to know God’s perfect law was to know of God’s holiness on maters of life, and that perfect law taugh the need for God’s testimonies, that is his promises or covenants needed to obtain any hope of salvation by faith in this life.
Yet, it is the Law that teaches our sin and our need for salvation by God’s Grace through Jesus Christ and his promise of His blood and its fulfilled work alone!
Yet, it is the Law that also we are promised by the grace of this covenant to have given to our heart and mind.
I find great satisfaction in singing on this regard:
Psa_25:4 Shew me thy ways, O LORD; teach me thy paths.
Psa 25:5 Lead me in thy truth, and teach me: for thou art the God of my salvation; on thee do I wait all the day.
Psa 25:6 Remember, O LORD, thy tender mercies and thy lovingkindnesses; for they have been ever of old.
Do you realize that knowing the ways and the paths of the LORD are alone in the God’s truth? and do you realize hat begging God for his Salvation is in fact ‘waiting all the day upon the LORD, waiting for His tender mercy and his loving kindness that are said to be of Old, or everlasting, Eternal.
The ways of YHWH, the Eternal God, the Paths of YHEH the Eternal God, the truth of YHWH the Eternal God are given to the people of God’s salvation right beside the His Eternal Mercy and Eternal Loving Kindness.
Psa 25:7 Remember not the sins of my youth, nor my transgressions: according to thy mercy remember thou me for thy goodness’ sake, O LORD.
Psa 25:8 Good and upright is the LORD: therefore will he teach sinners in the way.
Psa 25:9 The meek will he guide in judgment: and the meek will he teach his way.
Psa 25:10 All the paths of the LORD are mercy and truth unto such as keep his covenant and his testimonies.
Do you realize that YHWH the LORD is Good and Upright THEREFORE will he teach sinners in the way?
If God would not teach Sinners the way, or show them the road to walk on… sinners would not find it.
And yet God has extended to us knowledge of His uprightness, his judgment, his mercy and truth if we have been made meek to receive His ways as higher than our ways, and the question is have we?
By and large in our society even among the Christians we are at a point of being lifted up with pride while being fallen in confusion, we have elevated our lack of humility of humbleness to the ways of God as taught by His law with our own ideals and imaginations, as baseless ate these ideal as the idols of our fathers in pagan times, and more meaningless are our imagination than our forefathers graven images.
Meekness is not simply the humility and mildness of character a man has according to this Psalm, but meekness is the teachability one has
Psa 25:9 The meek will he guide in judgment: and the meek will he teach his way.
After the Grace of God is shed in our heart in the mercy of regeneration given to a sinner among the next things that will happen is a desire to know the ways of God, a meekening.
And the meekening will lead to a desire of the knowledge of the Law of God as lost in fall as a repercussion of sin and death in our members, and we go to Moses the Law giver chosen by the Eternal God to document our most basic foundations of personal and social order.
Adam is the central figure of the book of the generations of Adam, as the book of Genesis contains form Chapter 2 to 5
In this focus the foundation of the family structure is established by Almighty God as ordained intrinsic or organic law. Law so basic spiritually and naturally that is stands as its own witness.
Going through Genesis we would see and understand simply this:
- God counseled with himself to make Adam after his likeness and image, and did so and it was good
- God made Adam male and female, made he him and blessed them with fruitfulness, multiplicity and dominion in the earth.
- When God made Adam he made him flesh, a living creature like all the other forms of life and kinds in he world he made, and yet Adam was spiritually made in God’s Image.
- The Name ADAM is literal Hebrew which means blushing or Rudy, as it is used elsewhere in the Hebrew Bible in speaking of the physiognomy of the Hebrew people.
- Adam was given his woman, his wife as prior he was alone. We see Adam seeking or pursuing after a mate, a match him, one like him and finding none, therefore God says “it is not good Adam men are alone”, and therefore causes a deep sleep to come upon him and takes from his own flesh and bone a woman made in the likeness and image of man, a female to match the male.
- The command to the males and females of Adam’s race is to be fruitful and multiply, make children like you, multiply the seed that is in you and after the kind which you are.
