“Brotherhood & Brotherly Love“
pt.8 Basic & Foundational Applications
Pro_17:17 A friend loveth at all times, and a brother is born for adversity.
1Pe 2:17 Honour all men. Love the brotherhood. Fear God. Honour the king.
The commentary may be found by listening to the audio message provided in the links above. Listed are mostly scriptural references only.
The proverb continues by saying
Pro_17:18 A man void of understanding striketh hands, and becometh surety in the presence of his friend.
Pro_22:7 The rich ruleth over the poor, and the borrower is servant to the lender.
How do we start? We start by first recognizing how important it is to Love your brethren,
1Jn_3:10 In this the children of God are manifest, and the children of the devil: whosoever doeth not righteousness is not of God, neither he that loveth not his brother.
1Jn 3:11 For this is the message that ye heard from the beginning, that we should love one another.
1Jn 3:12 Not as Cain, who was of that wicked one, and slew his brother. And wherefore slew he him? Because his own works were evil, and his brother’s righteous.
1Jn 3:13 Marvel not, my brethren, if the world hate you.
1Jn 3:14 We know that we have passed from death unto life, because we love the brethren. He that loveth not his brother abideth in death.
1Jn_4:20 If a man say, I love God, and hateth his brother, he is a liar: for he that loveth not his brother whom he hath seen, how can he love God whom he hath not seen?
Until men are drawn back to the love of their brethren in prefereecne to other’s, their families, their kin, their nation and race, as well as their mutual covenantal confession, those who worship as they do of the former, there is no starting point.
The stock of the brotherhood must be devoted to each other as brethren.
In marriage
Gen_2:23 And Adam said, This is now bone of my bones, and flesh of my flesh: she shall be called Woman, because she was taken out of Man.In advancement and aid
Gen_29:14 And Laban said to him, Surely thou art my bone and my flesh. And he abode with him the space of a month. In government /leadership
Deu 17:15 Thou shalt in any wise set him king over thee, whom the LORD thy God shall choose: one from among thy brethren shalt thou set king over thee: thou mayest not set a stranger over thee, which is not thy brother.
2Sa_5:1 Then came all the tribes of Israel to David unto Hebron, and spake, saying, Behold, we are thy bone and thy flesh. In redemption
Neh_5:5 our flesh is as the flesh of our brethren, our children as their children: and, lo, we bring into bondage our sons and our daughters to be servants, and some of our daughters are brought unto bondage already: neither is it in our power to redeem them…
Bother’s need to be establishing Covenantal churches like Enos of kindred.
Multiple families, individuals of families coming to gather to establish social order.
Social order that has its first focus on worship, calling out to YHWH and being called out to YHWH.
We need Men willing to offer themselves to their brethren to help in all forms of adversity.
Do you remember how I pointed out that it was Enos whose name indicated mortal dying man, who brought men together?
Gen_4:26 …then began men to call upon the name of the LORD.
And How I pointed out that to call upon the name of the Lord is to be saved as per
Rom_ 10:13 For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.
In order for men to jointly come together to call upon the name of the Lord they need a time to do so.
And the Sabbath the 4th commandment gives us that time:
Exo_20:8 Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy.
Exo 20:11 For in six days the LORD made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day: wherefore the LORD blessed the sabbath day, and hallowed it.
Deu_5:12 Keep the sabbath day to sanctify it, as the LORD thy God hath commanded thee.
Deu 5:15 And remember that thou wast a servant in the land of Egypt, and that the LORD thy God brought thee out thence through a mighty hand and by a stretched out arm: therefore the LORD thy God commanded thee to keep the sabbath day.
Every Sabbath these are the 2 elements that are to be taught and preached and proclaimed and resuscitated in the faith of the faithful and that is the subject matter of these 2 citations of the 4th commandment:
Creation and Salvation
That YHWH god almighty has given us his word that reveals to us his Lordship as creator of all and Saviour of all who he will save.
And this is how we call upon the name of the Lord, this is what the church or ecclesia is all about, the called out calling out to YHWH in convocation.
Lev_23:2 Speak unto the children of Israel, and say unto them, Concerning the feasts of the LORD, which ye shall proclaim to be holy convocations, even these are my feasts.
