Judgment and Reformation
Lev_26:13 I am the LORD your God, which brought you forth out of the land of Egypt, that ye should not be their bondmen; and I have broken the bands of your yoke, and made you go upright.
Lev 26:14 But if ye will not hearken unto me, and will not do all these commandments;
Lev 26:15 And if ye shall despise my statutes, or if your soul abhor my judgments, so that ye will not do all my commandments, but that ye break my covenant:
Lev_26:16 I also will do this unto you…I will even appoint over you terrorLuk 13:24 Strive to enter in at the strait gate: for many, I say unto you, will seek to enter in, and shall not be able.
Luk 13:25 When once the master of the house is risen up, and hath shut to the door, and ye begin to stand without, and to knock at the door, saying, Lord, Lord, open unto us; and he shall answer and say unto you, I know you not whence ye are:
Luk 13:26 Then shall ye begin to say, We have eaten and drunk in thy presence, and thou hast taught in our streets.
Luk 13:27 But he shall say, I tell you, I know you not whence ye are; depart from me, all ye workers of iniquity.Amen
The words which we have read are terrifying words from both Moses and Christ and the Reason is for that because both are the promises of a consistent and entirely just and righteous, a word with no division and a word with no inconsistencies in its focus.
YHWH God in these words lays forth the alternative to liberty and freedom in him and by Him and through Him.
in v. 13 I am the LORD your God, which brought you forth out of the land of Egypt, that ye should not be their bondmen; and I have broken the bands of your yoke, and made you go upright.
Uprightness is akin to righteousness, but it brings with it a particular connotation of standing up straight or being able to stand up and not be bowed down by fetters, or rigorous work loads, and in this case punishment; which as we discuss every Passover season the bitter herbs of the meal represent bondage, bitter bondage that bows you down in oppression, and in the Christian revelation it represents to us the bitterness of sin.
If you would go back one chapter to the last verse you will see that after the statutes of Godly servitude and slavery that was the word of God to Israel all these matters, as to how the Lord expected brotherly love to flourish between toward helping the poor, as well as the native citizen or home born in his treatment of the alien as a servant- being distinct and separate forms of bonds, and yet called by God Righteous and Just and love.
after that we read this :Lev 25:55 For unto me the children of Israel are servants; they are my servants whom I brought forth out of the land of Egypt: I am the LORD your God.
Lev 26:1 Ye shall make you no idols nor graven image, neither rear you up a standing image, neither shall ye set up any image of stone in your land, to bow down unto it: for I am the LORD your God.
Lev 26:2 Ye shall keep my sabbaths, and reverence my sanctuary: I am the LORD.
Lev 26:3 If ye walk in my statutes, and keep my commandments, and do them;
Lev 26:4 Then I will give you rain in due season, and the land shall yield her increase, and the trees of the field shall yield their fruit.
what is important to notice in relationship to the proper treatment of one another and of the proper treatment of the stranger is how Idolatry and particularly the irreverence of YHWH YOUR GOD as well as the irreverence of the LORD’s Sabbath and the irreverence of the bounds or Holy or sacred worship.
as well he ends with the sweeping broad statement
” If ye walk in my statutes, and keep my commandments, and do them”
Here the Lord promises provisions and a supply of blessing upon our land.
Thus the opposite which we have read of today is the direct response of God for Idolatry, sabbath breaking and irreverence of worship.
Why?
Because Idolatry is the replacement of the LORD YHWH God. and with the replacement of YHWH, that is the God “which is”, the God “that is” that God who alone says “I am what I am” is my name.Comes another God entirely. Even when we make an image of what we think God looks like and we venerate it or worship it as if it were God, we by breaking God’s own law change the nature of God to our perception, this by course will give rise to our sabbath rest and our reverence of God’s sacred worship to change. Just look at the RC Church and you will see this is so as the totality of that worship resembles the opposite of this scripture.
But now consider the repercussions of forsaking the LORD Your God who delivered from bondage and sin.
if ye shall despise my statutes, or if your soul abhor my judgments, so that ye will not do all my commandments, but that ye break my covenant:Lev 26:16 I also will do this unto you; I will even appoint over you terror…
17 And I will set my face against youthey that hate you shall reign over you; and ye shall flee when none pursueth you.
19 I will break the pride of your power
21 And if ye walk contrary unto me, and will not hearken unto me; I will bring seven times more plagues upon you according to your sins.
Lev 26:23 And if ye will not be reformed by me by these things, but will walk contrary unto me;
Lev 26:24 Then will I also walk contrary unto you, and will punish you yet seven times for your sins.
According to the Word of the Lord we have a long road of punishment legislated for the Church due to a lack of reform.
Now here is the blessed hope, this is the glad tidings of the Gospel:
Lev 26:40 If they shall confess their iniquity, and the iniquity of their fathers, with their trespass which they trespassed against me, and that also they have walked contrary unto me;
Lev 26:41 And that I also have walked contrary unto them, and have brought them into the land of their enemies; if then their uncircumcised hearts be humbled, and they then accept of the punishment of their iniquity:
Lev 26:42 Then will I remember my covenant with Jacob, and also my covenant with Isaac, and also my covenant with Abraham will I remember; and I will remember the land.