And this was made more sorrowful in the fall, but it was not altered but endorsed as yet the means of dominion and companionship help-meeting of the fallen race.
That even in sorrow the expectation of salvation through a woman’s seed was to come and crush the object of sin as seen in the person of the Serpent.
Q. In fulfillment of this command, what is the result?
Q. and what is family?
A. brothers and sisters
A. Brethren or brotherhood is the natural outcome of God’s created order which he called good, and even in it fallen state is still perfect if it rectified and governed by God’s perfect law… it can still be good, and good for man.
Therefore in the process of time Adam kind produces children, who are brothers:
Cain and Able, brothers whose only thing we know about them is their occupation and their worship together in offering the first fruits to the Lord.
A worship that showed Able as faithful, having witness upon him in righteous and Cain having no witness, but being a sinner, a transgressor of God’s law, being faithless and wicked and therefore he kills his brother because he hated the difference between them.
Cain did not possess the faith of God’s elect and therefore had no love of the brethren, no bond of brotherhood.
Because the bond of brotherhood is only strong and good when governed by the faithful application of brotherly love.
The apostle John told us this principle in our last bible study:
1Jn 2:3 …by this we know that we have come to know him, if we keep his commandments.
1Jn 2:4 Whoever says “I know him” but does not keep his commandments is a liar, and the truth is not in him,
1Jn 2:5 but whoever keeps his word, in him truly the love of God is perfected. By this we may know that we are in him:
1Jn 2:6 whoever says he abides in him ought to walk in the same way in which he walked.
1Jn 2:7 Beloved, I am writing you no new commandment, but an old commandment that you had from the beginning. The old commandment is the word that you have heard.
1Jn 2:8 At the same time, it is a new commandment that I am writing to you, which is true in him and in you, because the darkness is passing away and the true light is already shining.
1Jn 2:9 Whoever says he is in the light and hates his brother is still in darkness.
1Jn 2:10 Whoever loves his brother abides in the light, and in him there is no cause for stumbling.
1Jn 2:11 But whoever hates his brother is in the darkness and walks in the darkness, and does not know where he is going, because the darkness has blinded his eyes.
And so if you recall, I had said that the Word of God is Eternal and the Law is the Word of God, and that Law given to Moses is therefore Eternal.
There is no New Commandments with God, but only eternal Ones new to you when the darkness passes away and the light of God and his Word pervades our emotions, thinking and actions, our heart, mind and strength.
And this Eternal Law is foremost seen in the Love of God which must move forward out side of our own conceits of loving God and into the realm of loving our brother.
And the Law of God as given to Israel through Moses is the perfect law of liberty designed by God for man to teach him the righteousness and justice wherewith he is to love his neighbor.
Don’t fool yourself, you do not know how to love God or how to love your neighbor your brother with out God’s Law.
worship other gods other than YHWH, the LORD
you will bow down to idols and your own imaginations,
you will empty out the Eternal Almighty God YHWH’s name into utter vanity in your life,
you will not remember the Sabbath and worship God in holiness,
you will dishonor your parents,
you will kill,
become a harbinger of falsehood
and covet everything that is not your own.
In short without God’s law you do not know how to love God or your brother, and your natural fallen emotion hates God and his Law and is prone to the ways of Cain, the way of brotherly hatred.
Yet God in his mercy not only gives his holy spirit to awaken and revive you to his Word as the psalm says “Quicken me according to thy word”, but the Holy Spirit of God has given us of his Word to correct us and reprove us and instruct us in righteousness to learn to be the men and women of God thoroughly furnished unto all good works.
When we look at the history and progression of Adam’s sons we read
Adam had Seth as well as other unnamed sons and daughters, and while Cain is banished and builds a city for the people he is among and leaves the company of his father and mother and the brotherhood, he is banished for his crime of murder and fratricide, rather than put him to death, as God was the one only witnessing the murder and no other, yet his fleeing proved his guilt.
God’s judgment on Cain leaving the people of God is proof on its face that he was guilty. Cain is forth with after the book of the generations of Adam never again mentioned in the genealogy of Adam, nor is Able, both are dead to Adam’s family in this world.