Lev 23:3 Six days shall work be done: but the seventh day is the sabbath of rest, an holy convocation; ye shall do no work therein: it is the sabbath of the LORD in all your dwellings.
Call upon his name
Psa_105:1 O give thanks unto the LORD; call upon his name: make known his deeds among the people.
Psa 105:2 Sing unto him, sing psalms unto him: talk ye of all his wondrous works.
Psa 105:3 Glory ye in his holy name: let the heart of them rejoice that seek the LORD.
Psa 105:4 Seek the LORD, and his strength: seek his face evermore.
Psa 105:5 Remember his marvellous works that he hath done; his wonders, and the judgments of his mouth;
The Sabbath and times of convocation are holy times, yes because of their intrinsic nature and simply being the commandment of God, but also because the Spirit says:
Rom_10:14 How then shall they call on him in whom they have not believed? and how shall they believe in him of whom they have not heard? and how shall they hear without a preacher?
Rom 10:15 And how shall they preach, except they be sent? as it is written, How beautiful are the feet of them that preach the gospel of peace, and bring glad tidings of good things!
Rom 10:16 But they have not all obeyed the gospel. For Esaias saith, Lord, who hath believed our report?Rom 10:17 So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.
I am even speaking to the shame of families who use the Sabbath every week for ‘rest only’ sabbath, lying in bed doing nothing, playing games, and doing their own pleasure on the sabbath day and setting no time aside but their own self pleasure and leisure to ‘hallow’ or remember the day.
The Lord Jesus Christ says
Mar_2:27 And he said unto them, The sabbath was made for man, and not man for the sabbath:
Mar 2:28 Therefore the Son of man is Lord also of the sabbath.
The Sabbath convocation is given for our good, for the adversity of spiritual and physical life.
And Christ the LORD has given gifts to men to help establish the time of convocation for this calling:
Look at what the Spirit says in:
Eph_4:7 But unto every one of us is given grace according to the measure of the gift of Christ.
Eph 4:8 Wherefore he saith, When he ascended up on high, he led captivity captive, and gave gifts unto men.
Eph 4:9 (Now that he ascended, what is it but that he also descended first into the lower parts of the earth?
Eph 4:10 He that descended is the same also that ascended up far above all heavens, that he might fill all things.)
Eph 4:11 And he gave some, apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, pastors and teachers;
Eph 4:12 For the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ:
Eph 4:13 Till we all come in the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, unto a perfect man, unto the measure of the stature of the fulness of Christ:
Eph 4:14 That we henceforth be no more children, tossed to and fro, and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the sleight of men, and cunning craftiness, whereby they lie in wait to deceive;
Eph 4:15 But speaking the truth in love, may grow up into him in all things, which is the head, even Christ:
Eph 4:16 From whom the whole body fitly joined together and compacted by that which every joint supplieth, according to the effectual working in the measure of every part, maketh increase of the body unto the edifying of itself in love.
If grown men cannot come together to call upon the name of the Lord to be saved, and rather harm each other they are neither friend or brother and if they are the cause of adversity and not a solution to it you can be sure they will not be there as the time darkens.
Listen to how the Spirit commands Timothy by Paul to see the marks of a man who is sent as a gift from the treasuries of Christ:
1Ti_4:10 …we both labour and suffer reproach, because we trust in the living God, who is the Saviour of all men, specially of those that believe.
1Ti 4:11 These things command and teach.
1Ti 4:12 Let no man despise thy youth; but be thou an example of the believers, in word, in conversation, in charity, in spirit, in faith, in purity.
1Ti 4:13 Till I come, give attendance to reading, to exhortation, to doctrine.
1Ti 4:14 Neglect not the gift that is in thee, which was given thee by prophecy, with the laying on of the hands of the presbytery.
1Ti 4:15 Meditate upon these things; give thyself wholly to them; that thy profiting may appear to all.
And listen to this encouragement and warning as well:
2Ti_4:2 Preach the word; be instant in season, out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort with all longsuffering and doctrine.
2Ti 4:3 For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears;
2Ti 4:4 And they shall turn away their ears from the truth, and shall be turned unto fables.
This is the calling in love of a faithful minister to his brethren, this is what Brothers like Enos are made of.