In a very similar group of curses in Deuteronomy 29 the repentance chapter of 30 follows in saying this, which by inspiration the Apostle Paul reveals to us the more perfect understanding in Romans 10:
Deu 30:1 And it shall come to pass, when all these things are come upon thee, the blessing and the curse, which I have set before thee, and thou shalt call them to mind among all the nations, whither the LORD thy God hath driven thee,
Deu 30:2 And shalt return unto the LORD thy God, and shalt obey his voice according to all that I command thee this day, thou and thy children, with all thine heart, and with all thy soul;
Deu 30:3 That then the LORD thy God will turn thy captivity, and have compassion upon thee, and will return and gather thee from all the nations, whither the LORD thy God hath scattered thee.
Deu_30:11 For this commandment which I command thee this day, it is not hidden from thee, neither is it far off.Rom_10:6 But the righteousness which is of faith speaketh on this wise, Say not in thine heart, Who shall ascend into heaven? (that is, to bring Christ down from above:)
Rom 10:1 Brethren, my heart’s desire and prayer to God for Israel is, that they might be saved.
Rom 10:2 For I bear them record that they have a zeal of God, but not according to knowledge.
Rom 10:3 For they being ignorant of God’s righteousness, and going about to establish their own righteousness, have not submitted themselves unto the righteousness of God.
Rom 10:4 For Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to every one that believeth.
Rom 10:5 For Moses describeth the righteousness which is of the law, That the man which doeth those things shall live by them.
Rom 10:6 But the righteousness which is of faith speaketh on this wise, Say not in thine heart, Who shall ascend into heaven? (that is, to bring Christ down from above:)
Rom 10:7 Or, Who shall descend into the deep? (that is, to bring up Christ again from the dead.)
Rom 10:8 But what saith it? The word is nigh thee, even in thy mouth, and in thy heart: that is, the word of faith, which we preach;
Rom 10:9 That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.
Rom 10:10 For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.
Now what we see here is the New Covenant pathway of repentance on an individual and national level as the people of Israel.
And that Pathway is resident in Jesus Christ and faith in Him. He is here very clearly being referenced as the John 1:1 word or logos, the very Word of Creation and Scripture – the logic of God, who is God and with God. And Paul Here makes this the Pathway of repentance.
This is not separate from repentance according to the commandments of God and the Law of God, but rather the only way to begin to accomplish that return and that reform– there is no other savior.
Here is the Truth, there is no liberty outside of Jesus Christ and there is no true liberty out side of the law of God: all and in all there is no liberty without the Word and utilization of the Logic of God in application of the Law and the Gospel.
Christ salvation from the bondage of sin is fore most seen in his liberation from idolatry and the liberation from idolatry is most seen in a peoples retur to keeping His sabbaths, and reverence of His sanctuary: and walking in His statutes, and keeping His commandments, and doing them.
Do you realize that we are born into a covenantal war?
A war that binds by sin and death and passes upon us by God’s promise to our forefathers from the time of the fall until now? a Broken covenant of Work which we fail in us as our fathers?
And a war for Life that is lead by the Law of God through Christ.
The apostle Paul in the tone of the New Covenant’s promise says:
Rom_8:2 For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of Sin and Death.
Rom 8:3 For what the law could not do, in that it was weak through the flesh, God sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, and for sin, condemned sin in the flesh:
Rom 8:4 That the righteousness of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.
Let me give you a crash course on the progression of sin in both the world and in the Nation of Israel specifically:
From the book of Romans that deserves your study and attention, so let’s have a ‘crash course’ .
First, we start with the Power of God as creator and Roman’s 1
suffices to say:
Rom 1:19 … that which may be known of God is manifest in them; for God hath shewed it unto them.
Rom 1:20 For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse:
The power of God as Judge:
Rom_1:32 Who knowing the judgment of God, that they which commit such things are worthy of death, not only do the same, but have pleasure in them that do them.
God’s Law is what the world is judged by:
Rom_3:19 Now we know that what things soever the law saith, it saith to them who are under the law: that every mouth may be stopped, and all the world may become guilty before God.
The apostle puts it succinctly like this:
1Co_15:56 The sting of death is sin; and the strength of sin is the law.
Here is the judgment of God dispensed by His Law confirming death like a limited monarch ‘king Death’:
Rom_5:17 … by one man’s offence death reigned by one;
Rom_5:21 That as sin hath reigned unto death, even so might grace reign through righteousness unto eternal life by Jesus Christ our Lord.
Here the apostle shows the victorious captain and savior the reigning KING Christ has dominion in one’s life:
Rom_6:12 Let not sin therefore reign in your mortal body, that ye should obey it in the lusts thereof.
Rom 6:13 Neither yield ye your members as instruments of unrighteousness unto sin: but yield yourselves unto God, as those that are alive from the dead, and your members as instruments of righteousness unto God.
Rom 6:14 For sin shall not have dominion over you: for ye are not under the law, but under grace.