The notable Son of Father Adam is Seth, and in the days of Seth’s son Enos we hear a very interesting thing.
Gen 4:26 And to Seth, to him also there was born a son; and he called his name Enos:
then began men to call upon the name of YHWH.
We read of the time of the Church or Ecclesia the called out, and the calling out, as is the meaning of Ek-Klasia ; and here is where the churches official organization after the atrocities of Cain at the last time of Worship takes place, in Gen 4:26.
Perhaps, Adam waited for the fruitfulness of his seed and the multiplicity of it to take affect as the ruling family of his race, now having enough men of 10-1000 for Adam to teach and show the lawful order the LORD taught him in the garden?
Now having these children and grand children a need for setting up a government of the brethren had arisen among men of the brethren. “then began men to call upon the name of the LORD”.
In all civilized and most especially Christian societies, religion always precedes government.
In this country this is so, and it was so when men built the meeting houses of the church which also served as the court house and some times the store house, block house for defense.
The Church, the place where men, brethren came together to call upon the name of the Lord be it a ship, a tent or a structure in among the first things erected by man before society can commence and before civilization can proceed.
Men of a society, of a true brotherhood, that have come together as more than flesh and bone, but being flesh and bone and calling upon the name of the LORD YHWH.
A people desiring the closeness of YHWH to lead them, teach them and show them the way to walk, how to worship Him, as the commonly known text says
For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.
Men after the fall’s first thought in organization was worship, though obstructed by the false brethren in the acts of Cain, it is resurrected by the name of the Ecclasia: the called out who call out on the Name of the LORD YHWH.
It is worth noting that the Greeks used the word Ekklasia, in the same way the LXX Septuagint used the word, to speak of an organization of a brotherhood with in a city state that were seperated unto a specific god in assembly for matters of government. In our Case the only God is YHWH, and the Called Out are those Calling upon HIM.
Salvation, becomes a brotherhood’s first response when they realize they have an enemy in the world, and are hindered by their own fall.
And so why is this form of God centered convocation important and why does it necessarily imply government and not just worship?
Rom 10:14 How then shall they call on him in whom they have not believed? and how shall they believe in him of whom they have not heard? and how shall they hear without a preacher?
Rom 10:15 And how shall they preach, except they be sent? as it is written, How beautiful are the feet of them that preach the gospel of peace, and bring glad tidings of good things!
Because since the beginning, the hearing of the word of God must by necessity establish the Law of God, and law establishes social order and government, and it is the preachers, the teachers and apostles that call out the word of the Lord to the brethren, those called to remind the brethren to Call upon the name of the LORD and be saved. They are the reminders of the Fathers of the brotherhood foremost.
And so from about this point in time we also see God raising up men like in the days of Enos, and Noah- preachers and prophets to answer the called-out who are calling out to him for salvation to teach from his law the way in which we are to Go in a balance, a justice of Law and Gospel.
Rom 10:17 So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.
When Prophets came to Israel to teach the Law, it was as we see hear in Genesis “of thy brethren”
All prophets as well as the Highest Prophet to Come from His brethren, the seed of Israel who was Jesus Christ was according to Philip in Joh_1:45; and peter in Act_3:22-23
Deu_18:15 The LORD thy God will raise up unto thee a Prophet from the midst of thee, of thy brethren, like unto me; unto him ye shall hearken;
When the Elders were appointed from the people of Israel they were obviously brothers of the same family or ethnic structure of the 12 tribes who are the kindred families of 12 sons of Jacob. Every Elder eligible of the position of judge was
Deu 1:13- Exo 18:21-22 a wise men, understanding, and known among his tribe, he was made rulers over his brothers provided out of that tribe.
Exo 18:21 …able men, such as fear God, men of truth, hating covetousness; these are paced by God over them, to be rulers of thousands, and rulers of hundreds, rulers of fifties, and rulers of tens:
Exo 18:22 these are the judges…
So in this case god’s Law not only affirms the Patriarchal order that is by natural father hood and brother hood but God make a qualifier of that wise man known among his tribal brothers that he is a faithful brother able to love his brothers by the enablement of God’s Law.