Rom 6:15 What then? shall we sin, because we are not under the law, but under grace? God forbid.
Rom 6:16 Know ye not, that to whom ye yield yourselves servants to obey, his servants ye are to whom ye obey; whether of sin unto death, or of obedience unto righteousness?
Rom 6:17 But God be thanked, that ye were the servants of sin, but ye have obeyed from the heart that form of doctrine which was delivered you.
Rom 6:18 Being then made free from sin, ye became the servants of righteousness.
so, in fact the judgment by God’s law is acknowledged as:
Rom_7:12 Wherefore the law is holy, and the commandment holy, and just, and good.
But what does this do to one who has no Saviour?
The battle yet ensues but it is never able to enslave us again because we are delivered and delivered because we have a Captain and a Saviour who wins the battle for us.
Rom_7:23 But I see another law in my members, warring against the law of my mind, and bringing me into captivity to the law of sin which is in my members.
Rom 7:24 O wretched man that I am! who shall deliver me from the body of this death?
Rom 7:25 I thank God through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Now let me point this out captivity and bondage go hand in hand, along with dominion and reigning over another, so we are back to it:
Rom_8:2 For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of Sin and Death.
Rom 8:3 For what the law could not do, in that it was weak through the flesh, God sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, and for sin, condemned sin in the flesh:
Rom 8:4 That the righteousness of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.Rom_8:15 For ye have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear; but ye have received the Spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba, Father.
Paul is giving us a conclusive thought here that the captivity is a repercussion of war in 7:23, and that Christ is the victorious Captain who delivers from the captivity the bondage of this war. And then Paul paints the picture aright in showing how we are subject to righteousness or up-rightness in yielding to God.
Let me say more of this Captain of our salvation Jesus Christ, and how His abilities and to succor us are not just as many Christians think today to give us eternal life in the sky unto which we will fly away to, but how the redemption of this life is likewise under the dominion and reign of Christ:
Heb_2:10 For it became him, for whom are all things, and by whom are all things, in bringing many sons unto glory, to make the captain of their salvation perfect through sufferings.
Heb 2:11 For both he that sanctifieth and they who are sanctified are all of one: for which cause he is not ashamed to call them brethren,
Heb 2:12 Saying, I will declare thy name unto my brethren, in the midst of the church will I sing praise unto thee.
Heb 2:13 And again, I will put my trust in him. And again, Behold I and the children which God hath given me.
Heb_2:14 Forasmuch then as the children are partakers of flesh and blood, he also himself likewise took part of the same; that through death he might destroy him that had the power of death, that is, the devil;
Heb 2:15 And deliver them who through fear of death were all their lifetime subject to bondage.
Heb 2:16 For verily he took not on him the nature of angels; but he took on him the seed of Abraham.
Heb 2:17 Wherefore in all things it behoved him to be made like unto his brethren, that he might be a merciful and faithful high priest in things pertaining to God, to make reconciliation for the sins of the people.Eph_4:8 Wherefore he saith, When he ascended up on high, he led captivity captive, and gave gifts unto men.
Now let me show you what the job of the minister or servant is in preaching the Law and Gospel in this way:
2Ti_2:24-26 …the servant of the Lord must not strive; but be gentle unto all men, apt to teach, patient,
2Ti 2:25 In meekness instructing those that oppose themselves; if God peradventure will give them repentance to the acknowledging of the truth;
2Ti 2:26 And that they may recover themselves out of the snare of the devil, who are taken captive by him at his will.
See, we are born into a war due to the fall of that one man Adam, because he succumbed to the temptation of Satan through his beloved wife Eve he was taken captive at his will as he lusted and accepted Death as his ruler and yielded his members his body to sin, thus the Law stung him assuring him and us that we do not have power and authority not judgment nor does the devil who is appointed to tempt us, but rather that maxim is clear:
“The sting of death is sin; and the strength of sin is the law. “
And yet the Elect are called by God to say:
1Co 15:57 But thanks be to God, which giveth us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.
and here we see the victory, not only in this life but also in that which is to come.
As it is written, Death is swallowed up in victory.
1Co 15:55 O death, where is thy sting? O grave, where is thy victory?
This war for the submission and bondage of men is real, and we are born into a covenantal relationship with God and from the moment we begin to think about what liberty and bondage is, if it is not guided by the absolute supremacy of God as Judge and law giver, and sadly even in that thought the strife is present.
Luk 13:24 Strive to enter in at the strait gate: for many, I say unto you, will seek to enter in, and shall not be able.
Luk_13:27 But he shall say, I tell you, I know you not whence ye are; depart from me, all ye workers of iniquity / unrighteousness.Mat 7:21 Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven.
Mat 7:22 Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works?
Mat 7:23 And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity / lawlessness.
Mat 7:24 Therefore whosoever heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them, I will liken him unto a wise man, which built his house upon a rockJoh 6:39 And this is the Father’s will which hath sent me, that of all which he hath given me I should lose nothing, but should raise it up again at the last day.
Joh 6:40 And this is the will of him that sent me, that every one which seeth the Son, and believeth on him, may have everlasting life: and I will raise him up at the last day.
